Put me in for nixing the tongue depressor.

I tried a pipe cleaner and a wet noodle, and the squash still will not open.

Sorry.

Ah, Bach. Thanks, Lou!

quick fly by to see if anyone had any brilliant tips for my battle with the acorn squash

and so far: no spoons, butter knives, or dull steak knives....
also no tongue depressors, wet noodles.... and what was the other one? oh yeah, pipe cleaners, which kind of surprises me... I really thought that was going to work
uh, thanks guys....

My house does smell wonderful because the butternut squash could not escape me.

Lou-you are right about Utah.... the only person who is possibly more sweet, shy, retiring and downright demure would have to be Sher!

Sher darling- so glad you are back... but when oh when do we get to see some pics of you????????? I keep seeing other Vikings over and over and over. But where is Sher?

Kimmie- Wanna trade laptops? Mine is only cracked a little. Oh wait. That isn't even mine. DH's is only cracked a little.

Utah-Yes the Fall Fling will be fun. It cracks me up to play for my own cookies which will be from a clean kitchen AND are pretty good. Wonderful even. Guarenteed husband bait. However it ticks me off just a little bit to pay admission and buy tickets for the games. I get that it is a fundraiser.... I have donated cookies and I am happy to pay admission or buy tickets for games.... but Both?!?? also I won't even go into what it costs to have twins in preschool......

Welcome Back to the Viking Horde

Here ya go, Twink. Do you have a meat clever? Or one of those Japanese square ones? You can borrow mine if you want.

Better yet, ask B to open it. I hear he's been in a rage. the past 2 days.

TO PREPARE:

Winter squash matures on the vine and develops an inedible, thick, hard rind and tough seeds. Because this rind makes most squash difficult to peel, it's easier to cook the unpeeled squash, and then scoop out the cooked flesh. Wash the exterior of the squash just before using. The seeds are scooped out before or after cooking.

To cut in half, grasp the squash firmly and use a sharp knife to slice through to the center. Then flip and cut the other side until the squash falls open. Remove and discard the seeds.

To bake a whole (1 to 1 1/2 pound) winter squash, pierce the rind with a fork and bake in a 350-degree oven 45 minutes. Test for doneness by piercing with a fork.

Boil or steam quarters or rings 25 minutes or until tender.

To microwave, place halves or quarters, cut side down, in a shallow dish; add 1/4 cup water. Cover tightly and microwave on HIGH 6 minutes per pound.

Thanks Tink! I knew I could count on you.

Don't have a meat cleaver or the Japanese thingy. I do have a really big knife (maybe a little meat cleaver?) that I never use being as I am kind of a klutz. I tried it. The squash won that round but I figure I am okay being as I didn't lose a finger in the process.
I kind of thought B would offer to come over and attack the squash but he choose hitting golf balls :confused3

I think I will cook the whole thing in the oven as you described.

HA!

I will overcome the squash.
