Here is my question to you: Does anyone have any idea WHAT this back thing is? Here are the symptoms: Every night (EVERY NIGHT) after just a few hours of sleep, I wake up (doesn't matter what position) in severe low back/right side of pelvis PAIN. So much that I can't move by myself. I usually flip an arm over onto my husband and ask him to help me move as I groan and yell. I have tried pillows, right side, left side, back... it doesn't matter. I wake up in pain at least 5 times or more each night and then roll out of bed between 5 and 6am just to get rid of the pain. It goes away almost immediately upon moving.

I've tried 3 aleve (660mg) AND 1000mg of Tylenol PM together! I slept too hard and woke up screaming! Also got a cramp in my foot that went up the top of my foot (which is weird). The Aleve seems to help my neck and wrists/thumbs, but not my back pain at night.

I am so sick of waking up in pain every single night. I am starting to hate going to sleep just knowing it will be painful in a few hours.

Does anyone know WHAT this could be? If I could take a marker and circle the area of pain, it would be just on the right side of my lower back, and it gets so bad I can barely move my right leg to get rid of it! It definitely isn't equal on both sides, more on the right side of my spine.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm running out of OTC drugs (and already ate through the Naproxen). If they worked, I wouldn't mind. :sad1:

My guess, and only guess mind you, would be either a herniated disc or Ciatica (sp?). Have you been to an orthopedist? Or any doctor for it?

Fibro wouldn't be so localized and not just at night so I don't think it's that. RA would have other symptoms that are just as severe that would have worried you long before the pain. I'm with disneynutt thinking it's something with your back.

this wouldnt affect your foot ( unless that could be an isolated instance) but have you considered Kidney Stones?
When I had one a few years ago it hurt really bad in my back. It was worse at night too.

Just a thought.

DO you have pain at all during the day?

I dont think it sounds like Fibro. My fibro is centralized but its not a night only kind of thing. My pressure points are in my chest and it makes it hard to bretahe sometimes :(.

I hope you can find some relief really soon!

I have been to a rhuemy for other symtoms since the time this started (last May). They include aching knees, wrists, neck, thumb joints and ankles. Was tested multiple times, ANA was initially positive, then negative, RA factor was negative too. Xrays are clear. That's why the first rheumy settled on Fibro but I just don't believe it as I have no tender points, or other symptoms of fibro.

So, if you include the back at night, I have constant neck pain (can't turn it or look up or down), wrist pain (both, more in left), thumb joint pain, knee pain (both knees) and ankle pain. I'm a happy rainbow most days :rotfl: (not really, more like this: :headache: ).

So now you have the full story... any ideas?

Yes, the pain in the back goes completely away during the day. Nothing, nada, zip. ONLY when I sleep (or try to at least).

You need to go back to your Rheumatologist for further evaluation. There are a lot of Autoimmune disorders that mimic RA that he should look into. DW MeanLaureen has a rare Autoimmune disease (AOSD) that causes her to be in pain 24/7 as well as have fever spikes on a daily basis. Do you ever get unexplained fevers? Also other signs of her disease are rashes on the face or chest that develop suddenly and sore throats that linger. Anything like this happening with you? If so, have him look into Stills Disease

I agree with Obi. As I've said before, you need to get to the bottom of all this and GET TREATMENT. I know it's frustrating, but I went to 4 doctors before I found one to help.

Forgot to add that I get similar pain (sacroiliac joints) while sleeping...it's from my psoriatic arthritis/connective tissue disease.

I think you may have herniated a disc.I went through this back in September, almost the same exact symptoms--couldn't move, pain down my leg into my foot, couldn't roll over in bed, coudln't sit for any length of time. I spent 1 month out of work and 2 months in physical therapy to get back in shape, but I'm doing great now. As bad as it hurt then(and it was pretty severe) it doesn't hurt at all now. Time to see a back doctor.
