Race reports

What an excellent race weekend, congrats to all those participants, volunteers, and the crew putting on everything. Excellent job as always.

Did the marathon and stepped out from the YC a bit after 3:30 and right onto a bus which quickly left to one more stop to fill up before heading to the start. It was a bit cool for me to wait around but could see how others would think it was down right balmy given the state of weather in the past weeks leading up to the race. The clouds cleared at just the right time to start to lower the temps and humidity as the race was nearing starting.

I started in "D" and was feeling the humidity the first couple of miles, sweating quite a bit from it. But it must have dropped from there because by the time arrived at MK it was not an issue any more.

Knew after the first couple of miles that was not feeling the ease of running that I should be that early in the race. But that was par for the course with this training cycle. 9 minute positive split but still ended with a 20 min PR. Amazing how late in the race one starts to question their sanity for doing something yet few hours later already planning the next event.

Not too many issues at all....
Maybe about being passed by too many men wearing running skirts:confused3
As I got to the bus to return to the resort and the first step up on the bus being 3 times higher than a normal step. I just stood there and looked at it, and wondered what I was going to do since my legs could not do it. I eventually prevailed. :thumbsup2

Ya know, I have watched many a strong willed runner pause at that step. Try turning backwards and stepping down. That way you can fail onto a support.

It was just as hard as I imagined it would be, but I finished!

The crowds definitely stressed me out but I was lucky to have fallen in with a 6 hour Pacebook group and they pulled me through the whole race. I dropped all of my clif blocks within the first two miles what kept me going was knowing that the scream team said they would have food to hand out. I passed a couple of scream teamers who it looked like they had some food with them but they weren't handing it out so I was a little confused but I saw later that they were told not to do that :( There was no official food until after mile 11 where I got a banana. I did get pretzels from the volunteers, maybe around Animal Kingdom? Thank you so much for that!

I was dressed as Pocahontas and it was great hearing people yell GO Pocahontas. My Garmin data said I did 27.1 miles from all of that weaving. It was a hard race, and I don't know if I would do another marathon. On the other hand, I know I could have finished faster with fewer people so I'll never say never.

There was a Merida running the 5k and I swear she was a guy. :). Only question I had is "how can you run in a wig?"

That first step up is so hard. Even after the half. Elevator please. :)

I've run in a wig before during the half at WDW and DL. It gets pretty hot & sweaty, that's true. You end up running faster than expected too, because no one wants to get beat by the guy with the blue hair.

My husband and I did the half. It was humid, hot, and gross! :lmao: I'm from a state that anything over 20% humidity is horrible, hehe.

The first 5k I was feeling amazing, running at a blazing speed (haha) of around 10:30 min/mile. I got tangled in someone's feet right after the castle and fell, but got back up and ignored the skinned knee and hands. By the 10k I had slowed to an 11:00 min/mile but still felt good. I sped up some for a few more miles and then I came up to a group that had linked arms and were walking. They wouldn't let anyone pass and when I said "excuse me, please," I was told I needed to be a little more magical. After walking behind them for a few minutes, a guy finally just broke through them and I started to get a rhythm back.

By the 15k it looked as if I was going get my goal time and break my PR by about 15 minutes. I was so excited! Then came the next water stop. From that point on it was a struggle to keep PowerAde and water down. The humidity had gotten to me. I had goose bumps and was very cold. I finished the last 3 miles running a bit, walking more and trying to not cry. When I did run I kept the 10:30-11:00 pace, but I could only manage that for a few minutes at a time. I ended up getting a PR, but only by a minute so I was quite disappointed.

After the race it took a while before I could eat anything. I'm not a PowerAde fan, so I had brought Gatorade from home and drank two bottles plus the two bottles of water I got at the finish line. I knew I was dehydrated when it still took a few hours to have to use potty even after drinking all of that.

Despite the disappointment of not getting my goal time, I had a blast and want to run the race again. Unfortunately it will be a few years before I can do it, but any Disney race is now on my radar. :)

Congratulations on finishing the marathon! I've encountered that first step onto the bus back to the resort in the past and specifically chose the Polynesian Hotel to avoid that step. I took the Epcot monorail back to the TTC and then walked (ok hobbled) to the Poly from there. There are no stairs at all, just some interesting looks from fellow guests in the monorail car.

Congrats to everyone that ran!

So I'm a bit confused about this group you came upon - were they really that inconsiderate? I don't understand how people can be so deliberate in blocking others, particularly since so many of the runners have commented on parts of the course being narrow. I would have been fuming! I'm not much of a runner and the PHM will be my first ever half. What's the protocol when coming across something like this?

You will encounter entitled people at this race, doing selfish stuff. "Excuse me," is about all you can say.

Agreed. Though when I nearly got smacked in the face by the dancing, cutting forward through spaces I wasn't choosing to move through, lady in the Brasil Runner shirt, i believe I said "gah! Ack! Hey!" But I assume her music was too loud to hear me.

I liked the family of three during the half that walked in such a way that made them hard to deal with, and then when it was time for them to run they went single file and went aggressively through groups that were exactly like them while walking. Sigh.

Loved your report! I have been meaning to pop in here and tell you congrats on your Dopey weekend. I know how hard you trained. I know we haven't connected on any of these boards because we haven't had common rD races, but I have seen your posts and admire your training commitment. So happy you had a good weekend! I too, wasn't born a runner, but have become one against the odds.

thank you RunDisney
thank you Jeff Galloway
and thank you DISboards runner friends!

Here's my race report. First of all, I should explain that I am a very competitive person (with myself). I don't care if I win or lose, but I'm always trying to improve or reach a goal. With that being said:

5k - I had a blast! I started in Corral A and when we took off, I knew I had to go slow because I still had 45.5 miles to go after this race. I really enjoyed the course. I actually got choked up when I first ran into Epcot because I was thinking to myself...holy cow, I am really doing this! I was doing really well until I saw Dopey. I had to stop! I didn't know if I'd get another chance later. I did stop, I waited 5 minutes, got my picture with Dopey, and then off I went. The funny thing is that my time was my slowest 5k and I didn't care. Am I changed person because of this race? Yes! In more ways than one! I also got a picture with Mickey after the race

10k - I had a blast! Once again in Corral A and off we went. I have to be honest. I wasn't real fond of the beginning of the course, but the 2nd half was great! I didn't stop for any pictures this time on the course, but I still enjoyed every moment of it. High fiving volunteers and spectators, telling everyone thanks for coming out. I finished in a very respectable time and didn't over exert myself.

Half Marathon - I had a blast! This was actually the race I was looking forward to. My wife and I were going this one together. She is much slower than me and she's been fighting an IT Band issue for several months now. Originally she was going to do a 3:1 run/walk. Unfortunately due to her injury and minimal training towards the end, we decided on a 30 second/ 1 minute run/walk ratio. (As a side note, we purchased a knee brace at the expo that seemed to help her out a lot as it kept her knee from turning in). Off we go! We kept to the plan and were knocking those miles out 1 at a time. I wasn't sure how far she'd get with the run walk ratio as our last training run together she got to 8 miles and had to walk the remaining way back to the car and cut the run short by a mile or 2. Next thing you know, we're at mile 8 and she told me she was feeling good. I told her any running past here are bonus miles. The entire time she was worried about getting passed by the balloon ladies. When we crossed over that bridge before getting to mile 10, I told her to look back towards Magic Kingdom and she asked, do we have to go there? I said no, that's all the people behind you and she instantly relaxed! Once we got past mile 11, she knew she was going to finish. She actually ran the last .25 miles and then as we approached the finish line, I told her to make sure she high 5's Mickey and she did and then I did and then she crossed the finish line ahead of me!:confused3 I was beaten by my wife in the half marathon by 1 second. Guess what...I didn't care because I was so proud of her! She wore her medal around her neck for 3 days because she earned it!

Marathon - I had a blast! This was my first marathon and I was really trying to get a sub 4 hour time. I wasn't sure if this was possible for me after just running three days in a row prior. I was supposed to start in Corral D, but the 4 hour pace group was in F, so I moved back. I started to get really nervous because I kept thinking should I try for the sub 4 or just go out and have fun. OK, my comptetiveness kicked in and I started with the pace group. For me, the miles started to fly by. I couldn't believe we were through the first 5 miles and heading into MK already. I loved MK as I did last year for the half. We continued on and were keeping a really steady pace. I felt good coming out of the speedway and then heading towards AK. I wasn't fond of that road, but at least it was something different. We entered AK and I ran through there and then off to WWoS. Got through there and grabbed my soaking wet towel at mile 17ish. Thanks to this board's advice, I held onto that towel until World Showcase. I did have one panic moment during mile 22. I got a cramp in my hamstring and I had to stop and stretch for about 10 seconds. I started going again, increasing my cadence, ate some high sodium shot blocks, and rubbed a handful of biofreeze on my hammy. I was able to catch up to the pace group in a short time and continued on to Hollywood Studios. At this point, I knew I may actually be able to finish with a sub 4. I kept hearing Coach's voice "HS, Y&B Club, World Showcase, then finish" I kept telling myself that and it got me through it. I got to the World Showcase and my legs were killing me, but nothing was going to stop me now. The pace leader was behind me at this point and I also took Coach's advice again. I said just get to Mexico, then as I passed Mexico, I said get to the fountain and I did. Then get to Spaceship Earth...and then get to the choir! As I passed the choir, I knew the finish line was just around the corner. It was the best feeling in the world to know the finish line was just ahead and people were screaming for you to finish the race. I ran through the finish line and I finished in 3:58:18.:cool1:.

I was so happy that I had accomplished such a difficult goal of not only completing my first marathon, but running 3 races before it and running the marathon in less than 4 hours. I'm not sure about others, but I feel that I can accomplish pretty much anything now that I put my mind to. Talk about a confidence boost! This was a magical day! I told my wife, if we do this again, next time I am running a 6 hour race (I don't care about time now) and that I am going to take hundreds of pictures on the course and have even more fun than I did this time.

With all that being said, thanks to everyone here for all of your advice along the way and thanks to coach for helping me get through the marathon. You many not have been physically beside me, but believe me, you were right there with me at the end!

Congrats to everyone that ran!

You will encounter entitled people at this race, doing selfish stuff. "Excuse me," is about all you can say.

The proper way is an excuse me and the group moves to the side allowing you through. For some it takes an excuse me, a few seconds pause then a forceful excuse me as you tap a shoulder and move into the personal space. Folks tend to move away from a personal space violator. I had this happen in a combined race of differing distances where I was attempting a PR in the longer race. A group in the shorter race decided it would be cute to link arms and skip the last 40 yards to the line. I wanted the record so I kind of tapped and pushed through. They were not happy as about 8 runners came through with me.

I chalk it up more to inexperience than anything else but then anymore there may also be malice.
