QVC is still a thing?

After my mother died I found about two dozen unopened packages from QVC/HSN in her closet and drawers. Some costume jewelry, clothing, cosmetics, and a few other trinkets.

She DID use/wear most of what she bought and I know she loved watching the cooking segments.

IT SLICES, IT DICES, IT CHOPS, IT FILES, IT EVEN WASHES THE DISHES FOR YOU!!!! All for 4 EZ payments of $16.42. BUT WAIT!!! THERE'S MORE!!!! For a limited time buyers of this can also purchase this. THROW AWAY YOUR STOVE, YOUR FRIDGE, YOUR CROCKPOT, YOUR DISHWASHER, HECK, THROW AWAY YOUR SPOUSE TOO. THIS ONE DOES IT ALL. All for 5 EZ payments of 32.45.

I had a babysitter who'd watch QVC in between her soaps. A friends' mom was an overnight nurse, so this would be on to help her fall asleep if after the drive home she was still wide awake. But this was 30 years ago.

I have no need or desire to watch any of the shopping networks and wish that we could opt out of them. Instead, I just skip. I do look at friends with a side eye when I see a QVC box at their house. Often it's a gift from an older relative.

In the Kitchen with David

/thread

I must admit, I am a closet In The Kitchen with David fan. Only in the past year or so...I think we were home at the start of lockdown and nothing was on and for some reason it appealed to me!
In my defense, I've only bought one thing all year - just some candles around the holidays!

I still watch QVC from time to time. I've purchased a few laptops over the years from QVC. They are able to include add-ons you do not necessarily get for the same price when purchased elsewhere. They've included printers, software, anti-virus protection, dedicated customer service, for example. I've also bought some kitchen and household items. I usually know my prices and will buy elsewhere if it's too high.

I have a bill I still have write a check for every month...AND one of my banks has had their bank to bank transfer system down so I either have to drive 45 minutes to withdraw $$ from that bank, or write a check from that bank and deposit it into the one I need it in. Luckily I can still write the check and save myself the 90 minute r/t drive!
So yeah, maybe checks are not that common nowadays, but just because some folks don't use them doesn't mean others don't have a need or use for them on occasion.

No time traveling here. (insert "well I'm not time traveling anywhere because we are observing all of the Covid regulations and I can't believe anyone would even discuss travel at the moment" conversations here)

It is! I only know because my 20-something niece bought me a gift from there. I made me laugh thinking of her sitting around watching QVC which seems not like something a 20-something would do. Turns out one of the influencers she follows recommended the product. That made much more sense.

When I was growing up, I remember my mom staying up to watch QVC and see what "Today's Special Value" was going to be. I don't remember her ever buying anything from them, and I don't think she really watches QVC anymore.

I confess, I like to watch the food programs and figure out the price per pound of their salmon/pot stickers/steaks. They seem to be popular, but I can't figure out who would need to buy them. Everywhere I've lived, I had a good butcher in the area--even rural. Now that we live coastal, we have a great seafood source, too, but even when we were a few hours from the ocean, we could get good seafood.

A lot of their stuff is sheer marketing hype--you can only get this color vacuum here! It's exclusive to us! Okay, but does anyone really care what color their vacuum is?

I do watch every so often when channel flipping and usually laugh at the overly excited sales pitch people. They act like they have never had candy/cookies or whatever they are pitching. Have never purchased any of their overpriced items. I have never understood the need to have any type of perishable food shipped to you from any online source. Clearly, you are paying extra for the expedited shipping and insulated cooler used to ship it. Unless you live somewhere that doesn't have grocery stores, I have no idea why people would buy that sort of item online.

I often wonder if they actually sell the quantities shown or if that is just part of their marketing ploy to make it sound like you are missing out on their fabulous deal?

I hate when DH travels. I have anxiety and overnight is tough. It's great sleeping TV, nobody yells, no loud commercials. I've bought a few of my favorite kitchen things there for good value, and they carry some brands I favor; Vionic shoes, Temp-Tations Stoneware.

I've been watching QVC for YEARS - since graduate school, I think. I used to get up at 5 am to go to work (I worked 6 am - 9 pm those days) and watch the morning show. It was a super hard time in my life, and the forced happiness on that show really helped me. I never bought anything.

Now I only watch In the Kitchen with David on Sundays, but I still never buy anything. I do enjoy it though!

I’ve bought a number of things from qvc over the years...pre-Amazon days! My mom still shops with qvc. She got all her kids the “phone soap” for Christmas 2019 and I threw mine in a closet till covid arrived a few months later! Brought it my office for us all to use (till we went remote). I remember phone soap was sold out everywhere at the time.

We keep the shopping channel on as a night light that has no murder and no mayhem on it. So no weird dreams at night. I also appreciate the happy snark-free attitudes.

I never watch, but I do check their website once in a while. They sometimes have good deals on security cameras and doorbells which I am into.

I immediately get flashbacks of rotary phones and touch key phones and tangled pigtail cables thinking about QVC. Nobody in my family ordered from them but somehow it was being watched here and there.

My only memory is seeing an actor from Evil Dead 2, Richard Domierer, hosting a segment on there in the 90's.

How can they have multiple shopping networks in an age of online ordering? They must be making insane bank.

I never watch, but I do check their website once in a while.
Oh so they are keeping up with the times then.

HSN is actually the third largest employer in Pinellas County, FL.; they employ more than 2000 people there. Lots of fairly well-paying jobs in the production studios, but also lots of minimum wage work on phone lines.
