Really Annoying Weight Loss Commercial

Actually, that commercial is more tue than you think. I know a lot of people who have lost weight and look GREAT, and what they see in the mirror is their heavier self. It is quite amazing, that your minds eyes sees something totally different than what everyione else sees. I can go as far to say that even PICTURES. I lost a ton of weight years ago. I went from a size 16 to a size 9. I had never been that thin in my life. I look at picture of me, and I ask my family, how they thought I was so thin, I still looked fat. The size 9 jeans told me I was not fat, but all I can see in the pictures is a fat person.

So, a person in a bikini hiding behind an air mattress is believable.

Oh, I agree it's believable - just look at the trend in celebrities and you can tell that. I just don't think it's responsible to put yet another image of "you have to be stick thin to look good in a bikini" out there. Watch a rerun of Love Boat or Bay Watch, etc. and you see women that look great in bikinis without the outline of every bone showing.

According to the commercials, size 9 IS fat - you want to be size 2!

Not to hijack but actually in the last 1-2 years sizes have actually gotten smaller. At the large retailer I work at they have just cut all girls sizes 16s and 18's and have plans to cut 14's. They are now: girls size 14 = womens size 0, girls size 16 = women's 1 and girls size 18 = women's 2 etc. Same thing is happening with boys clothing. In addition women's size 12 and 14 are going to be made into "plus" sizes as they can charge more for them.

Reason womens clothing sells for more money. More companies are doing this and have plans to.

I bolded this part because I'm not sure what you mean by this. With so many stores adding larger sizes in the past 5 years, I doubt they would remove them from their regular stores and open plus sized stores. Do you mean they'd add some extra money to the price tag but they'll be on the shelf with the others? That doesn't seem right, either.

I think this probably depends on the nature of the store. To me, this sounds like you might be referring to juniors sizes. I can understand them cutting larger girls sizes for financial reasons but I don't really like the idea of a larger, curvier middle schooler trying to fit into a women's size 0 as they may have a hard time finding age appropriate attire.

As far as women's 12's and 14's becoming plus sizes, this is far from an exact science. A 14 at Lane Bryant fits me easily, the tops are even too big. A 14 in NY and Co. or J. Jill usually fits well. A 14 at Old Navy won't fit because it is cut too straight- no curves for my hips so it will pull and bunch and their 16's have about three extra inches in the waist if they fit in my hips and thighs. A 14 in Wet Seal or Charlotte Russe or the Juniors sections is hopelessly far from fitting me. I took a "size 15" pair of board shorts from a surf shop and they didn't even look close to fitting me, yet the Lane Bryant size 14 jeans I had on were starting to get baggy. My point is- sizing is so incredibly different from store to store that it is hard to make decisions as to what is plus sized without an even playing field.

I have noticed a movement in stores like NY and Co., Jones NY, Old Navy, Gap, etc. to include larger sizes in theri mainstream stores. The highest used to be a 14, now it's 16 or 18 and even a 20 in some stores. With them adding more sizes to appeal to more people, it wouldn't make sense for them to cut these sizes from their market. That's not going to happen.

Lane Bryant has begun adding 12's in certain items, such as their panties because there was a market for them. Many people loved the fit and wanted a pair in a 12 as they lost weight. Now, these 12's might be the same size as another store's 14's, but people will go to Lane Byant, feel good about being in a size 12, and enjoy clothes that are cut for curvier people specifically, not just a larger cut of a size 2 pattern.

We do not offer junior sizing at all. This a large chain with 3 divisions, which only offers plus sizing at one division and mostly online.

They have already began to stop offering 16, 18 and 20 in the regular womens department (only select styles in store, most other styles are online) but they plan to include 12 and 14 in this online plus store. For example the regular style women's jeans sell for 22.50 and 27.50 and they sell same style jeans in plus size for 32.50 and 37.50. The only difference between the plus size 16 and "regular" 16 is the cost, the company makes an extra 10 dollars on the plus sizes. I wear a size 14 and have tried on the plus size 14, I see no difference, the cut is still very much like a larger version of a size 2.

ETA: I must add I do not agree with their policies regarding this at all. I have been debating leaving for some time over this issue. I used to shop here all the time it was perfect for me to have a job there. A lot of customers have complained about some of the recent changes at this store such unfair return policies, etc.

the one I can't stand is the one for the exercise machine where the Melanie Griffith look-alike says that since she's lost 9 lbs. (not a typo, NINE POUNDS!!!!) "...my fat jeans don't fit anymore."

She needs a kick in the rear.

This definitely sounds like it would bother some customers. I wonder if the company will really make money from this decision. I mean, it seems like it is financially motivated, but I don't think it's going to end up the way they're hoping. I know I would much rather purchase my clothes in J. Jill or NY and Co. because I feel better picking normal clothes off a shelf than having to go on an expedition to the attic of a department store (I remember having to do that my freshman year of high school to find a dress in my size and I was traumatized) If the average woman is a size 14, to make 12's and 14's "plus size" is ridiculous- (a 14 is "average size"! )esp. when I think other companies offering 16's - 20's has proved to be profitable. Maybe it's a marketing strategy? Maybe they think they're appealing to the smaller women and want to concentrate on that? (like 5-7-9 used to do- I don't know if it's still around- I only went in one once, that only sold sizes 5, 7 and 9, and then started adding in the 3's, 1's, etc. )

And Jams, you have me so curious about what company this is- I have to tell you! ;)

I don't want to mention the name, but there are enough hints. The changes started this past spring. There have been several threads on the dis (mainly the budget board) about how horrible this store has become in recent months. I think they are trying to cater to a "younger/junior" crowd. I doesn't make much sense to me. Even the classic styles and work/office clothing department has really been scaled down to make room for more "fashionable items" hmm sorry super short shorts and see through tiny tanks are not "fashionable", more like trashy. I just hope that they wake up and soon.

Haven't you heard? 0 is the new 2, 2 is the new 4 and 6 is the new 14

Well size is in th eye of the beholder and really sizes are LARGER than they used to be. I wear the same size I wore when I was 40lbs lighter (30 yrs ago!). How can that be? How can I still wear the same size...no elastic etc? Because clothes are bigger. These compaines fool you into thinking that you are smaller than you are. Size 0? What the heck is that. I can remember being 108 lbs and wearing a size 9! Now today if I was 108 I would most likely be a size 2 or 4. If people were really that small why would large dept. chains say as was recently on the news, that they are discontinuing PETITs? Yes I know that has to do with height to some extent but it also has to do with body size too!!
I have to laugh, my sons gf wears a size 2!! She weighs 120! She is 5'1' and my build. AS I said when I was smaller than that I wore a 9!!

Well, actually that is what they do. I don't shop at Walmart much for clothes, but they have on all of their clothing signs "Plus sizes $3 more" or whatever. Kohls does the same thing. Sears will have the identical piece in the Women's department as they have in Misses and it will be more expensive. So does Fashion Bug. So, if they move the 12s and 14s into the plus size arena, then they make more money and while they are at it, hey, they can fuel the thriving multimillion dollar diet industry too. :thumbsup2

I can guess, and I find that sad. Two of the stores have the jeans that fit me best, though I already hate going into the one store to buy the jeans because of the other mechandise and exchange policy.... If they raise the price on *my* jeans because they're size 14, I'll have to find a new jean. They're not raising the quality of the jeans, after all.

Wow. I've never seen those where I shop. I'll keep an eye out, now, though.

I work in a wedding gown shop, and women's sizes are anywhere from $50 to $250 more than the miss's sizes. But a 14 miss and a 14 women's are *very* different. At my store an 18 regular is about the same as a 14 women's.

And for the record, I'm 5'1, about 150 lbs, and a size 8 or 10 depending on the brand. My advice is to not get too wrapped up in size. Instead, keep track of your own measurements.

I just hate people in general that can lose 10 pounds and drop 2 sizes! I lost 30 pounds and went down 1 size. The smallest I can fit into is a size 10, period. I can be 125 (hah!), 135, 145, 155, or 165 and be a size 10. I only go up to a 12 once I get over 165. I'm 5'7", by the way.

Now, I'm happy with a 10, when I'm between 145 and 155, I look hot! :) But I have no incentive to be lower than 145, because I won't drop a size. My hips are too broad and my upper arms are "fat" no matter what so nothing bellow a 10 will ever fit. So theres no point, my clothes will just be baggy in some spots and fitted in others.

Tangential Topic: weights vs. sizes

There is a chart at Curves (women's gym) that has sizes and what weights/measurements *generally* fit those sizes. I don't think it is 100% accurate, (as I've said, heights, bone mass, muscle mass, etc. etc. etc. make it different person to person) but I will go to work out either today or tomorrow depending on how my work goes and I'll post it if anyone is interested.

ETA: Here's one from a website. It actually does work for me. Surprising!http://www.lindalundstrom.com/designer/chart.html#
