Read any good books lately?

The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I read it simply based on how highly it was rated on Amazon, and was happy I did.

Although I don't "listen" to books, this is great for those who do - so I have heard.

Recently finished Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. Fantastic read.

I also loved The Help. I just finished reading it and I was sad when it ended. My dsis told me the audio tape is fantastic too!

I second Water for Elephants. I finished it over the christmas break and LOVED it.

I'd also recommend:
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card
Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

These are three of my favorite books of all time, besides Harry Potter of course!

Nicole

Also loved Water for Elephants and The Help.

So I was going to say I just finished The Help, but maybe you've already gotten that it's a great book ;). I also enjoyed Water for Elephants, as did others. I didn't see anyone mention The Lovely Bones; I haven't seen the movie but the book is really, really good, I could hardly put it down.

I hope your surgery goes well.

Anything Andrew Neidrman writes is good thriller suspense type stuff...he is hard to find tho his latest Gaurdian Angel just came out be quick tho once the 1st few sells out there never seems to be anymore GRRRRRRRRR i've missed a couple of his books by witin till next week to buy. NEVER do I find his books used either.

VC Andrews who Andrew Neiderrman has ghost wrote for for many many yrs I usually still read most of those books tho there has been a couple I did not bother to finish.

Jodi Picoult Handle with Care was one of her better books I really enjoyed that one.

I enjoy some of Debbie McCombers books not all....to romancy mushy for me... to girly seens the street books I enjoy.

Here is another vote for the Sookie Stackhouse novels!!!! I don't recall books like these that i just could NOT put down... I read each one fsster than the previous...

ANd another vote for anything by Fannie Flagg. She is a wonderful writer.

Philippa Gregory's historical fiction of the 16th Century Tudors reign. I'm on the 3rd book chronologically (first book I'm reading on the Kindle DH got me for our anniversary :lovestruc)

The Constant Princess - about Henry VIII 1st wife (Katherine of Aragon)
The Other Boleyn Girl - about his mistress (Mary Boleyn) & 2nd wife (Anne Boleyn)
The Boleyn Inheritance - 4th (Anne of Cleves) & 5th wives (Katherine Howard)
+ 4 more books which move into Henry VIII's heirs I believe.

more detail on this series:
http://www.philippagregory.com/work/tudor/

I've done a lot of reading on Wikipedia as well on all of the people Gregory writes about. I know it is written as fiction, but it opens up a lot of interest in the real people.

I met Phillipa Gregory last year. Our library had her for a book talk. She's a tiny British woman. Very nice.

Anyway, back to the OP, I just finished reading Not My Daughter. It's about a grouip of high school girls who form a pack to get pregnant. I didn't think I would like it, but it was written well.

HTH

I just finished reading The Hunger Games and its sequel--Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. They are technically Young Adult fiction, but I loved them. Just for reference, DH is an English teacher, and he thinks they're great, too--can't put down adventure, strong female heroine.

If you like Regency romances, which have been mentioned above, there is a new author named Sarah MacLean, and her first book is called The Season. Full disclosure-- she is a former student! It's a good story with a strong female heroine and great historical references.

If you like Janet Evanovich, I think you'd really enjoy Jennifer Cruise. Agatha and the Hitman is hilarious as well as the others.

If you like romantic suspense (think strong manly men like military:love: or CIA with strong women characters) who are fighting the bad guys of the world, I cannot say enough good things about Suzanne Brockman. Her books are each independant though you learn about most of the charcters from other books.

If you like romantic suspense bordering on scary because of the descriptions, Tami Hoag is a great read. One of her movies was made into a Lifetime movie several years ago with Valerie Bertenill and Harry Hamlin. Not all her books end up with a happy ending but they are a very intense read and not for those that have a very vivid imagination and jump at anything that creaks in the night.

Rachel Gibson books are pure fluff but fun reads. They are all paperbook but cute and some of them have reoccuring characters from other books.

If you like romantic suspense/mystery that is of the supernatural kind(think special powers not vampires), Kay Hooper has some outstanding books. They can get intense but very interesting regarding the whole special powers thing.

I can go on and on lol as I love to read and between my husband and I shipped over 300 books in our last move. We really have to scale back buying books. Of course I say this and I found a bookstore going out of business and bought 25 books, paperback and hardcover, for less than $50. I have things to last me through the winter at least.

I just got the Kindle for Christmas!
I just finished:
The Crossroad's Cafe by Deborah Smith (was free but now 9.99)
Suite Scarlette by Maureen Johnson (right now it's free)

Both were wonderful reads and very light hearted!

Right now I'm reading The Help and loving it!

I am a big Evanovich fan and have read all of her books. I am also a big
fan of Marian Keyes. She has a new book coming out the end of Jan., but
you could select any one of her books and be very happy. They are wonderful.

I also recommend the Shopoholic sereis, very entertaining.

I love this thread, I'm always looking for that next book...thanks!

How do you like the Kindle?

I've been tempted as I absolutely hate storing bookshelves full of books.

I just read Tuesdays With Morrie and it is fantastic! It had been on my mental reading list for years, but I never remembered it when I was actually buying a book to read. I came upon it by chance and was so happy to find it!

I received a couple of gift cards for Christmas that I am planning on using for books. My next selections will be Precious by Sapphire and The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas.

Good luck with your surgery OP!

I'll put in another vote for The Help, it was a great read. I am also a fan of Phillipa Gregory, esp. the books on the Tudor wives.

I've just finished reading The Piano Teacher by Janice Lee. Another very good read that I would recommend.

Happy reading!!

If you love stories with heart and love I would really recommend "Dear John" It's not a big book, it's pretty easy read but I loved the story behind it.
Loved this book. I also just finished The Last Song and it was fabulous as well

If you like the Plum novels, I think you would like Charlaine Harris' Sookie series. Very easy and fast reads that always make you want another book! :thumbsup2
I just started the The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society book, and it is good so far.
I also love the Charlaine Harris Sookie series...easy to read, very interesting and sometimes laugh out loud funny! I tried to read the Potato Peel book 4 times and i just could NOT get into it.:confused3

Recently finished Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. Fantastic read.

I agree!

My favorite all time book is "THe Glass Castle". I even bought if my my MIL for Christmas and she loved it.

Loved this book...couldn't put it down..I also read her latest one, inspired by her grandmother...can't remember the title at the moment...something about Horses?....It was EXCELLENT.

The Help was amazing.
One of my favorite books that I have read recently is Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah...absolutely wonderful. I actually have loved any of her books.

For anyone who loves Nora Roberts, I loved the Garden Trilogy...Blue Dhalia, Black Rose and Red Lily...excellent stories.

I am currently reading Southern Lights by Danielle Steel...I don't always love her books but this one is very easy to read and is very good. :)

Thanks everyone for a great list of new books to read!!! I've added some books to my library list and I'm also going to download some to my kindle. Keep the great suggestions coming!!!

How do you like the Kindle?

I absolutely love it. I was on the fence about spending the $$ on it, but reading is one the things that I do for me. I was always a reader and after
the kids came along I found the only time I read was in the summer months, and then I would read about 30 books in that time frame. Then I kind of got
away from reading, but then the Kindle came out and I wanted one right from
the start but decided to wait. Then this Christmas decided to ask for one from DH. I am absolutely in love with it:love: Not only can I read my fav authors (obviously) but it has opened up a whole new world of authors I never thought I would read just by going to the Amazon site under Kindle books and finding all the free books they offer. The selection is constantly changing so I'm checking it everyday. Right now I have 13 books on my Kindle and I didn't pay for any of them. I've read two books since Christmas on it and I have to admit that for some reason I can read faster on the Kindle.:confused3 And I love the dictionary feature. I'm still sooo new to it and haven't figured everything it can do yet, but am enjoying every minute of it. My DD volunteers at the library and brought home The Help, so I'm reading that in physical form, but feel like I'm cheating on the Kindle:rotfl:
I too have a ton of books, and I'm constantly giving them to the library as a donation. I love the fact I read when I'm in bed and not bother DH. It's small and portable and has a great battery life. I just ordered a cover for it and can't wait for it to get here... you can also visit kindleboards.com and read what others think about their Kindle.

Mary Higgins Clarks AND her daughter Carol Higgins Clark....all are GREAT!
(spelling?)

I used to like Mary Higgins Clark, but the last book I read (can't remember which one) was SO BAD! I actually picked up one of Carol's books at the airport years ago, by mistake, and it was painful. Maybe she's gotten better?

I saw Snowflower and the Secret Fan mentioned - great book. Friends rave about another one of her books, something like Peony? The Glass Castle was also really good - the Angela's Ashes of the south.

Snowflower and the Secret Fan
Peony in Love

Both by Lisa See and both FABULOUS.:)

Just finished reading Kingdom Keepers after seeing it mentioned here on the boards and seeing it at the Once Upon A Toy store in DTD. It's geared for young adults but a fun book for any Disney fan!

Now have to put a hold on Kingdom Keepers 2 at the library... :)

Carol is not the author her mother is, but the books are easy reads. I don't know if I've read Mary's lastest book, last month, I did read an older Christmas book that I somehow missed and it was great. I like to read Christmas books at Christmas!

AMAZING book! It truly moved me! I kept putting the book down because I didn't want it to end! I would highly recommend it...:thumbsup2

Never thought I'd say it - but the Twilight Series. Also, Nora Roberts has a series called Cheaspeake Blue that is good.
