Quit without new job. Update on page 3.

Many years ago I quit a job at a PR agency after only three months. The owner was very well-behaved in all of my interviews. I sensed that he had an "interesting personality" and could potentially be a bit difficult at times, but I thought he was more of a character than a jerk. I was wrong. He was a huge jerk. When I settled in after about a month, he let his true colors fly. He was not someone I wanted to be associated with, so I quit.

I signed up with a few temp agencies while I searched for a new job. One agency also had a division that did permanent placements and they contacted me about an executive assistant job at a bank. I ended up getting that job and starting after being unemployed for only seven weeks. I loved that job and stayed with the bank in various positions for nearly 10 years. I never regretted my decision to leave the toxic PR agency. That also marked the end of my PR career. I hesitated a little about not taking another PR job, but my new boss recognized my skills and had me helping with all kinds of projects beyond the basic scope of my job (speech writing, proofing and editing documents, even some marketing strategy). I felt truly valued and respected in that job which was a complete 180 from the job with the jerk! Life is too short and your sanity and metal health are too important to deal with abuse!

I can understand if you man a desk/phones or register needing to ask for a restroom break... but ignoring anyone who needs one is akin to abuse in my book as there may be a medical need there.

I wish you the very best for landing a new and MUCH better position with better pay.
By law I don't believe any employer can disallow you to use the bathroom. They did it for about a week at our manufacturing plant before they found out they can't. During that week, people just literally went in the drain right there in front of everyone else.

Good for you, OP! Sometimes you just know you need to get out.

Best of luck finding something wonderful!

That's right. I don't know why anyone puts up with this type of tyranny at a job. You have to go to the bathroom? GO! It's a basic human function and we all have to do it. For someone to tell you you can't is ridiculous and illegal.

I always wonder if anyone has ever actually been fired for going to the bathroom at a job after being told they can't. Sounds like great fodder for a lawsuit. I feel like this is something bosses use to control people sometimes. I hear about this being an issue in Nursing and Teaching, in particular and I don't get it. Just GO. Get someone to cover for you for a few minutes.

I have never quit without notice. But I can comment on the bathroom issue. I am nurse practitioner. I have an appointment scheduled every 20 minutes. I also have a disability. Anyway, it takes me a little longer to get the bathroom time in. Hospital administration was not willing to work with me on getting a gap in my schedule so i could use the bathroom! I had to get an ADA accommodation written so I can get a 10 minute gap in the morning and a 10 minute gap in the afternoon to use the bathroom. My poor colleagues who don't have a disability have to try to squeeze it in somewhere. This is crazy! But $$$ is more important than provider well being....even something as simple as going to the bathroom.

It's absurd at every level.

That's just terrible. I don't understand how employers get away with this - ESPECIALLY in healthcare and teaching. My goodness, NPs are advanced practitioners - practically doctors. We desperately need you - there's such a shortage of advanced practitioners. Your facility should be treating you like valued royalty - cannot believe what I'm hearing in this thread.

As if all the COVID nastiness the past few years by parents and patients wasn't enough to chase most teachers and healthcare professionals out of their fields, now this. Crazy.

I have never once had a medical appointment actually start on time, nor has the doctor been in to see me "in a few minutes" like they always say. It's always a 15-20 minute wait once the nurse takes my vitals. Take the 10 minutes to use the bathroom when you need to. Your patients can wait. Scheduling bathroom breaks is where I would draw the line.

oh, providers are not royalty. We are the equivalent of a production facility these days. It's all about how many services you can bill for. $$$$$

That is absurd.

You are correct, there is a wait to be seen. This is because much more goes into your appointment than just the time the provider spends with you. Many times there are labs or images to review, as well as catching up on all aspects of your health concerns. Most things are not simple ear aches (although I love those because they're quick). But those few minutes of face time have at least that much time spent reviewing your chart too. Then there's documentation, decision making and writing orders that take time as well. Really 20 minutes per patient is the norm, but there are times when that's just not enough. Getting to the bathroom is the last priority.

But, what matters to admin is 1. patient survey results and 2. volume. Providers (and all other roles) well being are NOT of concern.

Good luck to you OP!

I have a new job lined up and will be leaving my current job ivery soon.
My coworker is also leaving with me, so half our department will be gone very soon.
Some employers are not grasping that many times employees are leaving because of them.
I went for interview recently and the HR lady had emailed the employer to possibly be the wrong date.
I get there and the guy is apparently having a bad day and insists I missed my chance because I was there late in front of everyone.
I say you need to contact HR because this is what she emailed me. I said maybe it’s a good thing it happened because he was acting unprofessional in front of employees and guests and I withdrew my application.
That position is still open.

Bingo. I'm a teacher and am on two district level committees that involve district administration. One of those committees is looking into ways to stop the severe loss of teachers our district has experienced over the past couple of years, especially since due to the teacher shortage, replacements just aren't there. My school is literally short staffed. I have over 30 students, which isn't normal for elementary here, but we just can't find another teacher.

The district has never connected the dots to how badly the teachers were treated by the district during Covid. Now, one of the district committees I'm on is trying to create pay incentives for teachers to stay, while simultaneously the other district committee is busy slashing employee health insurance: trying to change it from PPO to HMO to save money. Trying to pass this off as no big deal as if we're idiots. Completely ignoring that if you take away incentives to stay, then more people will leave and that very attrition will cost the district money. SMH.

I teach first grade and we don’t share a door or anything. I don’t have a next door neighbor and we don’t have aides. I’ll admit I have propped the door open at times (like 2-3 times a year) and I can go fast… but there’s really not a great option. By the time I call someone (the nurse maybe?) and she gets there (if she doesn’t have kids- rare-probably would have to be before 9:30), I can go and be back. Generally… I’ll hold it. My bladder is pretty trained for specials, lunch and recess time!

DH was at a toxic job and a part time job near our house working for my employer came open. I basically told him if he didn’t quit the awful job we were going to have some major problems. He went to work one morning and told them it was his last day. He got the PT job which later turned into full time. He was like a different man. He really liked his new job and his new boss was the best one he ever had.

I'm sorry but "ask to use the bathroom", no thanks. No one should have to ask to use the restroom. I even have a big problem with kids having to ask at school. You inform the other person as a courtesy and that is about it. You have to leave for your own sanity. I did that too a few years ago.

I also find it awful that kids need permission to use the bathroom and can be told no at school. If they are so worried about kids misbehaving in bathrooms, hire attendants to keep watch. This was never an issue when I was in school. We did need a pass, but no one was ever denied.
