Rate the Ride: Matterhorn Bobsleds

My DH, DS6, and I LOVE this ride, but DS8 hates it (he says he loves it, but throws a fit when we get in line )

So I posted above that DS5 wouldn't go back on Matterhorn out of all the scary rides ... last night we were watching DS14's band trip DVD including some stills of the high school kids at DLR. DS5 caught a glimpse of the Matterhorn and said, "hey, I love that ride!":confused3 Gotta love revisionist history.

On a side note, DS14 said their photographer was taking shots of the kids in groups as they came down Main Street and he and his friend were the first ones. I told him I trained him well -- no wasting time in Disneyland! He was out there collecting FPs, showing his friend all the cool rides ... I have never been so proud!:thumbsup2

LOVE it!! Daytime, nighttime, left side, right side (the left side is faster!)!!!

How would you rate this ride for someone with a bad neck? I'd like to try it, but I've always been afraid of the jerkiness.

I'd be weary of riding it with any spinal/neck issues at all.

I've ridden it many, many times, and while I feel like the issue is more the jarring of the spine as opposed to being flung around (which would obviously be bad on an already iffy neck...), it's all connected, so personally, I'd avoid it.

As far as my rating of the ride....we ride it every time we go, but I do find it uncomfortable and I also find the abominable snowman roars entirely too loud and totally annoying...if they'd just turn down the volume a bit it would be so much better, IMHO. The only thing that makes it fun, for me, is that it winds through a mountain. If it wasn't in a mountain (or similarly fun-themed structure), I'd never ride it.

I actually saw someone take a pillow (or cushion) with them on the ride to sit on. The back and forth isn't so bad. It's the "lift you up and slam you down" that hurts (if you're not paying attention and actively compensating for it).

one of my favorites and family's favorite. we ride it a few times when we visit.

We think that the TL side is rougher than FL side - do you agree?

Also which side tends to have the shorter line - if there is a difference?

I've never been to DLR. My first question about the Matterhorn is how it compares to BTMRR. Faster or slower? Bigger or smaller drops? More or less thrilling?

Then I'd have to ask how you would compare BTMRR to the one in WDW.

Thanks.

To me there is really no difference between the DLR and WDW versions of BTMRR. I'm sure there are a few little differences, but the intensity is the same.

I think Matterhorn is overall more tame than BTMRR on an intensity scale. BTMRR goes faster and has bigger drops. But Matterhorn is a rougher ride and the combination of the dark and the yeti can make it scarier for children. BTMRR is pretty much out in the open and obvious what kind of ride it is.

I'd say they're about equal in terms of awesomeness as well as my love for them. :cloud9: Big Thunder Mountain is faster and has bigger drops, but is also much smoother. Matterhorn is a bit jerky, but nothing extreme. Anyone in good health should easily be able to handle it. Matterhorn still gets up and goes, is really exciting, and has some nice drops here and there, but it's not as big or fast as Thunder. One thing about Matterhorn though are the great views you get while riding it. The views are even better than anything on Thunder, for the most part. Plus, I think they pump cool air into the mountain or something, because it always feels like cool breeze inside, no matter how hot it is outside.

Don't forget that there are two sides.... Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. Both of which offer a different ride. Be sure to ride both sides before judging the overall attraction. You may like one side but love the other, or vis versa.

In my opinion, Thunder Mountain at Disneyland is better than the one at Disney World. (Same with POTC; much better at DL) They're both very similar, but Big Thunder just seems to pack more of a punch at DL.

I agree that the TL side seems rougher. I have somewhat of a bad back and always prefer to ride the FL side. In my experience, the TL side usually has a longer line.

I agree! :goodvibes

LOVE this ride! it has been a favorite of mine for as long as i can remember! however...when i was little i wasn't exactly a fan of the abominable snowmen :)! I have to agree it is a bit jerky. i have been on it multiple time and it never feels the same! sometimes it isn't as jerky as the time before ...sometimes it's faster.. and sometimes it's slower. Best time to ride is DEFINITELY at night!
