'REAL' job for an almost 16 yo girl

At 15 I worked weekends and summer at a motel as a maid. It was a good job for me and I saved enough money from the job to buy my first car 6 months before I could drive it so my dad drove it until I got my permit.

We don't have any hotels or motels here in Bel Air. No, I am not lying. :lmao: We are a pretty large town. But I would have to take her to a less desirable (aka seedy) area of the county to find a motel, and not willing to do that if you KWIM? ;)

Most places where i live dont hire under 18 just b/c of the fact that there are so many who are 18 adn older who want jobs also so they go for them first....Most of the places i know of (target, giant, starbucks, retail, etc.)were only hiring college students this summer around here
Also, i think 15 year olds need work permits adn a lot of businesses dont want to deal with those if they dont have to

Im working at a summer camp this yr adn the minimum age for hiring is 16 adn even than , no one under 18 can be left alone with the kids and the pay is not too great

Ive never worked at any other job but with kids....i started babysitting at 11 adn working as an assistant counselor with kids at 12 and i have to say that ive made pretty good money doing both

Good luck with the job search

When I was 15 - 16 yrs old (been awhile) I worked at Marshall's (TJMaxx) and then I also worked at a jewerly store from older 16 through college.

Also, Chik Fil A also provides college scholarships for their high school employees. Dont know all the details, but I had many friend children receive them.

My DD is 15 also, won't be 16 til December. She has applied to our hairdresser's studio. They always have a hard time keeping the reception job filled during the summer.... Plus its a great perk to have her hair done for free. They close by 8 or 9pm and are not open late on Saturday, closed on Sunday. Even try a barbershop for clean-up.

The first job my twin girls had was for our local Parks and Rec. Dept. for the summer camp programs. They loved being counselors and being outside most of the day. They started at 16 and had a job every summer guaranteed. The Dept. actually calls them back every year. They are now 24 and are site directors responsible for a staff, and over 100 kids each session. (they are both school teachers so the summer $$ is great) The experience has also been extremely helpfull in their career.

my sister worked in our insurance agents office when she was 16. She just did filing for them after school. My parents were friends with them, so that's probably why she got hired. If you know any business owners, perhaps you could help your dd get a job. When I was 16 I worked in a retail store. There's always retail..., but I don't know about hiring 15 year olds. Where I grew up, you had to be 16 to work.

My first job (I was 14 or 15) was with the local library. I shelved books, put the plastic covers on books, changed magazines, etc.

My 2 suggestions are..
fast food and grocery stores...
the problem she's going to have is that many companies (espically big ones) shy away from young kids because of child labor laws.

The day I turned 16 I starting working in Food Service at my local hospital. I only lived about 3 miles away so I was able to ride my bike.

What about paper routes? Summer Camps?? I know the grocery stores around here hire at 15.

At 16 I had 2 jobs---
I worked mornings ( school work study) as a Nurses Aide at our local hospital-- and 2 nights a week and Saturdays at Macys .--

When I was a teenager the best job was to work overnight cleanup at the amphitheatre.

We'd get to watch (and I'm seriously dating myself here) Sting, Rod Stewart, Poison, all the big acts of the 80's for free because we could get in for free because we were employees, then we'd work 10 pm to 7 am on cleanup.

I'd come home exhausted and REALLY dirty, but I made 10 bux an hour 20 years ago (I'm sure it's gone up), you found all SORTS of great stuff that you could keep, and I got to go to all the concerts for free. Plus, I worked there with all my friends so we all carpooled together, took breaks at Dunkin' Donuts at 3 am together, it was a great summer job! No other job came close to paying as well for us...

Only downside is I slept all day so I never went to the beach and got tan-went off to college pale as a ghost :D

My DD 15 could not find a job this summer. Everywhere she asked wanted at least 16 yo.

Also take a look at breakfast restaurants. They will often hire 14 and up for bussing table and she can train to waitress in a year or two. I say breakfast because there is no alcohol and they often find it hard to get help at 6 am. My son worked at the Breakfast Room the summer he was 14 for three summers and the money was excellent. He also worked afternoons as a dishwasher at a nursing home. BTW, the gas money to get her back and forth to work will be an investment in her work ethic. There was another thread here last week about what age kids should start working ~~ I'm a big believer that kids should be working at 14 or 15 to start good habits and to earn their own spending money.

I didn't start working until I was 16, but the friends I had that worked when they were under 16 worked at a local ice cream parlor, answering phones for a chinese restaurant, car wash, and grocery stores.
My sister currently works for BJs club & I'm pretty sure they hire under 16 (maybe) and they actually pay pretty well.
That amphitheater clean up job sounds like a dream job to me....even now at 31 years old! :rotfl2: We've got one about 20-30 miles away...hmmm!

Great idea. I know our township hires younger high school kids for this job. The young ones get hired as counselors, and the older adults (summer jobs for teachers) get the supervisor positions. The supervisors get paid $12-15 an hour so the counselors are less.

I know in my area CVS hires 15 yr olds. I would also try the mall if you have one close..

Both my sister went to work at the county. Well ours has a student program. I would check there. Now that they have graduated college they are still working there and of course have great positions making great money.

This may not work the OP daughter as she isnt interested in babysitting, but for others who have a daughter hitting that age next summer: If they start advertising (local paper, church, bulletinboards) to be full time sitter for the summer break they may be able to find a family needing someone to watch their kids that are normally in school, for just the summer. This would be steady work, M-F in most cases, could earn some good money that way. I know for me, Im at that point where I could go back to work, as I have mine in school full time, but what the heck do I do in the summer? I plan on working with my babysitter, to see if I can set her up to be my full time care during the summer next year, when she will be 14. Untill my son is old enough to be in charge, I will need another person keeping them safe and from killing each other. Id start advertising this a month or so before summer ends, or get the word out there to friends. This would give the people interested some time to have the sitter come and interview, do some sitting to see how everyone gets along and make a decision if they mesh. I did this when I was 13 and made way more money then I would have at Mcds!
