Rain poncho question...

We are knee deep in packing!

Are the very thin rain coats adequate? I found some nice sturdy ones, but am wondering if I am going to regret having to lug them around. They do not fold as "micro" as the thin ones, of course.

I prefer to buy the cheap ones folded nice and bring a couple. We have used the heavy duty ones but find it hard to find a place to dry them off. Pack a few cheap ones(dollar store, two pack), throw them away when done, and bring some extra if needed! I'm starting to stock up for our trip in March, I just store them in the front zipper part of the suitcase and if the weather states it might rain I carry them in my backpack!

Me and DD8 went in September and I forgot to bring a poncho so we ended up buying the ones at WDW since it poured one day.. so from now on we will have those.. On our last trip I bought some of the thin ones at walmart for like .97 and they were adequate.. I ended up just tossing them before we came home because I didnt want to lug them back home and figured the next time Id just buy some more.. But to answer your question, the thin ones were adequate for us..

I prefer the little cheap ones. I found them at my dollar store for 2 for $1 and bought a bunch. When we went in August, we only had one for each of us, and we wore them everyday. By the 4th day they reaked of mold and had ripped.

So my advice? Go with the cheap thin ones, but buy at least 2 or 3 extra if you expect to wear them a lot.

We buy the el-cheapos, 2 for a dollar at the Buck Store. Each day I put a couple in my little backpack. If we need them or don't want to get wet on a water ride we use them and then toss them in the nearest garbage can. I hate packing around a wet rain poncho.

If you go to the fishing/camping section of wal/mart they sell really cheap flimsy ones (they feel like sandwich bag material) but they are very small. Smaller then the one's I've seen in the dollar store. We use them one time then ditch them. Trying to repack a poncho particularly a wet one is no fun.

I buy the cheapo WalMart ones. I buy one for each day, for each person. If we use it, we toss it. If you use it just to stay dry on a ride, they roll up pretty small to go back into your waist pack, or whatever you carry. They weigh nothing!

I've tried the cheap ones, thinking I would prefer them because they fold up so much smaller, but I did not like them. They were so light weight that they just blew all over the place - did not work very well keeping us dry. We went back to our WDW ones. We take a bag to put them in when they are wet and lay them out to dry when we return to the room.

yes agree with the dollar store. buy them and chuck them. we bought $10 and wore them on wet rides as well. despite getting funny looks most people wished they had worn them when they got truly soaked

We'd always use the cheapies from Walmart for one or two days and toss them. If we used them more than once, we'd fold them up tight -- think of rolling up the bag inside the cereal box you don't want to get stale. My DH just shoved them in the big outside pockets of his cargo shorts. When we got back to the room for the night we either tossed them or unfolded them to air out -- as someone else said, they get pretty musty. One nice thing was being able to toss all the extras before going home without worrying about the money spent -- instant extra room in the suitcases for souvies!

I bought the Disney ponchos one evening when we went and it was raining when we go there.... not raining when we left our house 1/2 hr before. As soon as DD put hers on it stopped to a drizzle. I never needed mine. I now keep them in the car. We have now used them to sit on at the beach on an afternoon visit in December, and we wore them at the Shamu Christmas show as we were in the splash zone. We didn't get wet!


I think I bought the MAGICAL ponchos that keep the rain/water/H20 away!!!

Never thought about buying the cheap ones that are in the tiny packs.... but then we don't typically go to the parks if rain is forcasted!

I love this board, I am always learning something new!!

My mother and I use to use the old cheap ones, until this year. The ones at Disney are much better because you really do get less wet. The thin ones seem to stick to you when they are wet on the outside.

I brought mine that I bought earlier this year. Back in October my mom tried it out and decided to spend the money. I think $8.00. If you think about it it may be better to invest in the $8.00 Disney ones because eventually with all the purchases of the $1.00 ones you will eventually be spending the same money. And you can bring the Disney ones (very easy to pack) back home and use in your home town (we have).

For drying in your hotel room just drap them over a chair. For packing just undo the snaps, place on the floor and make into a large folded square and fold from there. My mother has quickly become an expert on folding them.

My mother just mentioned something to me. How many of you out there purchase the refillable cups at the resorts, bring them back home and then bring them back again. Well this is the same thing and you truly stay dryer.

That's opening up a can of worms since according to the Disney rules you're not supposed to do that. Think I will back away slowly from this thread...
