Reaction to Captain EO?

They said that it is going to run untill June or July of next year. Its a limited run. I hope that they replace HISTA with a new film.

I love it!!!

I didn't grow up with this show or MJ since I was born in 1990, but I have been a MJ fan for the past five or six years... although this show is very cheesy, I love it- especially the singing, dancing, and costumes!! It's just a fun show. I saw it three times on our last visit- even my 15 year old cousin (who likes to complain and make fun of stuff) and 10 year old cousin enjoyed it!

I do have a movie poster from the show hanging in my room... :)

I saw it for the first time last month... Disney owes me about 40 minutes of my life I'll never get back... I'd rather slam my skull into the nearest brick wall then to sit through EO again... I did enjoy making fun of it though, so it's got that going for it:)...

Lots of EO haters on the board, BUT there is some EO love too. I have never seen it. LOVED MJ back in the 80's, Grew up then and loved it! Wouldn't trade my 80s for ANY other decade thus far. I can't wait to see captain EO for the first time next month. I will say my expectations aren't high..BUT I am hoping i enjoy it enough once or twice.

If you have nothing else to do it, go ahead, it's good for a laugh,
we saw it back in the late 90's and thought it was just ok.
we saw it in July and really disliked it. it really doesn't have much in the way of 3 D effects. the story line is stupid, and it IS cheesy. (I wouldn't honor it with the work "campy", I love campy)
If you are a big MJ fan, I guess you might like it.
but I wouldn't miss anything else to see it.

the only good thing about HISTA beign gone is they no longer MAKE you sit through that stupid preshow. just once, I want the kid to NOT find his lost dog, and the lost dog eats the frog!!!

I saw it in late Aug. My sis and I laughed quite a few times and thought it was entertaining, at the time it was made, and with all that were involved in it...it was pretty amazing to be done.

My niece 14 and nephew 8...not so impressed, although niece did comment on how he danced like Usher :rotfl:

I'm going back in December, I won't mind seeing it again if DH is interested...though I'd probably not push it.

:rotfl2: Now, that would be worth seeing in 3D! I hated the preshow and the constant disembodied voice asking us to move all the way to the front and left. What torture do they put you through now?

As for EO, saw it years ago and will make a stop once for memory sake, but will it be worth repeat visits - doubt it.

Saw it this summer, it was so cheesy and dated, but I did enjoy it a little. Problem was, the 3D effets are so bad it actually hurt to watch. I had tears in my eyes at the end, which prompted an annoyed "Are you crying AGAIN?" from my sister
Gee, you cry once at St Paul's church and it follows you the whole summer....

On another note, Silvite, Captain EO is not ABOUT Michael Jackson.

I'd love to see the logic that went into bring back Capt EO:

Super outdated - Check.
Marginal technology - Check.
Pedophile - Check.
Role model for drug abuse - Check.

I guess OJ Simpson never did a 3D film, or they may have considered him.

Pretty sure I'm not going to this crap.

I've never seen it. How doe this compare to other WDW 3-D movies? How different is the theatre after the changeover? Should I take time away from seeing some of the live performances at WS?

TIA.

I dragged DH on it a couple weeks ago because neither of us had ever seen it.

HONEST REACTION when it was over.... me: "I am SO sorry...." DH:

LOL. We plugged our ears the whole time because it was sooooooo loud (and they warn you about that ahead of time). I'm sorry to those who love this ride-- we'll NEVER do it again.

As a teen if the 80's I appreciated it. Of course it doesn't compare to movies and effects of today, but some of the best movies in history are the classiscs from years ago. Just remember this is a re-release of a 25-year old movie. I bet some of the people on this post bash Wizard of Oz for bad effects too. Just go see it and judge for yourself.

We started walking there wanting to see "honey" and found it replaced with this.We were terribly dissapointed that HONEY was gone and more so after sitting through this.I actually contemplated leaving a couple of times.Oh well, one less thing to do at Epcot.I wonder if disney was trying to capitalize on his death.

It got a very strong positive reaction from the crowd at Epcot when I saw it a few weeks back. Lots of cheering and clapping.

But the film itself is a touch blurry, there is some double vision around the 3D elements, it is pre-CGI so the stop-motion bits look very cheesy, and the audio mix is rather poor, you can barely understand what MJ is singing, plus the dance routine is no where near as dynamic as what they might do today.

On the plus side, it will show you the inspiration for the Borg, that Lucas started "going bad" WELL before the prequels, and remind you of what 80s era 3D was all about so you won't be so hard on Piranah 3D :P

Wow. Sounds like apples to oranges.

Keep in mind this isn't Netflix, and we aren't renting classics. Disney charges becoup bucks admission for the attractions. It might be unfair, but I feel like if you pay that much money they could at least try.

Are you going to argue that Capt EO has redeeming plot features or acting to make up for the dated special effects?

Are you actually going to put this in a "classic" category like Wizard of Oz?

Disney put this in solely based upon the apparent redemption of MJ when he died. Something else will end up here eventually-as others have said, it's a 25 year old movie....and it looks like a 25 year old movie. The effects are...from a 25 year old movie. It's not the top-notch kind of thing we expect from Disney, but it will stick around until something else is ready to move in.

I saw it in September. It was worth the half an hour. I probably wouldn't wait long for it, or invest a great deal of energy in getting there to see it if I was on a shortened schedule. Definitely an "if we have time" attraction.

You won't miss much.

I liked Michael Jackson's songs a lot. Still do. But I question the wisdom of selecting a star who was - at best - a freaky-weird drug addict to put back up on the big screen and promote. Disney has changed their image a lot this last 10 years. Miley Cyrus, Vanessa whatshername, Michael Jackson...gone are the days of Annette, that's for sure!

But aside from the icky personal Michael Jackson stuff...even if it were someone else...the movie is just a bore.

Don't bother.

Shamon.

OP here. Thank you all so much for your responses!

I would not have to twist my family's arms to go see this, so that is not a consideration. As I am not a Micheal Jackson fan (or hater), I would not go out of my way to see or avoid, either.

Sounds like, at best, it's pretty bad. But a WDW vet should probably have some time to see it. As there is not much new in the parks, I'll probably just go in with low expectations. Really low expectations.

We wnet to see it in August. I had never seen it before. I was a child of the 80s and i remember when Thriller was an THE BIGGEST EVENT EVER in my young life. That being said, I am still a fan a MJ back in the day. But over the years all the craziness just soured me to him in the later years. ( But I still do love the 80s stuff!)

So, I made my DH and DS (5) see it with me. My poor husband wanted to GOUGE HIS EYES OUT after seeing it LOL. I thought it was funny...very dated and silly. My son was confused. He was very restless, didn't want to sit still and he is usually very good in the movie attractions. After the movie he said..."I thought it was supposed to be Michael jackson"...I said "It was MJ"...he said..."no it wasn't, that was a girl. I thought Michael Jackson was a boy." Mind you, he has no experience with MJ and I don't think he had ever heard his voice before. I think he heard the voice and assumed it was a girl. LOL

Then as we were walking out he saw the EO T-shirt kiosk and wanted one. My DH put the kibosh on that request LOL.
