Reaction to Captain EO?

We are really looking forward to seeing it! We are tired of Honey I Shrunk the Kids. I am thrilled to get to see it.

I'm pissed about this. I'm totally not interested in seeing a thing on a child predator at all. Never have been a MJ fan, I'm 22, and never will be.

Please tell me it did not take over honey I shrunk...
It did. Best to get no piss would be to skip it. :confused3

From Disnut
I got turned off to the talent of Michael Jackson after all the hoopla after his death. However, this film made me realize that at one time, Michael was the most talented man on the planet (or, on whatever planet Captain EO takes place) and it does show in this film. It's not the greatest piece of art but it was pretty darn good back in 1986.
Very nice point Disnut

Don't forget Francis Ford Coppola directed the film and George Lucas was the ep. That is a killer staff for filming and creating a show. Whether you like MJ or not it really is worth seeing. I really enjoyed seeing it again because I was about 10-12 when they stopped showing it.

Wish I could post a "Hater gon' hate" or "Hater don't know all the facts" .gif, but I digress. Love MJ and l loved Captain EO! My sis isn't a huge fan, she thought it was kind of silly. She did, however, buy a baby-t version of the shirt he wears in it. I hope it's still there next year!

OP here. Thank you all so much for your responses!

I would not have to twist my family's arms to go see this, so that is not a consideration. As I am not a Micheal Jackson fan (or hater), I would not go out of my way to see or avoid, either.

Sounds like, at best, it's pretty bad. But a WDW vet should probably have some time to see it. As there is not much new in the parks, I'll probably just go in with low expectations. Really low expectations.

This is why we had time to see on it our trip last week. There wasn't too much new in the parks for us (other than MSEP) so I really made a point to see it. I despised HISTA so it was nice to have something different to see.

Sure, it was cheesy and my DH kept head-bobbing during the show but I wanted to judge it for myself. I thought it was okay - would I wait an hour for it? No way. But I thought it was neat they brought back an attraction that was removed a long time ago to allow guests to experience it now.

Glad I can say I saw it (Aug) but it's outdated and personally I hope its run doesn't last more than a year!

WDW can do so much better with the venue AND SHOULD!!!!!

Hi! You took the words right out of my mouth! I remember when WDW was truly state of the art. This Captain EO is nothing more than a cheap side show. I too liked Michael Jackson, but the movie is cheesy, it's not the standard that we all know from Disney. It's like a bad horror movie, you can't wait for it to be over.

Now I'm looking forward to seeing this next month! Either it'll be good, campy bad, or a total trainwreck. Either way, seems like it'll be entertaining in one form or another! popcorn::

I'm glad that we got the chance to see it again. It was fun and silly but of course the effects were bad because of how old it is. It is certainly better than that tiresome HISTA.

I do hope that they have big plans for the pavilion though. Not much imagination there.

Almost anything they do with that pavillion would be better than Captain EO.
Some suggest leaving it empty would have been better.
But you won't hear that from me:)

I'd love to see the logic that went into bring back Capt EO:

Super outdated - Check.
Marginal technology - Check.
Pedophile - Check.
Role model for drug abuse - Check.

I guess OJ Simpson never did a 3D film, or they may have considered him.

Pretty sure I'm not going to this crap.

Only 12 posts and you caught onto the Dis-board spirit.

You do realize that Captain EO is from the 80s right? It's not new. These effects were top notch when the film was created. It was put back in as a tribute to MJ after he passed away, so of course it's not going to be up to the same standards that Disney is up to now. Soon enough, it will be moved out of the pavilion, and something else will go in its place.

I have seen it, but not in WDW. One of my very best friends is OBSESSED with MJ and she showed it to me from a video she had. It was super cheesy but I love MJ so it was all worth it :teeth:

I think the point is that many of us WDW fans got hooked after this attraction went away. Regardless of the state of the technology or the performer, it was huge in its day, I missed it and I'm glad to get a chance to see it. Once may be enough, who knows. I'd also love to experience 20,000 Leagues and other long gone Disney hits, I'll have to settle for this and MSEP next March.

I saw it when it first opened at Disneyland and saw it again last week. I loved it. The 3-D is crap, technology has come quite far since then, but seeing the talent of Michael Jackson (both in his voice and his ability to move) was great.
:thumbsup2

Come on, folks! It's all about the nostalgia! It's not supposed to be state-of-the-art any more. It's supposed to be a fond look back at a man who was the tops in his industry when the film was made, and who died too young. (No matter how you feel about his not-so-private life, he truly was an inspired performer!) I saw Captain EO on opening day at Disneyland, and people LOVED and ADORED it! We waited in line for hours to see it, and nobody complained that it was a waste of time. It was, at the time, state-of-the-art, had a fabulous sound system, and teased us with the kind of 3D effects we had only dreamed of prior to that. I saw it over and over again back then. It was a stupid plot even in the 80's, but so many music videos had stupid plots! This one was just longer and larger than most. It was funny back then, too! It was all an excuse to watch Micheal Jackson dance and sing!

I can hardly wait to get to WDW to see it again. I really, REALLY hope it's still playing by the time I get there!

Sayhello

I've never seen it. How doe this compare to other WDW 3-D movies? How different is the theatre after the changeover? Should I take time away from seeing some of the live performances at WS?

TIA.

My reactions: creeped out, bored, and totally mad I wasted my time and can't have that 15 minutes of my life back. If our children would have been with us a trip to guest services would have been in order b/c I know those creatures would have freaked DS5 out big time. There needs to be some kind of warning for those of us who were 4 when Captain EO came out for the first time and never saw it.

Now on to your questions.
1. It is horrible. The quality of the movie is the original 80's quality (or close to it, I was too young to remember 3D then), the 3D effects are blurry and not effective.
2. Nothing has really changed in the theater, it is still the same setup as HISTA. They have swapped out the posters and signs of course to read Captain EO.
3. HECK no. Everything in WS even watching the CM's sweep the walkways is more entertaining than that horror show.

I saw it years ago and I will give it a try again next month. I'm sure it will look dated and cheesy but MJ was a great performer and I want my daughter to see this movie. She became slightly obsessed with trying to moonwalk when she saw all those news clips after MJ died.
