Read any good books lately?

How about some of the classics that you've always wanted to read or read long ago? Jane Austen, Dickens, Twain, etc?

Oh, that's a good idea! I'm rereading Little Women that I got free from Amazon on my Kindle for iPhone app. I also have downloaded Swiss Family Robinson and a few others.
Amazon has lots of classics for free for Kindle or iPhone.

I just read Tuesdays With Morrie and it is fantastic! It had been on my mental reading list for years, but I never remembered it when I was actually buying a book to read. I came upon it by chance and was so happy to find it!

I received a couple of gift cards for Christmas that I am planning on using for books. My next selections will be Precious by Sapphire and The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas.

I read this a few years ago...fantastic book!

Has anyone here made it through Julie and Julia? I borrowed it from a friend, but I can't get past the first chapter. My dh and I rented the movie, and I was hoping that seeing the movie would get me more excited about the book, but so far, I just can't do it! I have this thing about starting books and not finishing them...I HAVE to finish it!! If you've read it, does it get better after the first chapter??:confused3

Surprised nobody has mentioned Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I read it over the summer and LOVED it. It's become one of my all-time favorite books.

Currently reading Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah. Already engrossed in it even though I just started it last night. Been reading all morning. What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday. :goodvibes

If you like romantic suspense (think strong manly men like military:love: or CIA with strong women characters) who are fighting the bad guys of the world, I cannot say enough good things about Suzanne Brockman. Her books are each independant though you learn about most of the charcters from other books.
I ADORE Suzanne Brockmann - her female characters are smart, sassy, opinionated and often NOT perfect, which I love! I started with Hot Target and have read every single book of hers I can get my hands on. Her characters say the things I *wish* I could think of...snappy comebacks and such!

I enjoyed the Stephanie Plum novels, although they have gotten a bit stale as time wears on. The earlier ones made me laugh out loud! The Kay Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwell...some were phenomenally interesting, but some of the later ones were just too dark for me, not sure what changed. Micheal Connelly (sp?) - really enjoy those books! Harry Bosch...interesting character. Dan Brown, enjoyable reads IMO, even if somewhat predictable.

Some others that might not have been mentioned - Sidney Sheldon. Yeah, they're old, but they are definitely entertaining! Leon Uris - super dark in some cases, but very interesting in the way they sometimes merge fictional characters with real events. JMHO, of course...

Thank you for sharing your recommendations - I am going to make a list and hit the library website later!!!

Pillars of the Earth
is my least favourite Follett novel. I did enjoy the sequel, World Without End, though.

I just came back from the mall and I was able to purchase the two books I mentioned earlier. I debated about The Lovely Bones (I didn't know that the movie was based on a book!) but I will probably get that next. I still have Jeffrey Archer's latest, Paths of Glory that I received for Christmas so I have quite a few to read in the next little bit.

I am with you......couldn't get into the book so I didn't finish it nor did I watch the movie...

Have a Magical Disney Day!!

I second Water for Elephants. I finished it over the christmas break and LOVED it.

I'd also recommend:
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

These are three of my favorite books of all time, besides Harry Potter of course!

Nicole

30f the 4 are some of my fav I will have to look for Ender's Shadow

The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I read it simply based on how highly it was rated on Amazon, and was happy I did.

Although I don't "listen" to books, this is great for those who do - so I have heard.

Loved this book - picked it up at the library several months ago and was glad I did!

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is unbelievable. I am a Nora Roberts reader, but I read this book around the clock.

Also, The Color of Water by James McBride is his true story about being one of twelve black children raised by their white, Jewish mother. Ruth Jordan McBride died this week and I was reminded of what a remarkable mother she was.

I just finished Under the Dome by Stephen King. I really liked it.

Some other good ones that I read recently:
The geometry of sisters / Luanne Rice
Last night in Twisted River / John Irving
Little bird of heaven / Joyce Carol Oates

If you like Stephanie Plum, there is a great book called Agnes and the Hitman that has the same feel and had me absolutely laughing out loud. It has completely quirky characters just like the Plum series. I loaned it to my in laws who are big Plum book fans and they loved it too. The only problem is if you are having surgery, it might hurt to laugh!

I LOVED Pillars of the Earth. I didn't know there was a sequel. :thumbsup2 I will be getting it this week! :)

My favorite book I read last year was Water for Elephants. Everyone I know loves this book.

If you haven't read Ender's Game either, pick that book up first. These two books go together. Ender's Game is through the eyes of Ender and Ender's Shadow takes place at the same time but through the eyes of another character.

I preferred Ender's Shadow more, but it's kind of cool how they fit together. Plus, I might warn you that it is a bit sci-fi and I don't normally like sci-fi, but these were recommended by an avid reader friend of mine and I LOVED them.

She also gave me a tip when purchasing these....buy them in the young adult section, they're cheaper :-) They've got them in both the adult fiction and young adult fiction.

I have also read The Help and Water for Elephants and loved them!!! The book I have been RAVING about is Sarah's Key by de Rosnay. The weekend I read that book, I didn't clean, didn't eat, didn't talk to anyone!! I could not put this book down!! It "grabbed" me from the very first page. I then loaned it to my neighbor and she had the exact same response. It is WONDERFUL!!!
