Qusetion about charcoal grill at FW

So how do you know when to put the burgers on?
also, how much charcoal do you put on the bottom and how low do you put the metal grate?
HEEEEELLLLPPPP:confused3

According to this web page it takes about 20-30 minutes http://www.girlsatthegrill.com/content/templates/grilling101_template.asp?articleid=37&zoneid=4 for the coals to heat up and it's time to put your food on the grill. How much charcoal you use depends on what you're cooking and how much of it. Burgers and dogs for 3 shouldn't take too much, you could use half of a smaller sized bag, more if you're making more than that. Lower the grill to 4 or so inches above the food.

You blaspheme the art of grilling by referring to a web page. The coals are ready when you can look into the pile of gray but intact briquets and see what looks like the fires of h--- looking back. From the side, you will see the ripples of heat rising off the mound of smoldering carbon. And the final test - hold your hand about 6 inches away from the glowing heap - you should be able to hold it there no more than 3 seconds before you have to pull away. That is also about the height you should set your grill height. Keep a fire extinguisher handy when doing this test, and calm your family by informing them that the smell is only your own singed arm hairs. Lesson 3.

Lesson 4
--------

Don't pour water on the hot charcoals while your food is still over it. Unless you like the taste of ash.

There are a variety of liquids which should not be poured on to the coals, especially if you followed lesson 2.

PLAN B

If the cooking thing doesn't work out there's always Trails End or Mickey's back yard BBQ.

No matter how bad it turns out, the Chef must eat the charred meat. NEVER ADMIT DEFEAT! THE CHEF GOES DOWN WITH THE SHIP!!!!

I actually deleted that from the last thing I posted! (20-30 minutes or just hold your hand over coals, if your skin is singed, it's griller time!)

Love the low glow just inside the ready coals.

The web page search was to find a picture of coals that were ready, I guess that's something you just have to see when you do it. If you touch the coal and it does a cartoon-like poof into nothingness, then you go to Trail's End!

Now that you all made your jokes :lmao: I can answer one thing, I cant get to a state park, nor do I have much time to buy one and try at home, I work almost 7 days a week. My WDW trips I take on my time off :cool1: .

Now that that is said, I think I will just have to figure it out when I get there, if it means ruining a couple of dogs or burgers, so be it. I will print out this thread, and take it with me as well as printing some stuff I found on the Internet and maybe Ill buy a book, that was suggested in an earlier post.

The way I look at it, Im at WDW with my 2 DSs (Boys annual trip), Im gonna have a blast:cool1:

Have a good time at WDW. I am sure that if you need help some one i the campground or cabins would gladly help.

Despite my tongue in cheek answers, it pretty much sums up the way I grill, and I really did learn from some die hards in California who grilled anything that didn't move. I even barbeque the Thanksgiving turkey every year.

buy a cheep grill and practice (habatchi) less than $10 at Eckerds/walgreens or most box stores basically the same as the grills at disney

watch the food tv network.

On the web try a search on foodtv.net for "Good Eats" a lots of basic's there.
Stick with the simple stuff . Burgers, Dogs, pork chops, heat up some BBQ baked beans (open some cambpell's pork and beans and your favorite bbq sause and heat untill hot) The cabins have the basic untinsils but you will need all the condiments. Remember the meadows trading post only has a small selection of items. If you have a car with you there is a super Target and a super Wal-mart on 192 over in Kissimee (4 or 5 miles east)both have a full size grocery store inside. Then you can go for a bigger cook out..

Good luck

Jeff

Oh, I just want everyone to know that I took it as tongue in cheek, I hope by my reply before it didnt seem that I thought otherwise.

You Guys/Gals, always help when I need it, thats why I love posting here, I know i'll get all the right answers. :thumbsup2

One helpful hint I can give you: smoked sausages and hotdogs are pre-cooked, you mainly just are warming them up.

Hi Campers,

Didn't want to bother you w/ my dumb grill ??s.
So I searched & found this awesome 07 thread w/ all the answers! :thumbsup2
Any important updates we should know about ~ new grills at the Fort??

The grilling portion of my Wally World list:
14) Charcoal
15) Fire Starters
16) Disposable grill topper, tin foil & brush
17) Utensils

We’re only here for 3 nights & planning on brats & dogs once +
maybe 1 other meal on the grill max.
Should we just skip all this & eat out?

Looking forward to your wisdom!!

First of all, thanks for doing your own research. :thumbsup2

No wisdom here... :headache: but I have a few options.

You can always take your hotdogs to the campfire right before the movie and cook them there. It would be fun and you can enjoy the sing-a-along at the same time.

Lots of folks rave about the Giddyup-and -Go meal from The Fort's Trails End Restaurant.

Earl of Sandwich at Downtown Disney is my favorite quick service (and cheap) restaurant. If you are going to go there anyway, grab a few sandwiches, sit in their sidwalk dining area and people watch. They have wine and beer, too.

Have fun!
