Reallocate how points are applied to reservations?

We just bought last year so I'm still trying to learn the finer points of banking, booking windows, etc.

I have a reservation at my home resort for December that was made with '07 banked points. At 7 months I'd like to try to switch to another resort and was planning to do so day by day to maximize my chances of getting the whole week. I'd rather not cancel the first reservation until I'm sure I can get the whole week at another resort but to do that I'll have to use '08 points.

If I end up getting the new reservation is it possible to cancel the original one and have them reallocate the banked points to the new reservation? I hope that makes sense and if it's not possible are there any other ways to do this that will work?

I have done what you are asking many times and never had a problem.

I am also in the same situation and am really concerned with making a mistake with the points that will used for the final reservation.

We have a current res. at SSR for Dec. made with 07 banked points. So now that they are tied up with the reservation, they are "out of the bank" and must be used by June 09 (UY June). Which should be fine, as long as they are used for my 08 Dec vacation.

But if I go ahead and book at 7 mos at OKW using with my 08 points and then cancel the original SSR res. can I get MS to "exchange" the 08 points used for the 07 points? I would really like to make sure that my complete vacation is avaliable before cancelling the first one. With all the points I have right now, I should be able to do a "double booking" to make sure everything is a complete deal before cancelling anything.

I really don't want to risk having these 07 points end up back in my account and use the 08 points for Dec08. I am not able to get back to Disney until Sep09 and would end up having 07 points expiring in June that I can't use.

Just be sure that the CM at MS who helps you understands what you want to do. As I said, I have done this multiple times. I will say, however, that recently there seem to be some CMs who do not seem as versed in some of the details of DVC points (I got some bad info on transferring points--should have checked on the DIS). If the CM you get does not know what you are asking or cannot assure you that all will be well, hang up and call back.
Sometimes posters here on the DIS talk about having to cancel and re-book a reservation, but I have been able to reallocate points without canceling and rebooking--and I have done it multiple times. I may have to do it again soon if I have to cancel my Oct. reservation which uses banked points.

Technically you are no longer supposed to be able to do this unless the days are still available otherwise. I know it's done at times but the rule is any change of points is a cancellation and rebooking.
