Read any good books lately?

Anyone read any good books lately? I just finished the Janet Evanovich "Stephanie Plum" series and loved them. I'm going for surgery next week, so I'm looking to go to the library to stock up and/or load up my Kindle with some good books to read while I'm out of commission for a few weeks.

EVERYTHING by Dennis Lehane (esp Shutter Island), Lee Child, Nelson DeMille. Lisa Gardner is really really good too. She has a very good series.

Philippa Gregory's historical fiction of the 16th Century Tudors reign. I'm on the 3rd book chronologically (first book I'm reading on the Kindle DH got me for our anniversary :lovestruc)

The Constant Princess - about Henry VIII 1st wife (Katherine of Aragon)
The Other Boleyn Girl - about his mistress (Mary Boleyn) & 2nd wife (Anne Boleyn)
The Boleyn Inheritance - 4th (Anne of Cleves) & 5th wives (Katherine Howard)
+ 4 more books which move into Henry VIII's heirs I believe.

more detail on this series:

I've done a lot of reading on Wikipedia as well on all of the people Gregory writes about. I know it is written as fiction, but it opens up a lot of interest in the real people.

I really liked the Phillipa Gregory's books too! I listened to all three of them by audio CD and really enjoyed them!

I just read James Rollins newest book - Eden something
and Matthew Riley's newest book...they both cam out in the last couple weeks. already read both.

I am reading Clive Cussler book right now....its a Dirk Pitt one...can't remember the name;)

You could try the Eve Dallas detective series by JD Ross (Nora Roberts other pen name). There are probably 20 books in the series now so if you liked it, it would take you quite awhile to catch up.

Janet Evanovich is one of my favorite authors. I also love books in series. You really get to dig deeper. Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series is wonderful, if heavy.

Then there is Lillian Jackson Braun. The first three are the weakest three, because they were written quite some time back and are a bit dated, but if you stick with the series through them you'll be hooked. The last ones after that (and there are a lot!) are so light. I always felt like I was visiting with old friends when I got a new one.

As a history nerd, I loved the Philippa Gregory books. Stand alones that are both entertaining and well written that I would recommend are "Water for Elephants", "City of Thieves", "The Devil Wears Prada", "The Lovely Bones". and "The Historian".

I will second (or third) Water for Elephants, The Help, The Red Tent, and The Host. I did not love the Sophie Kinsella books tho'. And if you haven't read the Twilight series, you should!! The books are way better than the movies. I first mentioned the Sookie Stackhouse series because it is a series. I love series because I hate it when a good book ends!!

Loved Water for Elephants, The Help, and the Red Tent. Hated Twilight.

I, too, am a big fan of Patricia Cornwell. I didn't like the OPs series she mentioned because I couldn't get past how stupid Stephanie was. I read 3 or 4 of the series and had to quit. But, Kay Scarpetta is a brilliant, multi dimensional woman and I enjoy a smart read.

I also love anything by James Patterson. But, my favorites by him are the offbeat, bizarre ones.

I love anything by Nicholas Sparks, but they're a pretty quick read. And, I usually need a lot of tissues when I'm done.

Making a list from this thread. I went to the Library last night and had a hard time finding anything different to read. I tend to stick with Mary Higgins Clark, Nora Roberts, Danielle Steele, Jodi Picolt-etc. So, I need some new series and authors to choose from.

I'm reading the True Blood series by Charlaine Harris. They're very quick and witty reads :) I also second the Sophie Kinsella books!

Jody Piccault's (sp?) Handle with Care is an outstanding book! What a cool thread!

The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith.

Absolutely second this one. A mystery series set in Africa where situations could not happen here. But light, sweet and you learn so much about life from the main character. Love it!!

Also, the mystery series by Sue Grafton is also wonderful. She is on the letter u now, but you could easily go back, start with A and have a great time.

I LOVE Janet Evanovich!!! She mentions Disney World in several books
Sue Grafton series "A..." thru "U is for Undertow" very good series much like Stephanie Plum.
Debbie Macomber....must read! LOVE these, a series with street names (Blossom Street)
Mary Higgins Clarks AND her daughter Carol Higgins Clark....all are GREAT!
The maid series by Barbara Colley (Dusted to Death is the latest)
Lauren Berenstein has a mystery series that's really good, about dogs. ("Dog Eat Dog" "Hair of the Dog")
Hannah Sweenson (?) mysteries very funny and easy to read, also a series. ("Cheesecake murder" etc. all of the books have great cookies recipes!)
Fern Michaels...you must read the "sisterhood series" about 8 books so far, very funny!
Danielle Steel is getting too dull, they all seem about the same anymore, I did not really care for the Sophie Kin... (spelling?)

This is an oldie but a goodie - Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fannie Flagg. Lots of LOL moments. Anything by my pal Cindy Miles. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (or anything else by Neil Gaiman) While I didn't hate the Twilight Series, the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead was much better young adult read. The Body Movers Series by Stephanie Bond. I could seiously go on and on!
