Really stupid question about connecting flights.

I can't remember when I last flew on a connecting flight so I don't know how they work. When we land at our connecting airport and get off the plane do we go pickup our luggage? Then what do we do, do we have to go ccheck in at a ticket counter and go through security screening again or do we just go to our new gate? I know this is stupid but I don't know what to do and I hate not knowing what's coming. Any help and /or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your luggage will be transferred to the second plane. This is if you are flying domestic.

As long as you aren't changing airlines, everything should be automatically handled at the connecting airport. When you check in at your first airport, they will tell you if you need to checkin anywhere at your connecting airport.

If you are changing airlines, I would check with both airlines beforehand and find out what their policies are. Long ago, I was forced to collect my luggage and recheck it when I flew TWA and then switched to PanAm for the 2nd leg of my journey.

Wow you guys are on top of things! :worship:
Thanks so much for the info, I was thinking we would have to get our bags and re-check them and then go through security again, thank goodness we don't! We are flying domestic and staying on the same airline and the layovers are about an hour and a have each way so we should have plenty of time to make the connection.
Thanks again.

You will also get boarding passes for both flights when you check-in. Be sure to check the monitors when you land at the connecting airport, sometimes the gate numbers change from what is printed on your boarding pass.

Is this true if you check in online or just at the airport? Thanks!

From the time you get your boarding pass and land at the next airport - even if it was only an hour or so the gate may change. It really happens alot at the larger airports. ALOT

Just check the monitors when you get off the plane, if one of the flight attendants doesn't recite a list of flights and gates for connecting passengers.

TWA to PanAm!?!?!?! I'll bet there are posters on this board that never heard of either of those airlines, except maybe in their history books.
