Really Bad Breath

There's these nasty little things that form in the back of the tonsils called "tonsil" stones. I know in some people, they are aggravated by eating dairy. I get them and they're a real pain! So I check my tonsils every morning and if there's any white little things sticking to my tonsils, I have to remove them. It can be difficult, because they form in the cavity of the tonsil. It's basically, a combination of food and tissue that breaks down with a sulphur compound, giving them a horrible smell! Check his tonsils and see if there's anything there. I read a while back on the web that in some people, if they stopped eating dairy, they went away. For me, this isn't the case but I can keep on top of them so they that they don't cause a problem.

Hmmm..Sounds like a problem I get now and then. I never knew what it was. I have noticed that it's not as bad when I don't eat a lot of dairy.

Check his tonsils for "tonsil stones". I get these occasionally as well and remove them myself with the back end of a tooth brush. They literally smell like poop. Its totally disgusting.
I will check his tonsils when he gets home from school. Thanks.

Ok, I guess it is time for me to ask a question. I dont eat much dairy at all. I get this little white things that do indeed smell like poop. I always heard them referred to as "Stink Pockets". I think I alone keep the Altoids company in business due to this this. Now how exactly do you check your own tonsils, heck I guess I dont even have a clue what to look for?

I had to look it up, so I'll know what I'm looking for. If DS does have tonsil stones he's going to have a hard time getting them out because he gags just brushing his tongue.

I have those too. My tongue will rub up against them making it a little itchy. Everytime I go to the doctor I mention them but they seem like they don't care. At least I know what they are called now. LOL been to scared to look it up.:lmao:

Tell him to stop drinking milk & see how it is. MY DD had the worst breath until we gave up milk.

Oh Gosh. I just opened the link while eating lunch...not a good thing.

I know this probably isn't even close to being the case but thought I'd throw it out there. I know when people do the Atkins or a low carb diet, when they get to the Keytosis stage, their breath stinks.

I hope you find out soon what the cause is!

That sounds exactly like what my daughter had. Hers went away. Now I need to ask her if she cut back on dairy products.

She's a senior in college, so she's probably switched to beer now.

That is difficult. You have to be careful because there are many tiny little capillaries in that part of the mouth and they bleed very easily. This is probably not advised, but I use a toothpick and VERY carefully scrap out one of the crevices. Often they're sitting right in the entrance of the tonsil and so you can even use your finger and carefully scrap it off. But for a child, I'm not sure what the solution is. I've looked for a while for something to take care of the problem that's natural and haven't had much luck.

I also use a toothpick. I would like to find something else though, as well.

I used to be friends with a girl who did.. Never really knew how to tell her, or what to say, so I never said anything. My youngest daughter frequently has bad breath, even after brushing her teeth. We mentioned this to her dentist at her last appointment, and he said it was caused by a very long uvula. Told us to have her gargle with salt water.. It helps!

Why would a very long uvula cause bad breath? DS's is very long too, but I don't understand how that could make you have bad breath. Did the dentist explain why?

Something about more bacteria collecting on it.. apparently the salt water kills the bacteria. My DD (8) asked if she could just use Scope! LOL Doc said the saltwater would work much better at taking care of the problem, and not just masking it.

Did you read the Wikipedia info?

Q-tips just won't work. I've tried.
I don't have a water pik and they're too expensive for me to buy. Plus, it would irritate my gag reflex.

I can't do bobby pins because of the metal. I can only use gold and stainless steel as I'm allergic to almost all other metals.

As stated there, medicine droppers are only good for small stones and I don't have very large holes to get to them.

Wow, I'm glad I found this thread. I have had 'stones' my whole life and never knew what they were/why I get them. I thought I was ust a freak of nature! :rotfl: I get them more when 1) I've been sick or 2) if I'm drinking less water then usual. I honestly haven't noticed if there's anything dietary that triggers it. Unfortunately I have large tonsils with a few crevices (just on one side though:confused3 ) I try to 'clean' them out every few days - I just use a finger to push upward on the bottom of my tonsil.

I thought I read something about a devise you use to extract wax from your ears. Sorry, I can't remember the name. I've seen them before and I'm pretty sure they were plastic and had a tiny round spoon-like thing at the end.

Yes. It's there. But it states for large crevices. For me, while underneath the crevices may be large, the holes to them are small. I'd rather not try to push something too big into them to stretch them. ;)

My fiance and I both get tonsil stones. We both feel that for us they are caused by post nasal drip. We finally figured out what they were when my fiance's got really bad. I had been telling him for months that he had really bad breath but for some reason he didnt believe me:confused3 When he finally did he researched online and figured out the whole tonsil stone thing. Some of the info that he read recommended gargling with a peroxide mouthwash. It kills/neutralizes the stink. I bought him a bottle and after two days of using it in the morning his bad breadth was gone. It works great and now we both use it occasionally. The one we use is made by colgate. It is called Peroxyl and the bottle is packaged in a blue box. It even tastes good. One word of caution though: we both noticed that if we use it too often it makes our gums feel a bit sensitive so we just use it 1-2 times a week when needed.
