Race reports

Woo hoo! Congrats to one and all!
And to Disney as well for pulling over an excellent event for such a huge number of people with a minimum of issues (in my opinion!)

It was an Awesome Event! My first Marathon, and I am, frankly, just so proud of myself! (It was the Dopey for me, I missed 5k, but did the other 3 and got the 5 medals.... will do 5k tomorrow for myself)

A friend was running for a charity, and we stuck together for the entire Half and most of the Full:
I lost him at the overpass before DHS (don't like bridges, but can manage at a fast run & looking down! Generally I don't do the run & weave thing, but bridges I do! Sorry if I cut in front of any of you!)

Don't have any complaints other then minor aches & soreness!
Had my recovery lunch with in the cold bath that waited for me at the resort, and then an Epson salt bath after.

Just rubbed my legs with Voltaren, and thinking of heading to Downtown Disney.(although, I notice Spice Road open at EPCOT!!)

I'm on my own, as friend who I ran with is with his crowd for the evening.
Any DisMeetups this evening? Think I'd like that.

I was happy to see the W.I.S.H team!! :hippie:
:woohoo:
I felt like I had someone to look for to be cheering for me!

Missed you at beginning at ESPN, but saw you later! Thanks for the cold cloth- awesome! And the licorice as well!:yay:

I stuck with only my own fuel until after AK, but from that point on, I was taking food from total strangers--please don't let my mom know! --chocolate kisses, twizzlers, pretzel rods (oops! Got that just after entering ESPN players field: the announcer said did I just see a lady with a cigar out on the track???)

First off I want to thank everyone (coach et al) that assured me that I could still get in a sub 2 hr time coming from the back in the half. I can attest that it can actually be done as I posted a 1 hr 43 min (plus a few seconds) time coming from "near" the start of corral P :) Although I would say that I ran more than 60% of the race on the grass which was a bit difficult at times as it tended to slope more the further off the road you got, especially where the course narrowed a bit. I also did run into a few fire ant hills early on in the dark that us FL residents know all too much about, but luckily no bites that I can see. According to my run app I ended up doing 13.5 miles due to zigzagging in and around the crowds ;)

With that said the route was pretty much jammed even with the added corrals. I really slowed down to a crawl through the Magic Kingdom, especially near the castle (expected), as I ran into numerous folks taking photos and of course ran into the corrals that went off before me. I was able to make up for some lost time after the Grand Floridian on the main road. All in all, I would estimate I lost about 8-10 minutes coming from the back, but it is doable and most importantly I had a fabulous time. For me the weather was ideal as well since my lungs tend to like a tad bit of humidity :cool1:

Congrats everyone!

Just wondering if anyone could give me a rundown on which characters were at which race?

I've only ever done the TOT 10 miler and am thinking of expanding, but to be honest, I'll probably pick the race based on which characters are out.

Serious congratulations to all the Dopey people!!!! You guys rock my socks and are so amazing!

I had a great experience this weekend! The marathon yesterday was definitely hard, but no more than I expected. The course was crowded in a few areas so much that we had to walk, most notably the sections right before, during, and after the water stop as we were leaving Animal kingdom. For the most part, though, we were able to make our way past people when we wanted to run, and move out of the way when we wanted to walk. For reference, we started about a third of the way back in corral L.

The stretch from AK to WWoS was definitely the hardest for me, with it's long boring freeway and bright sun. I just kept telling myself, "it could be hotter. This isn't so bad." Until I believed it. I'm surprised they didn't have any characters out at WWoS. Is that because the course is narrower and there isn't as much room for a photo line? It seems like it would have been the perfect place for that football Goofy, or any other sports-themed characters they had. I agree that those winding paths through feel like they take forever, and you keep thinking the next turn will be the last, and then it's not. The run from there to Hollywood Studios was also rough, but at least there you can pump yourself up with the fact that the race is almost over, and there are 2 parks and the boardwalk left!

I love that they had photographers right I'm front of the castle, as that was one photo I really wanted. And we hit Animal Kingdom at the perfect time to ride Expedition Everest! We ran right up, and they directed all the runners through the fastpass line. We ended up with a train full of runners that were all cheering and so excited! It only took about 5 minutes!

When we hit Hollywood Studios, I unplugged my headphones so I could experience the crowds and the parks those last 3 miles. There were so many people watching and cheering, some even reading our names off our bibs and cheering for us specifically. It was so much appreciated!!

My parents were waiting for us at the bridge on the boardwalk right before we head into Epcot, and it was do great to see them for some last minute encouragement and hugs! Then it was just a quick trip through the World Showcase, where we stopped for a few character photos, since the lines were so short, and we were done!

There was a bus waiting when I got to our stop, and it left a few minutes after I got on. We didn't experience any traffic issues, but we also only had to make it to the Epcot resort loop.

All in all, it was a great day! I was actually cold in the corral in the morning, and the weather was so much better than I expected, even if it was still too sunny for my personal preferences. :) I didn't set a PR, but with all the stops for photos we made, riding Everest, and having run the three prior days, I am happy.

PS. It's unlikely I'll be doing Dopey again. :) That's mostly because I can't afford a WDW trip every year, though, and I'd still like to eventually like to do all the different WDW races, so it's not exactly a reflection on the race itself.

Finished my one and only Dopey, or at least that’s the story today. I was more than pleasantly pleased with the crowding at the start. The half was felt more crowded as multi-race runners are corralled based on the marathon pace not the half. That put me in a corral that had a nominal pace a little slower than I run.

My race went well but around mile 5 I started to really feel ill. I am not sure what was happening but I spent about 5 miles trying to decide whether I was pulling out or pushing on. I seem to have found my mojo as the tuba runner passed and I paced about his speed for the next 15 miles. He was a hoot as he would stop in the parks and play Disney songs and at most of the high school bands he would stop and play along with the band…usually out powering their tubas. I passed Expedition Everest at 9:02 so I hopped the fast pass line for a rise to the big hill. It was strange as the Cast Members seemed to be pushing the detour.

As we left the WWoS I did the mental math as realized that I could finish walking about a 25 minute pace so I took it easy for the remainder of the race. Also, with the lower than normal training level for this race mile 20 (if not earlier) was the point where I knew I would need to pull out the mental game tool box out. I stopped a few times to talk with fellow runners who were not feeling so well.

All in all I thought the race was a great even once again. If there is any criticism from me it is that I think the on course entertainment was less this year. Not much but it was just enough to be noticeable. There was still enough out there that I never felt like I needed the boost. The other is that I think it’s time to runDisney to seed multi-race runners by race and do away with the multi-use bibs. It’s nice only having one race number to remember but I think putting faster runners in the same corral as slower runners creates multiple issues. Absent those two minor criticisms I think the race went well. I cannot even begin to imagine the logistics of putting on 4 races of 17000+ runners in 4 days.

Congrats to everyone out there.

I came down to scream team, but unexpectedly used a half bib of a WISHer who was injured. As it happened, my training for Princess had 13 on the schedule, so it worked out. I started the race in Corral K. This was a new experience for me, since I started last year's Goofy in A. I went to the front of the corral, as I wanted to try and run my planned 9 mpm training pace. I looked back while waiting and saw a male WISHer, but was too far away to communicate.

The wait to start wasn't as bad as I expected, although I didn't see a start line clock. Was there one? I really needed it since I left my Garmin in the car. And as for the car---I loved being able to drive to the race. I stayed offsite, so it was the only option, but it was so much faster and nicer than the bus, especially for leaving.

The race was a little tricky. I call it the "Disney Cross Country 1/2" since I spent most of the time dodging and weaving on the grass or the pavement edge. This was not as bad as I feared, but was mentally tiring. And the weather was rather brutal. Even though I was nominally running a training pace, it felt like I was flat out racing. I was dripping beyond belief.

I stopped briefly in MK to hug a few WISHers and eat a gel, and then again outside Epcot. I also had a potty break at Mile 11--I think the corral K start meant my usual pre-race routine didn't work!

Finished just under 2 hours, and immediately left to go back to the hotel. Having the car was a godsend. I don't know what I would have done otherwise.

Finally, to those WISHers who ran on Sunday......we ran into problems with Disney re: our handing out food and washcloths. We were stopped from doing the oranges at WWoS and so some of us left to go over to the Boardwalk area to try and do it there. We ended up outside YC. We were then stopped from handing out anything there--not even washcloths. Sorry if we missed you. I believe the group at DHS was unaffected, but some other WISHers around BC were told to stop as well.

Thanks for posting your race reports, everyone! I was refreshing this thread like crazy all weekend! :) Congratulations to all!

That's sad that they were told to stop but I think I also understand the reasoning. They prevented the Hash Hound Harriers from passing out red cups along the course a few years back. I am guessing in Disney's eye there is a liability with groups setting up and passing out things along the course. Not sure that I agree with the otic but then I am not the Disney Legal Eagles either.

Thanks for coming out and maybe next year they will forget the ban.

We survived three volunteer shifts over marathon weekend. For the 10k, we were at water stop 2 in EPCOT China. I gave an awkward fist bump to Coach Charles. (It was too close to Health Department Glove Talk and was going for a shoulder bump or something, the Disney paranoia and micromanaging has really removed the humanity.) Still being upright was a challenge; we were running on two hours sleep. Our volunteer group was awesome. We had tables stacked three high in no time. It didn't hurt that our team leader was a water stop veteran.

After securing our half and full credentials, at the expo, we spent Friday sleeping and doing the Rt 192-souvenir-thing. I managed to glean some wisdom from the 99-cent-buttons, “ Always give 100%, unless you are donating blood.” My wife purchased and wore a button that says, “ I married a fart joke.” We just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. Most would call it the Silver Anniversary but we are calling it the Plywood Anniversary. We really needed the Rt 192 experience to cleanse our souls of the general disarray.

Saturday, roadblock-security prevented our volunteer bus from entering our finish line chute - work area. Eventually the driver figured it out, after parking in the Port Orleans Resort for about 20 minutes. We were placed just before the medals, after the finish line. The wheeled participants had already finished as had a few of the elite athletes. You know there is going to be chaos if your volunteer instructions say, “Arrive early, parking is limited.” Huh? Is logic taught any more? OK, I arrive early, as does everyone else. There still isn't enough parking. I am not going to bend space-time by arriving early.

Sunday was equally chaotic at volunteer parking. Cars were parked in the grass, on the side of the road. We got the DMV-Warden as team leader; they all have nicknames. I don't think she has left a golf cart or pavement in her life. Well maybe to sit at a window at the DMV telling people that they have to go to the end of line because the didn't pick up a number. One of the duties we take on as volunteers at these races is to act as a shock absorber between the volunteer team leaders and race participants. Now I know why the volunteer commandments include; thou shalt not use profanity and thou shall not verbally abuse team leaders. The commandments also include refraining from sexual activity. Yes, exactly, if you are likely to become overwhelmed with the desire to engage in sexual activity, while on a marathon volunteer shift, please don't reproduce!

P.S. Who's the mental giant that thought it was a good idea to leave a Backlot Tram in the tightest blind corner of the course? FYI, a wet, sharp corner and course narrowing don't go together.

I rant, therefore I am. While you're at it, pull my finger.

Wohoo! I did it! I'm a marathoner! Lining up in the corral (freezing my butt off!) I was panicking. I hadn't run due to injury in 2 1/2 weeks so I had no idea if I would even make it mile 1. Turns out, I didn't have much leg pain AT ALL and the only pain was a major blister during miles 19 & 20. I never really hit a wall either--not sure if it was because I wasn't pushing too hard or because I had my "wall" all week and morning long stressing about if I was going to finish.

I also never really got bored. I think because I am used to running this boring stretch alone by where I live. So even on the long stretches during the race, I loved watching the other runners.

In the end, even with stopping twice to mess with the blister (putting on tight compression socks back on sweaty legs takes FOREVER) and stopping for almost 50 pictures (I'm not in most of them), I was only off my pre-injury goal of 7 minutes!!

I loved the race. Yes it was hard. Yes by the end I was so ready to be done. But it wasn't as bad as I was prepared for it to be! Will I do another marathon? Only if it's Disney! I need that entertainment to keep me going. And I've learned that I don't think I'll ever do Goofy or Dopey. I don't think my body would handle that much training without injuries.

Yeppers, I realized I was messing up when I felt the glove on your hand. Never really understood the need for a glove on water station folk's hands when there are so many other sanitation issues at the tables including the pouring of water from a bottle into my bottle while the two bottles touch, my hands are used as a funnel of the volunteer has their hands in their pocket. I don't know but it seems like a lot of overkill.

Anyway, thanks for volunteering. That is truly a thankless job and one that would make the race impossible to run if it were not for volunteers.

Nice to see you once again. Maybe see you again at PHM...

What amazed me is how my quads started cramping up at the same exact place as last year, right before coming into WWoS.I dealt with it as it happened about 4 more times before the race ended, they would cramp up,I would walk and take a GU and water then it would go away and I would run again.Aside from that last year I avoided chafing issues throughout the race to then get some on the bus ride back to the hotel, this year I reapplied like 4 times and had zero issues.I used some KT tape on my knees since after ToT in October I started getting some pain in my left knee and I can certainly say it worked, however for some reason even though there's no pain in my knees everything from my quads to the muscle behind my knee is pretty seriously stiff, sitting down and then getting up as well as stairs are adventures right now, once I start walking I go a little slower than normal but it doesn't feel too bad.I remember being stiff last year but this year seems worse,as long as it goes away by Wednesday I'll be OK since that's when I felt back to normal last year.Luckily I had no flare up of my hamstring which I pulled in November.I beat my time from last year by 37 minutes,PR for me so I'm happy. Also met the women's winner at the Vineland outlets today.I'm still thinking of going Goofy in 2015.

I run for the characters too! Note that the characters do step away on breaks, so no one will likely see all the characters.

Before the race:
*Mary Poppins, Bert, and a Penguin were inside the retreat
*Sarge (the talking green army man) was outside by the gear check

Corrections/Additions to the above list:
*The pirates are Jack Sparrow and Barbossa from the PotC movies
*The Alligator is Louis from Princess and the Frog
*Santa's Reindeer
*Lilo & Stitch (both were there)
*Golfing Donald switched off with Golfing Goofy (so you saw one or the other)
*Dr. Facilier is the villain from Princess and the Frog
*Peter Pan and Wendy switched off with Captain Hook and Mr. Smee
*Dogs: Dug (from Up), Bolt, and Pluto
*Jiminy Cricket
*I think the Animal Kingdom guys were from the Festival of the Lion King rather than the Jammin' Jungle parade
*Phineas and Ferb
*Sarge the Green Army Man
*Dopey (entering Epcot)
*When I saw Belle she only had a photopass photographer so I wouldn't include her on the list unless I missed it
*Mulan had both photopass and marathonfoto photographers so I'd include her as a "marathon character"
*Duffy (he had both photopass and marathonfoto)
*Running Minnie (at finish line in sweat suit)
*Running Mickey (at finish line in sweat suit)

After the race by the stage:
*Chip and Dale
*Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar
*Pluto

It was a good number of characters, but there were more last year and most of these are available to see in other places. The shorter races seem to have had a better selection... maybe I need to try Dopey next time!

I was speaking with a Photopass photographer I have come to know in Epcot yesterday and I do believe that I would call the above 'race characters' as Disney did send out Photopass folks to some of the characters. He worked three of the fours races over the weekend as well as the post race party Sunday night. It makes me wonder if they are looking at possibly trying to take over the duties.... We both concluded that is not the case as there were well over 200 photographers on course and that would take a chuck of folks away from the guests.

I second the fact that it depends on timing of who or if you see someone. As I ran by, Golfing Mickey was out and I stopped for a photo op with Donald and Minnie in Dinoland. I had to stop to let Minnie know that a 'friend of Minnie's' dad said Hi. She was pleased.

Glad you made it. I was wondering about your race

What an excellent race weekend, congrats to all those participants, volunteers, and the crew putting on everything. Excellent job as always.

Did the marathon and stepped out from the YC a bit after 3:30 and right onto a bus which quickly left to one more stop to fill up before heading to the start. It was a bit cool for me to wait around but could see how others would think it was down right balmy given the state of weather in the past weeks leading up to the race. The clouds cleared at just the right time to start to lower the temps and humidity as the race was nearing starting.

I started in "D" and was feeling the humidity the first couple of miles, sweating quite a bit from it. But it must have dropped from there because by the time arrived at MK it was not an issue any more.

Knew after the first couple of miles that was not feeling the ease of running that I should be that early in the race. But that was par for the course with this training cycle. 9 minute positive split but still ended with a 20 min PR. Amazing how late in the race one starts to question their sanity for doing something yet few hours later already planning the next event.

Not too many issues at all....
Maybe about being passed by too many men wearing running skirts:confused3
As I got to the bus to return to the resort and the first step up on the bus being 3 times higher than a normal step. I just stood there and looked at it, and wondered what I was going to do since my legs could not do it. I eventually prevailed. :thumbsup2

Congratulations everyone. It seems like most people made it through the Dopey successfully. I am not really interested in the Goofy or Dopey but like the addition of the 10k. I'd probably do the 10k and half if I were to go down next year and then volunteer for the full on Sunday.
