Without thinking, Willa quickly pulled her shoe off and threw it in front of the speeding car as hard as she could. The shoe soared over the windshield and fell into the crack that hid the extra wheels from view. Nothing happened at first, but there was a violent shudder as the car went over the shoe. The vehicle leaned to the left and some of the hidden wheels became exposed. There was an ear-splitting screeching sound as metal grinded on metal and the car started to decelerate. It crashed into the wreckage from the previous car, but caused very little damage and left the teens uninjured.

Instead, it bounced off the front of the car, and activated an emergency brake concealed in the bonnet. The car shuddered and came to a sudden stop, inches away from the wreckage.

Which one sounds better? First was my original idea, but feels too unbelievable. Second was a suggested idea, but was used in Kingdom Keepers 3 at some point...

I also like the second, but either one would work well, I think.

What do all these UK English words mean in US English?

Aubergine - ?
Bonnet - A type of hat
Caravan - Hmm..sort of like a mobile home? Like this:

Daddy-long-legs -Type of spider
Engaged - As in, engaged to be married? Planning to be married
Flat - Adj., as in, flat [even] land or flat tire.
Garden - A place in your yard where you would grow flowers or vegetables
Holiday - A day with national/worldwide significance, like Christmas or Halloween.
Intern - "someone who works in a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training...similar to apprenticeship."
Jab - A strong poke, like "She jabbed me in the arm."
Knickers - Pants, but I don't think it's very commonly used.
Lift - The verb form just means "to pick up." A lift is something that would be used to lift/pick things up.
Mackintosh - ?
Nick - Mostly just used as a boy's name
Overall - Hmm...could be used like your overall impression of something; the general idea. I'm not quite sure how to explain it.
Plimsol - ?
Quid - ?
Rubber - The material car tires or athletic shoe bottoms are made of
Shattered - Broken
Tap - Faucet, like a water tap
Underground - Just...the area under the ground.
Vest - A type of sleeveless jacket, sort of. Like this:

Zebra crossing - I don't think it's used much in American English but isn't it a walkway? The kind you used to cross the street?
