I took a job 6 months ago with a promise of a raise in 3 months after a review. Well here it is 6 months later and I'm finally getting the raise. The catch is they review me after Jan 30th and if they don't like job I'm doing they take it back.

I'm sitting here thinking that's not fair. I was hired to do a job and I'm met and surpassed their expectations. (I was told that) After being here just over a month they fired someone and gave me their responsibilities also. I've done it with flying colors.

Now they gave me a list of unreasonable objectives and give me till Jan 30th to meet them.

Has anyone ever heard of this. I hope I'm explaining it correctly.

yes, I have heard of it.

I'm not sure what you mean by unreasonable objectives though. Do they want you to spin Gold from straw? :confused3

That is really awful!!! I feel bad for you. Sounds like you are getting shafted.
Do you like the job? If not I'd start looking around for a new one. If you find a new job then you can approach your boss and you will then have some leverage if you know what I mean.
Best of luck to you. :)

I would talk to the person who made those promises, and ask why you didn't get the raise at 3 months. But at the end of the day, you either want to work at that company for X amount of money, or you don't. If you leave, it's their loss. Sometimes employers sense weakness and try to get away with whatever they can. If you really are a valuable employee, I doubt they would risk losing you. But if they don't care, the ball is in your court to move on if you wish.

Yes, I've heard of this. It's called having a bad employer. At the end of the day, they can promise you the moon, stars, and sun and it doesn't mean anything if you don't have it in writing. They figure by the time you notice or complain that they haven't fullfiled their end of the bargin, you'll need the job too much to quit over it. You'll have been there too long to be able to go back to your old job, and most people would rather stay in a bad position than go through the hassle and uncertainty of trying to find a new job (the devil you know is better than the one yo don't!) And if you do quit, they'll hire someone else with the same promises and do the exact same thing, so they win either way.

Sorry you're having a rough time. If you're in a possition that you could quit, you could try giving them an ultimatum, live up to their promises or you'll leave. If you're really that good, they might go for it (I'd say it's a long shot, however). Otherwise, you'll just have to suffer through. Good luck to you!!!

I really like the job and enjoy the people I work with.

I did mention the 3 month raise and was told: The person who interviewed me should not have promised that, it's not their policy.

No they don't want me to spin gold from straw, but I have to build an unreasonable customer base, that's not going to be achieved this time of the year. Especially when they're giving me nothing to start with.

The problem there is they have been very weak in an area and are giving it to me to try and figure it out. They have not been able to for over 3 years. I was handed quite a bit of their mess ups when I first was hired and cleaned it up. I'm not sure I can meet this one.

I guess maybe I'm just venting more than anything.

I worked at a job for 9 years and left for this "opportunitiy".

And even if you have it in writing you may have a hard time getting them to comply. I work in a law office and a client had a written contract, which the employer violated. Our client filed suit, obtained a judgment and we're having a heck of a time collecting the judgment. The employer has spent more in legal fees avoiding collection than he would have paid in the judgment. Go figure.

I'm not sure if looking for another job is an option for you, but that may be your only choice. Good luck!

I've been there, and I know the feeling. When you interview you can ask all the right questions, and you have to have a certain amount of faith in the answers you get. When you find out how thingf REALLY work, it's too late. Years ago, I left an employer I had been with for 8 years. Left for a company that offered me a VP-Sales position. Within TWO WEEKS I was told they hired someone else simultaneously and HE would be the VP-Sales. I was told I could still have a job- on the street in sales for less money and a step down in position from the employer I left.

I stuck it out for 2 years, and moved on. Long story short, everything worked out it the end. And I'm sure it will for you as well.

but I have to build an unreasonable customer base

ah, are you in Sales and Marketing? That can be such a tough and high stress area to work in.

Yep, gotta love the good cop / bad cop routine. One person makes all the promises and someone else plays the bad guy and breaks them all. I doubt that the two people haven't done that before.

Well, just for comparison, I did such a good job in my first year in this job that I was given a double promotion, skipping a full level. My financial reward for this promotion was a significant pay-cut (as part of an across-the-board company pay-cut). So fairness often doesn't have much of a role in compensation.

No I'm not, but they're making me take on that role.

I say making me, because I'm not sure what will happen if I refuse, it's a small company.
