Reading Challenge 2022

#1/50 Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone by Diana Gabaldon
This is number 9 in the Outlander series. Loved it. I did read the first 500 or so pages in 2021 & finished the last 400 just today.

Wow! First book already!!

i started Gentleman of Moscow last week and only 30% through. It’ll be awhile before I complete book #1 for the year!

I'll join this year. My goal is 25.

#1/25 is Just Checking Scores, a biographical novel by a friend of mine. She was an anchor for the local ABC affiliate whos DH was arrested twice. She defended him the first time but the second time she didn't. He's in federal prison until 2025. Very interesting read and heartbreaking because we became friends after her turmoil and I hadn't realized all that he put her and her DDs through.

I'm currently reading Go Tell the Bees... but only at the gym. It keeps me motivated to keep pedaling on the elliptical, and I'm reading Dirt by Motley Crue when I'm home.

Welcome! Added to list.

Last year had lots of pain and suffering to put it mildly for me. Got nowhere near my goal but this year would like to go for 15.

#1 - The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway

I'm not sure what inspired me to pick this one up to re-read on New Year's Day, but it had been a long time and I find I am not as in awe of Hemingway now as I was when I was younger. The slice-of-life storytelling, with its ambiguous, unsettled ending, isn't as satisfying as I remember it being, and the characters are almost too real in their flawed and often unlikeable ways. The style of the writing itself is no less impressive than it was on first reading, maybe moreso now that I have some experience stringing words together for a living myself, but the storytelling just didn't grab me.

#2 - Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

One of my goals for this year is to read through the stacks on my to-read shelf to make some room, but I failed miserably with this one because I loved it so much it just got moved over to the "keepers" shelf. The storytelling is just beautiful, touching on big questions and timeless themes while remaining wonderfully enmeshed in the world of modern technology. It felt like a love letter to books and writers and techies and nerds of all kinds.

Praying for a better 2022 for everyone. 2021 was worse than 2020 for me, so looking forward to better times.

I'm still waiting on my copy of this one. I ordered from her local indie bookstore to get a signed copy, and they've been so overwhelmed with orders that they haven't gotten them all out yet!

Oh boy - I've never done a group thing like this before so I'll give it a go! Starting goal 10.

Are there any specific rules or formats? Just plop the review in one of these messages?

1/35 The Taste of Ginger by Mansi Shah

Preeti emigrated to the U.S. as a child but has never felt truly American. When a tragedy brings her back to India she finds she doesn’t feel like she quite belongs there either. She does a lot of soul searching, makes major changes, and uncovers much about her family as well.

For a free Amazon kindle book this was pretty good. At times it was a little slow but I always enjoy reading about other cultures, in this case India and their caste system and arranged marriages.

Just an FYI, if your local library uses Beanstack for their Summer Reading Software they may also be participating in the Winter Reading Challenge. It's a program they do every Jan/Feb.

My system uses it and we do a book 'Bingo' game with our customers.

There are digital badges and sometimes prizes and drawings so you might want to check out your local branch to see if they are participating.
