Random WDW Info - I Never Knew!

Cinderella's Golden Carrousel was built in 1918 for an amusement park in New Jersey. Disney restored it, making each horse unique and adding the calliope music. It's the oldest attraction in DisneyWorld.

I thought the Steam Trains were older and refurbished from Mexico. I'm not 100% sure but I know they, too, are very old.

Ah, those wonderful Disney bus drivers...
One of those bus drivers was the one who told me that Disney as a company was too large to be bought by any individual or group of individuals.

before I leave to put in my Little Mermaid movie, do you happen to know the uh, circumstances surrounding the graphic picture on the cover????
Has anyone ever REALLY confirmed that???

I have a friend who was REALLY anti-Disney. Many MANY years ago he showed me a video tape once of several "obscenities" in Disney movies, including the word SEX in the dust of Lion King, a small voice that said "children take your clothes off", and many many more (some to vulger to mention here) hidden scenes and such. We went out and rented several of them out of curiousity one night. Don't get me wrong... I always thought it would be REALLY easy for an employee to "slip something" into the movie for bragging rights if it were really hard to spot, and I didn't doubt for a second that it was there. We rented most of the movies on the list, and we could not find ONE SINGLE INCIDENT mentioned. We were hoping to see something, because at the time, we weren't fans of Disney. We couldn't find anything at any of the places the stuff was supposed to be. I've seen pictures of the Little Mermaid cover, but I've never seen the cover look like those pictures. I'm not saying it's NOT true, but I have never seen it to BE true either.

But why does the Dolphin look like a fish-not a dolphin?

I've been here on the DIS for many years under several different user IDs. The Swan and the Dolphin are the single biggest "no one REALLY seems to know" argument I've seen here. I've seen experts argue about them. To me, they are just cool resorts. I try to look past all that history stuff, because it gets too confusing for my blood. Either way... you all have to agree they are BEAUTIFUL resorts regardless of what the animals / architecture suggests or is.:thumbsup2

The Tinkerbell/bill debate has been beaten but I did want to add that I've met a TinkerBELL who is most def a female, petite and thin. She said she has to climb out of a small window and be pushed out by one of her two attendants - and that the powerpack is very heavy. I can't imagine there are very many men that are small enough to do the job but I suppose anything is possible. I had no idea anyone thought Tinkerbell was a man or I would have asked her! (she also works elsewhere in the parks and rotates as Tinkerbell)

I thought the trains were from the Roaring 20's, but I could be wrong.

Correct for the most part. :thumbsup2

Locomotive No. 1 - the Walter E. Disney
Year Built: 1925

Locomotive No. 2 - the Lilly Belle
Year Built: 1928

Locomotive No. 3 - the Roger E. Broggie
Year Built: 1925

Locomotive No. 4 - the Roy O. Disney
Year Built: 1916

Cinderella's Golden Carousel was actually built in 1917. But the Roy O. Disney still predates it by a year. :)

I believe the Poly has the only hidden tinkerbell...although we've never really looked, I think I know where it may be.

There's also a Tinkerbell carved in the "rocks" outside the exit of the BTMRR. A CM showed it to us last week. He said most people don't see it because they whiz right by to get to the next ride.

This has been debated for a long time, and for the life of me, I can't find the web site that addresses the rumors about things in the movie. With respect to the Little Mermaid cover, that is completely false. The false story went that a disgruntled employee put an inappropriate graphic. As discussed on this website I mentioned, a Disney employee stated this was false and completely inadvertant. Once angry parents (who apparently must have had their head in the gutter to think of this as obscene) complained, Disney reprinted the graphic for future use. The Lion King movie, the letters spell SFX a little hidden tribute to a company/brand. The Aladdin movie is also discussed on that website (again wish I had it at the handy to post here).

My father has been a long-term Starwood, previously Sheraton employee, and we have been visitors to the Dolphin since the year it opened. I'm fairly well-versed in the history of the hotel, and while anything I say here cannot completely end any debate. I assure DISers that it IS a dolphin as several have posted. It is a dolphin FISH. I believe there is even a similar sculpture somewhere in the Italy pavilion. It certainly is a dolphin sharing no resemblance to our dear friend Flipper, but it is still a "dolphin". Architect Michael Graves who designed the hotel elected the version of the dolphin seen at the resort for artistic purposes.

Hope that all helps!

:woohoo: I made it through half of these pages(well I skipped around)and I'm still overwhelmed!!! I love this thread and I love all of these facts and "facts"!!;)

Also, I think I might have one(hopefully it's right): In one day, Disney washes over 75,000 clothes(costumes, guests, etc) and dry cleans over 35,000!!! I'm glad not to have that job!!!!:scared1: I could be wrong about those facts, but I'll check it tonight when I go home!!!

I've been wondering about those big baobob trees in Africa in Animal Kingdom. I saw one near the entrance to the safari, and also along the safari route. They look like they are upside down, with roots up in the air.

One of the cast members said they are real and Disney brought them all the way from Africa and planted them. But later I read something online that said they are artificial. I am wondering which is true? If they brought them from Africa, wouldn't there be the worry of bringing in disease or insect infestation to Florida?

I also noticed the unusual sausage tree by the shops in Africa, which I was told is also real. I think this is true because I remember seeing one in Cypress Gardens in their botanical gardens.
Actually there is only one real Baobab Tree in AK. It is outside of Tusker House and it looks nothing like the cement monsters you see in the safari. It takes over a hundred years for them to grow that big. A friend of mine from South Africa said that he once saw one that had a small pub inside of it.

I have enjoyed this thread so much.
Here's one for ya.
The CMs are all trained to use 2 fingers when pointing--as in giving directions-so as not to offend anyone because in some cultures it is rude to point with one finger.

And even this particular Baobab tree isn't from Africa. It was found growing just outside of Miami. Disney reportedly purchased it for quite a considerable sum. :flower2:

I learned recently that the colorful benches at the AK are made from recycled milk jugs. The only drawback to these benches is that they absorb more heat than wood benches so are hotter to sit on.

I can confirm some of the movie instances. Yes there is some questionable artwork on the front of the original "Little Mermaid" I own it and can confirm. I don't know whether it was intentional or not but when discovered it was yanked from shelves and redone. I have seen something that looks like sex in the "Lion King" movie and definetly heard the "take your clothes off" in Alladin.
I have also paused the movie "The rescuers" and seen the dirty pic of a woman. I bought all these movies when they were first released on VHS and I believe these things when found were removed from later releases.

it is SFX as already stated in a previous post.

I bet that copy is worth a good chunk of money. I've looked at several of them on VHS at yard sales, and I've not seen one yet.

I don't know what the actual scences were supposed to look and sound like but I can tell you that I have watched and listened to both scenes numerous times and they appear to say sex and take off your clothes! the rescuers bit has been confirmed on several other websites! I can see how the other things could be mistaken but freeze frame that particular scene and there is no denying a topless woman. The first time I saw it my jaw hit the floor.

Space and Big Thunder Mountain only move at 26 mph! Pretty slow for a roller coaster. The Monorail was the fastest ride in Disney until Test Track was installed in Epcot..
