I am just wondering if this is going to work. We made a reservation at Old Key West for a trip on January 3-9. At the 7 month window I was hoping to switch to Beach Club or Boardwalk. However, the reservation was made using borrowed points so I wasn't sure if switching resorts was treated as cancelling and re-booking. If so our points would be in a holding account, correct? In this case we obviously couldn't book at the 7 month window. Also, we want to switch the trip to January 4-10 so at least one night would be totally cancelled. Do you think I am going to be able to switch the dates and resort with no penalties? Thanks for any help!

When you switch resorts at 7 mos. you are cancelling the old resssie and booking a new ressie. There are no penalties but you may need to borrow additional points if needed (i.e., your ressie at OKW took 70 points but the new ressie at BCV needs 80 points). Switching resorts is all based on availability too.

The holding account only comes in if you were to cancel the whole reservation 30 days out.

Have you read your handbook?

I just thought if you cancelled a reservation that used borrowed points, the points went into a holding account. Maybe I misunderstood, but that is what I got out of reading the handbook which I have read many times.

The only "problem" with the borrowed points is that they could not be put back into the original use year. So, if you had "extra points" after you made the new ressie, and you wanted to bank them, you couldn't bank the already borrowed points.

I'm guessing that you will be able to get either the BCV or BWV for those new dates. I think BWV would be most likely, but of course, I could be wrong.

If the point total for the new reservation is less than the original, make sure you tell MS to use the borrowed points first. You can then bank current years points as long as you're within your banking window.

It may help to explain the DVC point 'status' types:
Regular: Points assigned to you as part of your regular point allocation.
Banked: Points from a previous use year that you banked to a new use year.
Borrowed: Points borrowed from a following use year to use in a current use year. Points are only borrowed when a reservation is actually made.
Holding: Points returned to your account from a DVC-reservation that was cancelled 30 days to 1- day prior to scheduled check in. (If a reservation is cancelled on the date of scheduled check-in, or in case an early check-out, all points are considered used and no points are returned at all)
Reservation: DVC-Points converted to Reservation Points in order to be used for a non-DVC reservation. Once points are converted into reservation points, they cannot be converted back.

Just to clarify, if you cancel a DVC reservation that used borrowed points, and cancel 31 days or more out, then the points are returned to your account with the status of 'borrowed'. This means they cannot be banked and will expire at the end of your use year. Those points can be used immediately to make another DVC reservation, or alternatively a non-DVC reservation.

If you cancel a DVC reservation at 30 days or less using borrowed points, ALL points for that reservation are returned with a status of 'holding' and certain restrictions apply. You might have used banked, regular, or borrowed...makes no difference. All points become 'holding' points.

If you make a non-DVC reservation, any points used be they banked, regular, borrowed, ALL are immediately converted into 'reservation' points. If you later cancel that reservation, the points are returned to your account with the status of 'reservation' points, and specific restrictions apply to their usage. Reservation points cannot be banked or borrowed, cannot be used for a DVC reservation, and will expire at the end of the use year.

Hope that helps explain the differences between the different point 'status' types.

Now you have some good answers, have a great vacation.

Okay, I think I get it, sometimes it all just gets a little confusing. Now hopefully there will be some availability at Beach Club or Boardwalk!
