OK- I'm sure this is a dumb question- but here goes.... do the rashguard shirts (particularly Old Navy ones) block rays from the sun? We live in Alabama- so no surfers here- and we've always just used a t-shirt when the kids got sun-burnt at the beach (which has only happened once). But, we just returned from a weekend at the lake and dd9 got burnt on her back yesterday and wore a t-shirt all day today when swimming. The kids don't like the t-shirt thing, so we were thinking about buying rashguard shirts and like the ones from old navy. Do they really block the sun and keep you from getting burned? Any info would be helpful!!!
TIA!

My peds says it has to say SPF/UVA or something like that the old navy ones do not say that but the Lands end ones do. That is why they are more money.

Even the non-certified ones are better than a wet t-shirt though. At best those are equivalent to about SPF 5.

I just bought DS one at Target today - Cherokee brand. It was $10.99 and the tag says "UPF 50+"

I bought my daughter one from Gap that says SPF 50 on it for $4.97 ( on clearance). I am hoping that it will help when we are there in July.

I was wondering about these, too.
Thanks for sharing that Target has some, it is my favorite store.:cool1:

Land's End's are SPF 50 as well. We love them - they last until the kids outgrow them (and they wear them several times a week all summer), then we pass them on in great shape!

I'm pretty sure the old navy ones said spf 50, our kids each have 2 of them, and have never gotten burnt, and we are really fair. Maybe the canada ones are different than the us ones...

I know the ones we got at Old Navy last year said SPF 50. They still fit (yeah!) so haven't looked at any this year...

I bought boy ones from Target and girl ones from the Disney store and they have all worked well for blocking the sun and my kids are very fair.

Thanks so much for the info guys! I think I may order the ones from Old Navy and if they aren't spf 50, I'll take them back to the store. DD9 is picky these days- doesn't want anything too babyish and wants to look cool and they have really cute ones. If those aren't spf50, I'll order some from Lands End or somewhere.
Since I have no Disney trip in sight, guess I'll obsess over our beach trip! :goodvibes
Thanks!

I just bought some Lands End rashguards for DS10 at Sears yesterday. They are 30% off right now....great deal!!!

I emailed customer service at Old Navy about the rashguards and the representative emailed me back saying their rashguards were equal to 40+ upf. Thanks for all the help guys- it is greatly appreciated.
Now, if you put rashguards on your children - do you put sunscreen on their stomachs under the rashguards too to double up or just let the rashguards do the work?

That's one way I save money. We use the rashguards too and I only sunscreen the skin I see. With 5 boys not having to sunscreen their backs and stomachs saves me quite a bit! :thumbsup2

I don't put sunscreen on under the rashguard and haven't had a burn yet. HTH!

Now, if I could just find one to fit me that wasn't too boy-ish and doesn't cost upwards of $45!

I dont use sunscreen under it and no burn yet, we use the Old Navy brand and have for yrs. Love them!

Thanks so much for the info guys! You are always so helpful on any topic!!! I plan to buy the Old Navy ones- good price and very stylish- which should satisfy dd9!

I have surf shirts for my kids, not rashguards. They are thicker, have long sleeves (well mine do) and an spf but I also spray them down with sunscreen before I make them put them on. A rashguard shirt is typically just so you don't get a rash from the sand. My kids were sick of getting sandburn on their arms and stomachs bodysurfing. Over time the SPF in shirts washes out til there is none. I believe there is a special detergent you can use on all of your clothes to give them an SPF.

Please use sunscreeen under their rashguards..... Just becasue they don't burn doesn't mean there isn't damage. It is not a "good way to save money!"

Speedo also carries a children's rash guard - can't remember the SPF. If I remember correctly, it was about $20 on the Speedo website.

I'm a big Speedo fan - after 10 years of having kids involved in competitive swimming, I have found the Speedo brand to be very durable even with 5+ wearings per week for intense workouts. Haven't bought the rashguard yet, but will be getting one for youngest DD who's fair and burns easily. I'm not about to buy them for the teenaged girls - they're too picky!
