Really? Ricky Martin is gay? Duh!

On the news today they said he decided to come out when he was writing his memoirs. So, maybe he wanted to get the hullaboo out of the way before his book came out.

Latin popstar Ricky Martin has confirmed the long-rumored speculation that he is gay. Martin made the announcement via his website, which has since crashed and is down for maintenance. But AFP reports that Martin's statement read, in part: "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am."

Martin said that he came to the conclusion that he would reveal his sexuality while working on his memoirs. Martin said that hiding his sexuality was "too heavy for me to keep inside" and that embracing his sexuality now is "something worth celebrating."

"From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time," Martin wrote on his website.

On the advice of managers, Martin said he remained in the closet, for fear of ruining his astronomical rise to fame in the music industry. In 1999 Martin scored big with his "Livin' La Vida Loca" and is a 5-time Grammy winner.

I knew the moment he had a serogate have his children for him. No way anyone that good looking and straight would have a problem finding someone to have his children! :lmao:

That's also when I thought he might be gay. I've heard the rumors for years, but never got a gay vibe from him. When he used the surrogate, at first I thought well maybe he just never found the woman of his dreams, that he was picky, or that he wasn't the marrying type. Clay Aikens is another story...it seemed obvious to me.

I'm glad Ricky "came out", though, so he can get on with his life without the speculation about him. :thumbsup2

He soooooo hot! Now I know I'll never have a chance with him.

Hahahahaha. I know right. I was watching Chelsea Lately last night and heard that he had come out and I turned to my mother and said "didn't he already?"

It's like when Clay Aiken came out. No one was usrprised then either.

WAIT......Clay Aiken is GAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:rotfl:

I dare all of you to make your condescending comments over on the gay and lesbian board. To come out is one of the toughest things to do, even if is apparent. I applaud his courage to come out and admit to the public that he is gay.

I'm sorry if I offended you. I understand how difficult coming out is. It's just...this was pretty much a given. I'm glad he felt comfortable making the public announcement, though.

Glad he finally came out - for those who don't care and thinks no one else does - really? He is asked in every interview - so some must care. It was his choice not to come out until now. Good for him - something that is NOT easy for many folks - for many reasons.

No - I wasn't surprised at all - my gaydar is pretty dam good.

Of course, but I think that's just what most of us are saying - we weren't surprised because our gaydars aren't too bad, either.

If there is anyone on this board that did not know Ricky Martin was gay, please stand up. It's all over the internet that he's 'come out.' ROTFLMAO, he must have a new CD releasing. Do you suppose he just figured it out, I mean WHY does he think he needs to 'come out?' Seems dumb to me.

Well for one thing he's writing his memoirs so it was going to come out, but he also said he wants his sons to know the truth.

Also a few weeks ago some latina superstar came out and announced it was better for a child to starve to death on the street than be adopted by a homosexual couple.

I think that more latino/a celebraties need to speak up. Good for Ricky.

I never really followed him as an adult, but I did listen to Menudo when I was a kid (I had albums back then!!)

Anyway, I really honestly didn't know he was gay. I remember hearing that he had kids. I just wrongly assumed that he had a woman to go along with those kids. It wasn't until today I learned there was a surrogate mother!

For those of you saying that Ryan Seacrest should come out- hasn't he been linked to women? Including the dark brunette on Desperate Housewives?

You know some people on the other forum were calling him a one -hit wonder -but I love him.
My favorite is the Uplugged "Pegate".
I also like "Loaded" and "Maria"

Yeah, and Ricky Martin dated Rebeca de Alba (a Mexican TV host) on and off for over 10 years. :upsidedow

I am waiting for Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Keanu Reeves, Ryan Seacrest to come out!:thumbsup2

Tom Cruise did come out -- when he jumped on Oprah's couch. :Pinkbounc :rolleyes1 ;)

not a chance Clooney is gay.

He better not be. Otherwise, I'll need more therapy than I've already had. (This time for being attracted to a closeted gay guy. It means my gaydar is seriously broken. :headache: )

Of course, if George does come out in 20 years, Brad Pitt can say, "I told all of you on Ellen Degeneres' show. She asked me how can she get George to appear on her show, and I told her to send him a few Chippendale dancers." :rolleyes1

I love Ricky Martin. Good for him. :thumbsup2

(I guess I had never thought about him being gay. It was a surprise to me.)

"...of course! Not that there's anything WRONG with it....!"

I'm sure I'm digging myself a hole with this post, but...

To the person who posted that they were straight, I know you were likely just being lighthearted and funny, but obviously there is a big difference being public with your sexuality when you are the "accepted norm" versus when you are part of the minority.

And I have to think there's a big difference between people guessing/knowing your sexuality and actually coming out and stating your sexuality - owning it publicly - when you are gay. FWIW, I think it is commendable that he did this on so many levels - he is a role model for others, and he is also being honest about who he is to his children. :thumbsup2

Ricky Martin is gay. Okkkk, good for him. Hope he's happy. I really dont understand why in 2010, this is headline news. I'm watching CNN this morning discusing our Troops dying, and on the bottom of the screen there was a ticker that said, "Ricky Martin is gay." Seriously. Wow.:sad2:

ITA! I can't believe that in 2010 this is even news...It's so sad to me that he even feels that he needs to speak about his private life to others besides his own family/friends. I can't imagine the pressure of not only having to lie, but to feel that you have to be accountable to complete strangers.

I don't get what someone's sexual orientation has to do with one's voice...?

Because people in this country iaren't as progressive as they like to claim they are. And no, its not just the media. The media wouldnt report and write stories if they weren't selling and people didn't care.

I agree somewhat, but we also have whole magazines devoted to which singer is dating which starlet, and who is breaking up with who, and which teen idol threw a public tantrum in an argument with their mother, and so on and so on. Lots of people feel the need to involve themselves heavily in the lives of the rich and famous - so when there is anything which might be construed as "news," - BLAM! Access Hollywood, E!, etc are all over it.

Besides, if we are easily distracted by the bright and shiny minutia of other peoples lives, we don't stop, look around, and actually pay attention to what's happening in the rest of the world.

ETA - FWIW, he's gay. So what? I'm not about to change what I have in my playlist because of that.

I agree with you in spirit, EG.

I guess I just never understand why gay folks feel the need to "come out". I don't ever feel the need to announce my preferred gender for intimate relations.

I guess I am of the opinion that if you don't make it a big deal, then it won't be a big deal.
