Rain at DL - What are your tips for staying dry!

You mean at Cafe Orleans? Or at French Market?

I know they stopped at Cafe Orleans years ago, but I could've sworn I just had one at French Market in May! If not May, it was definitely my trip in December.

At the french market. They changed their menu. And Stouffers is not longer a sponser at Disneyland (they are part of the Nestle corporation, I believe.)

Someone posted a link to the new french market menu but I can't remember where it was.

I'm pretty sad. I LOVED the beef stew in the breadbowl. We had it last November. I'm not sure when they got rid of it.

last nov 20th my bday it rained i usely wouldnt care but it closed down pirate island and i wanted to go. i was a bit of a groutch but then one the pirates was walking around nos made me laugh, and now we know monday oct 6th we are going to pirate island and it will be all right

but i was so sad last year. also my son bought me a pirate jacket tryign to make me fill better its adoribule

We keep ponchos and the stroller covers at the ready while we are there. At the first hint of rain I pull everything out and we "suit up". Once it starts to sprinkle (we've thankfully never been there in a real downpour) everyone goes rushing inside or to the shops to buy their $18 ponchos freeing up all the lines for us!

Another AWESOME thing to do in the rain is head over to the GCH and eat at Storyteller's Cafe. The burning fireplaces are great when you are wet and chilled. Plus its never crowded around lunchtime. AND we got Dreamed at the turnstills last time we went.

Well, it didn't rain on the Pasadena New Year's Rose Parade for 50 years, until the year LavenderPeach decided to go! It just poured! I stayed at her house nice and dry and babysat. I will be bringing ponchos, at the very least, when we go on Jan.2. Sounds like extra plastic baggies might come in handy too. Actually, they were handy in the summer! I would love to hear more tips!

I was at Costco today and saw rain suits for under $20. They were men's sizes.

Ok- so in talking about rain, I thought of this trip that we took a couple of years ago during the 50th, in March I believe. The weather was a little chilly, but not to bad. Then......... one night, it MONSOON RAINED! I swear it was the funniest thing. We were running as fast as we could to get cover. It rained so hard that it almost hurt! At the moment, we were miserable, but 10 minutes after it was over we were all laughing hysterically. I knew it would be a trip moment we would remember forever. Luckily, (or unluckily) for my DH, he was at the hotel sick and missed the rain, but felt up to snapping a pic of the rest of us when we got back looking like drowned rats!

I'm on the far left in the orange (pregnant and holding DH1 at the time).... but notice the water around our necks were the poncho did not cover, and the water up our pant legs that also got drenched!

The white specks in the pic are the rain coming down on us!

I don't know about the purse size umbrella but I know by reading the FAA's site you can bring any hand tools that are 7 inches or shorter so I am guessing an umbrella would be ok

My question is more about rain and the parks. Do they routinely shut down any rides when it rains? Thanks!

Rained on our day trip in September '05, rained during our December trip in '07, rained in January '08. So that's half of our trips (no rain times were October '06, September '07, May '08). It mystifies me when people say the "it doesn't rain" myth. I'm starting to think it's said by so cal natives in the same way that northwesterners like to perpetuate the myth that it is never sunny...though actually those are for opposite reasons, LOL.

My stroller is HUGE and I couldn't find a rain cover. Maybe I'll look online before I go this year.

OK they are about $8. And they really stand up to use! I've used the same one on several turns on Splash and Grizzly, along with the rain we encountered in December and January.

That said, it's best to plan for that expenditure, just in case. During our very first trip (in '05) it surprised us by pouring rain just as soon as we entered the parks (I get blamed for this by my brother, as we live in the pacific NW), and buying a Disneyland Resort themed umbrella and poncho set us back around 30 bucks (umbrella was $$). It was totally unexpected, b/c we believed the blatant lies about how it never rains in so cal, and it caused fewer FUN souvenirs to be bought (though we still do use both poncho and umbrella!).

Agreed! Though some people slip on rainy surfaces wearing crocs. I haven't done so, but some do.

I recall them closing Alice in Wonderland and the Teacups when it was heavy, all-day rain. Other than that, I can't remember.

They close anything where the ride is primarily or largely outdoors during steady, heavy rain - like Alice and the Teacups, Dumbo, Autopia, Pirates Lair, a few things in DCA, and others I cannot recall, and the PhotoPass people don't come out. I remember they told us that last year when we went and were not sure if it was going to pour on us or not (and of course, it did!). It definitely puts a crimp in plans if you only have a limited time there, so I would rather the rain skip my weekend and visit DLR on the weekend of the DLR fans' trips who love it when it rains on them!! Now if Jack Frost wants to pay a visit on my weekend and blow a lot of cold air on us, that would be great!

I am a SoCal native, Bumber, and I agree with YOU - it is a myth that it never rains in SoCal. It does not rain year-round (this IS a desert state, after all), but in fact, it can get very heavy and cause many problems for residents and drivers! But because it doesn't rain as often as other states get rain, we have very dry conditions (dry+wind+heat=WILDFIRES) and we are also having a water shortage crisis again. But I would never tell people that it doesn't rain here at all, because there have been way too many times where very heavy rain has caused a lot of trouble for me or people I know in different ways (i.e., mudslides and collapsed roofs, among other things).

My poncho was $6.95 plus tax in Toontown. After I bought it, I put it on, walked outside into NO rain. LOL So after that I brought it every trip, it didn't rain on us again, not like it did that first weekend of Jan. Man, it was pouring, just buckets and buckets of rain.

lol we bought the yellow ponchs across the stree in a store at a hotle. lol
we also bought a black micky umbrella i cant find it now..its some where lol but the small purple one ill put in the suit case

It rained last Super Bowel Sunday and it was BUSY!!! This is how we staied dry. The stroller cover was nice too at night when it got windy.

My DH and I were there last Super Bowl Sunday, too! It was our first experience in the rain. I was concerned at first, but the park (while not remotely empty) had the shortest lines I've ever seen.

I used a poncho and umbrella, though next time I would bring a more compact umbrella. I also wore capris and flip flops, because I hate soggy tennis shoes/socks. My feet were cold, but all the walking around kept me from thinking about it. I think that if it were a lot colder/windier, it would have been much worse. More than the rain, I was upset they cancelled the fireworks. It hadn't rained in hours, and I thought it was only slightly windy, and they didn't make a decision till right before they should have started. We had staked out a bench for 30 minutes, which I was really proud of. We still have seen the fireworks from in front of the castle.

Bumbershoot I think that the rain in Sept of 05 was a crazy fluke or you brought it with you but Dec. and Jan. are rainy season for CA...actually Dec. - Mar. so those 2 dont count...
