Reallocating Points

I just tried to reallocate points from one reservation to another. In the past, it has not been a problem. They have just done it. This time, they told me that they were going to have to cancel and rebook the reservations.

In my case, I canceled a reservation that was using banked points to book a new reservation at VGF. The reservation for VGF is in January, but I have another reservation using regular use year points in September (booked within the 7 month window). I wanted to use the banked points first, in September. I was told that they had to cancel both reservations and rebook with the correct points.

I was tempted to hang up and call back, but let her cancel and rebook the reservations. In the end, it worked, but I was a little nervous for a few minutes.

I'm not sure what was different about this time. I have done this a few times before and they have never had to cancel the reservations. Is this something new or did I just get a CM that didn't know how to reallocate points?

We lost a AKV CL reservation while MS was working on our points due to a software error. That's when I found out that the regular MS CM's don't have the ability to hold inventory.

I would not have been happy about that. Did they do anything to help you?

I think the reason I let her do it was because I saw that there was availability. And, after reading recent threads about the waitlist process, I thought it would be ok.

They put us on a "special" wait list and a couple of months before our vacation, I was talking to Member Satisfaction about another issue. I mentioned the AKV problem and she somehow found us a DVC CL room. Makes me wonder if they keep a secret inventory of some rooms. :confused3

They can't reallocate points that are still tied up in a reservation. If all the points are tied up, there is no way to switch them around.

If you have a reservation, cancel it and then want to use some of the points from the canceled reservation for one you are holding, this is something they can do.

This is what she told me and it is what happened. All of the points were being used in multiple reservations. But, in the past, I have had the same situation and was never told that they had to cancel the reservation. Maybe that is how they handled it and never told me they were going to cancel and rebook. But, in the past, I don't think the reservation numbers changed. This time, all of the numbers did change.

That's a good point about the reservation numbers.

The last time I did this a few months ago, I was replacing VGC points for the current UY with newly purchased resale VGC points banked from last year.

I had called once I passed ROFR and the CM at MS told me no way could I do that. I posted about that earlier on this thread.

When I got the points, I called again, and as I also posted previously, while I was explaining what I wanted to do, the CM did it before I finished. No problems at all. My points went back into the current year and the banked points took their place.

And I did NOT get a new reservation number, either.

For the OP, all of your points are the same resort so there is no problem switching which ones are used for your reservation. If your points don't need to be banked until September, then wait until then to bank them. If you bank now and decide a trip, you'd have to borrow. If you cancel, those points are then stuck in 2013. That's why I say wait. If you bank in September, you can then have those 2013 points used for your March 2013 reservation.

The problem with switching points is for those with more than one resort points. What you can't do is book more than 7 months out with one resort points, and then switch with another resort points inside the 11 months. That would be using skirting the home resort window. You would only be able to switch the points used IF there was still availability on those room types at the time you wanted to switch the points.
