Reasonable airfare to US

I'm looking at airfares for Sept/Oct next year, Sydney to LA (probably with a one way from LA to Las Vegas but not too worried about that). Trouble is I no longer have a feel for what a reasonable price is for Sydney/LA return.

E.g. I looked at the Qantas website today, leaving 12/9 and returning 11/10. The total price was $2,330 - the Sale price. But to me this sounds a bit high to be a sale. Am I expecting too mcuh to get a better deal than this? I know it's still a while away, but want to understand what's a good price in case better deals come out early next year.

Wait for a deal.

Qantas had a 72 hour sale that started on Tuesday. Flights were available through to end March for this deal.

LA return was running at $1350 or thereabouts. It was about $1580 to the East Coast/Orlando.

And we all know that Qantas is usually pricing at the high end of the market.


Last year, the deals were running sub $1000. I think some of the travellers this year were getting about $1300 - $1400 to the East Coast.

Given the current climate, I'd say that $1100 - 1300'ish would be a good deal to LA.

Wait and see what United offer later in the year. Usually ANZ and VAust would match them.

I just hate waiting!! Even though I want/need a good price on the airfares, I'm very impatient to get it all booked and planned. But for a possible couple of grand's savings, I will make myself wait.

yeah the waiting sucks! Especially when you start to worry that maybe you've missed the best priced flights.

Wait until they're around the $1200 mark. I booked Sept 2010 for March 2011 flights and got Syd to Orlando for just over $1200. It was more expensive to fly just to LA

I just read on the Sydney Morning Herald website that Qantas will be offering lots of discounts to try and win back favour after the grounding debacle - will have to keep an eye on that, and hope V Australia follow suit as I'd rather fly with them.

just saw $1200 deals to LAX for the next few months on qantas...I think delta and V aust are matching........and korean air..

I am keeping my eye out too as we are going in October 2012. I have seen some good deals going around at the moment, but most are for departures only up until March/April.

I will be sure to post if I find a deal too good to miss!

Maybe some of us could end up on the sme flight

Qantas have some cheap ones ATM, around $1100 mark, but only for travel up until the end of March will keep looking.
