I was just reading a bunch of threads that referenced the Navigators, and that got me to thinking about DCL printing Navigators on board. Do they have CM's whose sole job is printing? Are there printing presses on the ship, and if so, where do you think they are? They can't all be done in advance, since they have Navigators for the revised ports (like the Hurricane affected ones).

Does anyone know the answer to this? Does anyone care???

I don't know the answer but I'll ask DD tomorrow.

My GUESS is it's all done on a computer and a high quality laser printer with a folding attachment.

I'll find out since you're interested.

They definitely print them up right there on the ship. Our cruise got extended to 10 nights because of Hurricane Frances and each day we got brand new Navigators that looked exactly like the ones from earlier in the week. And they included changes and ports that were not previously known or predicted, so thats how I know that they were printed right there on the spot. :) They also included up to date weather info, too. On the very last day, they looked a little different, they were just white, not tan, but that's because it was only for a half-day, then later that day they printed up one for the second half of the day.

DH works for Xerox and you wouldn't believe how small and fast some of those machines are. If they had to print up 2000 navigators I bet it could be done within a matter hours.

I saw one of the travel specials where on this particular line it was the cruise directors job to do the daily paper (Navigator, Caper, etc). They spent a good part of their day doing the layout and planning for the next day.

They did note that while *most* activities are the same from cruise to cruise, they have the option of changing depending on the crowd. If they are over flowing at Bingo, then they may add more Bingo or if pool games are a big hit they may add more of those. It was neat to see that they could change if the population deemed it necessary.

I'm sure it's all done on desktop publishing software.
At work, our bottom of the line HP laser printers put out 50 ppm.
So if they have 1 printer, printing them takes 40 minutes. I suspect they are dozens of printers on board, and their computers are probably networked. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a printer on every deck, and that they just print the number needed on each deck right on that deck.

They also print mini versions of the Navigators for the CM's to keep in their pockets...we always see the Cruise Staff CM's checking their mini Navigators to see where they are to be next!!

I wish they would make those mini navigators available at guest services for us passengers. I would love a pocket size one to carry around with me.
