Can someone explain the difference between this room:
PREFERRED ROOM - GTD LOCATION/VARIED VIEW NEAR LOBBY, MAIN POOL, TRANSPORTATION AND FOOD COURT BEDDING IN ROOMS NOT GTD CAN HAVE 2 DOUBLE BEDS - MAX PTY 4 OR 1 KING BED - MAX PTY 2 ALL ROOM TYPES WILL ACCOMODATE 1 INFANT UNDER 3 IN A CRIB INCLUDE TOTAL NUM IS PTY AND CHILDRENS AGES IN SI-FIELD

and this one:
STANDARD ROOM - VARIED LOCATION/VARIED VIEW BEDDING IN ROOMS NOT GTD CAN HAVE 2 DOUBLE BEDS - MAX PTY 4 OR 1 KING BED - MAX PTY 2

other than the view?

The only difference is the location. Preferred rooms are close to the main building and bus stops.

As epcotfan said it's location, location, location. All the rooms are the same size and the only thing that changes between the different buildings is the theming.

Preferred rooms are the two buildings closest to the food court/bus stop/main pool.

Standard rooms are all the other buildings.

Example: ASMovies preferred is Fantasia
ASSMusic preferred is Calypso
ASSports preferred is Surfs Up(I think)

I would never pay the $10 per night difference to stay at a "preferred" All Star building. Some of the other buildings are just as close or nearly so.

I agree with peg. I stayed at ASMo in the Mighty Ducks section, and the walk wasn't bad at all. Sure, it is a few steps farther than the preferred room, but the All-Star resorts aren't spread out wide enough to make it worth it.

At one time all the buildings at the All-Stars were equal. But people started requesting the building closest to the main building/food court/bus stop. Apparently they did not want to walk to the farther buildings. As time went on, more and more people put in the same request til the resorts had a hard time satisfying everyone's request. Now they had unhappy guests on their hands. So they made these often-requested buildings "preferred" and tacked on a daily charge if you wanted the convenience of these closer buildings. Now if you wanted the closer building, you had to pay for it. This caused the demand for these buildings to go down to a "supply" level where WDW could satisfy the demand.

Now we see it happening to the Caribbean Beach Resort with the 2004 rates.

Which resort will be next?

We ended up booking our last two nights at CB...got a rate of 116.00 (NOT the preferred view).

Just my 2 cents, but the Country Fair building at ASMu is a really long hike to the buses and food court. I would do whatever I had to not to have to stay back there again. It was especially bad because we were there on a very rainy week. That walk in the pouring rain seems like an eternity. And in the evening after a long day of park hopping, the walk back to the room gets even LONGER.

We stayed at ASMu in Feb.03 and it was worth the extra $10(if we had paid it.. got an upgrade for free lucky us). The walk was about 15 minutes to our first room from the transportation and after a long day in the park with a tired 5yr old was a very LONG 15minutes. It looks as if the sports and the Movies rooms are much closer together so the extra $10/night might not be worth it.

We are paying the extra $$ to get the preferred rooms for our trip in Sept. With a 2, 5, and 7 year old we feel its well worth the extra bucks: teeth:

I've stayed at the AS Movies & AS Music (can't speak about AS Sports...)...

For Movies, all are pretty close and I wouldn't pay extra (besides I love Toy Story whichis cheaper than the "preferred" selection). THe buildings are set up almost in a circle around the pool/food/court, etc...so nothing is too far away.

However, AS Music is set up very differently -- it's more like a straight line of buildings (rather than a circle) and you are darn right the Country building is way far away -- and I too would pay anything not to stay there again, with all the little tired babies I'm always toting around!

Count me in as someone who just automatically tacks on $10 per night when we stay at ASMu. We were only in Rock Inn and that was a long haul -- I can't imagine walking to Country Fair or the far end of Broadway after a day in the parks!

And as for noise -- we were pool-side, ground floor in Calypso at the tail end of Spring Break. The pool was PACKED at about 10 pm, and I was so afraid we would get no sleep. I was wrong -- we could hear no noise.

The potties, on the other hand, are another story -- they are LOUD, lol!

I would gladly shell out another $10 a night for the convenience to the main entrance and building. I was stuck at the backside of Rock Inn once (for nearly two weeks) and it was quite the distance walking back and forth. Never again.
