Reallocation of points discussion

Since the last time they changed the early part of December,this seem likely again.

but I also would think they will change Thankgiving - alot of schools now have the whole week off - so WDW is pretty busy then - not as much as Christmas - but more like summer - I know that Thanksgiving day and the Friday after are in summer I just think that the whole week will be. My opinions only.

Thanksgiving for a holiday period is a real deal point wise at present.

Here's a question from a newbie!! Is it possible for them to lower the weekend useage points, say, if you reserve for the entire week, but raise them some, or keep them the same, if you only reserve the weekend? Would they consider something like that?

Again, I would expect the only way to lower weekends is to raise week days. In that senario I would expect the total number of points required for a week would be the same, just redistributed to different days.

As Rich pointed out, if the weekends are lowered, that would likely increase the weekend useage from owners who live closer to the resorts. If that happened, it might make it difficult to reserve a week or more at a time for those owners living far far away! IMHO, if they make any changes to specific days of the week, they would be very minor. It would be more likely they might make seasonal adjustments if usage paterns have shifted.

I'm sure if you analyzed it fully, you'd probably find that any change would be a positive for exactly half the members, and a negative for the other half

I doubt it would be as equal a split as that. While there would be some members that gained, I think far more would be inconvenienced, particularly those that travel from further and like to book whole weeks or longer. As Rich correctly points out it would massively help Floridians who could go for weekend breaks but IMHO it would make it a potential nightmare for anyone booking less than 6 months ahead when trying to get a full week. If you're a "local" it doesn't really matter if you go the first weekend in October, the second,third or fourth, if it's only a weekend the chances are you won't be using any annual leave, at most one day vacation and would be driving. Whereas if you're travelling from NY,Canada or England you're likely to be tied into school holidays, work commitments and flight availability.

I think the chances of people having to book 2 days in one resort, checkout and use another resort for 4 days then have to pay cash in a 3rd resort for a final night or two would rise dramatically. This would make organising a vacation an absolute nightmare. I hope the weekend/weekday ratio stays similar to it's current one.

I think the most likely reallocation would be if sufficient numbers of schools changed their vacation/term schedules. I know that some schools are moving to a more even term/break schedule and if that became more widespread I think it sensible for DVC to reflect that situation. It would see a levelling of the seasons, to a degree but I don't think it would dramaticaly change the way DVC works. I do think changing the weekend/weekday ratio would have a major effect on the way DVC worked and as Dean says ( I think) "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it"

I don't think this would be workable, with the flexibility of DVC and ability to book on a night by night basis I think the admin work involved to "police" such a difference in point costs depending on whether the user was booked for a whole week, longer or shorter would be too costly and timeconsuming JMHO

Doc - I thought that someone brought up the question of point reallocation at the OKW Members Meeting that we attended this past December. I seem to recall someone on the panel mentioning just how much grief they took for it and this same person implied that it was not likely to happen again any time soon. Not a definitive answer, but at least the DVC management knows that a point reallocation will more than likely upset the majority of members.

As already mentioned in this thread by Dean and others, I don't see any move towards another reallocation at this time. The last one was 1996 and with each new resort opening, DVC has had an opportunity to modify point requirements, at least for that resort, at the time sales began. There is no sign that was done since BWV (Pref), VWL and BCV all have the same point requirements.

As Towncrier states, this question was asked at the OKW Annual Meeting in Dec and there was no indication that a reallocation was even under consideration.

Unless there is some indication that members are experiencing difficulty getting reservations with the current point structure, I don't see any motivation for DVC to change anything. If there is an imbalance in weekend point usage, that will be reflected by the inability of some members to find weekday reservations. ...If it's not broken...

I suspect that, with members using DVC points for non-DVC reservations, most CRO cash reservations made using those points are on weekends - thus using a higher number of points for often discounted rates- which also translates into the perception by some here that point costs for the non-DVC reservations are not a good value. Using that thought, it makes sense that if CRO gets a lower cash rate and has to use more points- the value of DVC points to CRO and DCL is less, thus a higher cost for the reservations by DVC members using points at other WDW resorts and DCL .
