I spoke with MS this morning and they are extremely accomodating. Ressies may be cancelled without penalty. They are not accepting new ressies since members currently there may need to extend their stay. We are scheduled to drive down on Sat and plan to hold out until the last minute. I was assured that my points would be returned to my account even as late as Monday.

DVC is usually very accommodating in extreme cases like this. Hope all goes well, and this one doesn't hit WDW OR Vero!

Actually, they are now cancelling all Vero reservations, even without first speaking to the member.

I just called to take care of it, and they had already cancelled my reservations, as the area has been evacuated.

I called home and, sure enough, there were two messages on my answering machine.

Beth -- Have they moved you to WDW?

No - I didn't ask, and they didn't offer.

But, from what I hear, rooms on property are pretty scarce right now.

Honestly, Orlando is not where I would want to be this weekend.

I hear that the WDW rooms are booked full..the Tom Joyner reunion scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled, and we cancelled our weekend trip last nite...that is good, maybe those evacuating can use the vacant rooms....Theya re also calling for a voluntary evacuation in Orlando, as well....The 11:00am report shows the storm has moved a bit to the west, and now looks like it will pass to the west of Orlando...maybe right OVER WDW???
Pixie dust to all the Floridians.....

Spoke to Jecefy at MS. She was very accommodating. Cancelled easily without penalty. MS is open until 7PM tonight to handle cancels. Jecefy said they may not be open tomorrow (Friday) at all.

I'm now on waitlist for Oct 14 - 18. I know that's F&W, so I hope we get in. I told her we'll take any resort.

{{{sigh}}}Well, although my heart is broken due to the cancellation, I think it was the right thing to do. It will be hard enough for the locals to take care of themselves, so there's no need for us to add 4 tourists to equation.

Please send Pixie Dust for our reschedule.
Thanks.
Kelley

I just cancelled the GV!!! :(
It was my dream, but this is so minor compared to peoples homes and lives.
I will be praying for everyone tonight.

I am not as lucky as you all since I rented the points for a 1 bedroom for 8 days at OKW thru someone and they in turned booked the ressie thru interval international who deals directly to DVC. I have all my papers, have talked to Disney the past few months. It was all perfect. Now Frances! So I called DVC who told me to call Interval directly saying they deal with them all the time and it won't be a problem - they will call us and set up another week stay. Well, I have been calling and calling with no luck since first thing this AM with no one answering. Then at 2pm their message just came on saying they closed done until further notice due to the hurricane. Then called Disney who says they can not change or cancel our reservations unless Interval agrees. I begged them! All I wanted to do was delay the check in date to allow my room to go to others and then use the full week when they allow me to arrive or even just switch to Sept 11-18th - nope. Then I said, can't I just cancel the room for others to use - nope. So now by the time Interval gets back into their offices on Tues or whenever, my vacation would have already been half done and I am sure they won't do anything for me by then. I have even called the person numerous times that I rented the points from and am still awaiting a call back but it seems like I am out thousands of dollars :( and there is going to be a room at OKW that can not be used for a stranded Floridian. I even thought about flying down tonight anyway since I didn't want to waste my hard earned money and my dd's b-day vacation but I am not going to chance it.

Oh well - just my luck but a leason was learned. I know to book thru Disney next time no matter what the cost.

Your situation gets more complicated by the hour. If someone got an exchange through II then rented it to you, they are in violation of their II agreement. If you talk to II and let them know about this issue, it is likely they will cancel the exchange and reprimand the member. And it is unlikely the II member will be able to get you another exchange. You may very well lose what you paid AND the week as well. I would talk to the person you rented from before doing ANYTHING ELSE

I don't understand - my name is on the reservation thru Interval International as a guest certificate and I haven't had any problems when I talked to them or the renter or Disney. Oh well - probably why the renter isn't calling me back. This is my first time renting points so very new to this but it is definately my last.

Thanks for the info though

Suzanne, the person you rented from is either not a DVC member OR if they are, they went the alternate route and got an II exchange. Then they rented to you for a sizable profit. It is against II's rules for an II member to rent an exchange though it's done all the time. It's OK for you to talk to II and to DVC but if you tell II your rented the week, that's where problems are likely to begin for both you and the person you rented from. It is within II's rights to cancel the exchange and keep all exchange fees as well as the week the II member gave up. In essence, you'd both be out the full amount. Whether II will go this route is unknown to me but I can tell you that RCI (the other big exchange company like II) would cancel the exchange, refund the exchange fee and sanction the member, likely by restricting their online privileges or canceling their membership depending on previous experiences with the member.

As to canceling, here's the process. The II member would cancel and lose their exchange fee. They'd get a week back to trade but it would be no where near the quality or trade strength of what they gave up and under normal rules, could only be used for things less than 14 days out. If they used an accommodation certificate, they would get nothing back if they cancel. The chances of them getting you another DVC week would depend in part on the expiration of the week they were using, maybe they could get you another Orlando unit maybe a Marriott. There would be another exchange fee and guest certificate fee.. Regardless, the next two weeks and January after the holiday are about the only things likely to be available. The likelihood is if you cancel, you will get nothing back and the II member will get little or nothing back.

My guess is it's your choice to go or not but you are likely on the hook for this exchange. You should know that under II's rules, if you went and the resort is not even still there, they would have no liability or obligation, at least under their written agreement.

thank you for all the information. I feel really stupid now but it seemed completely legal - esp since disney has my reservation number and confirmed everything with me. Obviously I haven't talked to the person - although she was very easy to reach before.

I understood everything but this...

What do you mean if the resort is not even still there??

Do you mean the room itself? Well, I talked to DVC and they said they will still hold our room since we can not cancel and I said that we are temporarily set to fly in Monday AM. Southwest said, depending on the storm, possibly even Sunday night - since we were the first flight out Friday that is was cancelled due to MCO closing. Obviously that all depends on the hurricane but even if we only miss one or two days it is better than missing out on everything.

Thanks again for keeping me informed. I really appreciate you taking the time.

We cancelled for tomorrow through Tues today. I was told all points would go back to where they came from. Some had been borrowed for this trip, so is it possible they will go back to next year?

I waited to cancel because we just had Charley a few weeks ago and we were supposed to take a direct hit then the sudden unexpected turn and it hit over 100 miles south of us. They had told us to head for Orlando but Disney said they were not taking any new ressies.. since they had a lot of people who wouldn't be able to leave.

They evacuated patients from a hospital in Vero to a hospital and rehab here on the west coast today. I just hope they don't have all these people come here and then we get hit.

Is there going to be anything left for us to go to?

100MPH+ winds do not sound good.

Our AKL vacation at the end of Sep - what gonna happen?

Glad to help but sorry for your situation. II (and RCI) protect themselves. Their rules state in part
...a Member may not request substitute exchange accommodations where such Member has canceled or has lost the use of a Confirmation as a resort of the Host Accommodations been damaged or destroyed or where such damage or destruction is imminent.
Essentially if you agree to an exchange and the resort is wiped out by Charley or Frances, etc, you are out of luck. Now they do try to help when they can. They also offer insurance you can buy. Whether such one side wording would hold up in court is another matter but in RCI's words to a TUG member, "we have a legal department for people like you".

Your trip will be fine, as will ours a couple of weeks later. After the first hurricane, the parks opened the next day.
