Quit without new job. Update on page 3.

I wish you the best. Someone who is so toxic is difficult to work for so I can understand feeling like you had to take a leap of faith. I don't know what field you work in but I cannot imagine having to ask permission to use the bathroom.
Telemetry Technician in a small hospital that os basically just a large ICU. At any given time there are only 2 people who can relieve me so I can use the bathroom. Those two people also have more things to do than time to do it. If there is a rapid or a code forget it. Those two people have to go to it. Both of them swing by when they have a free moment and I'll go see what I can shake loose. I do NOT wait until I have to go to ask. But yes there are jobs out there where you cannot use the bathroom without permission.

I'm sorry but "ask to use the bathroom", no thanks. No one should have to ask to use the restroom. I even have a big problem with kids having to ask at school. You inform the other person as a courtesy and that is about it. You have to leave for your own sanity. I did that too a few years ago.
There are legitimate jobs with legitimate reasons why you have to ask to use the bathroom that have nothing to do with some company or supervisor being on a power trip. See my above reply.

Your description above just sounds like a staffing problem to me. There should never be only one person in charge of something that they can never step away from for a few minutes. Hire more people. But of course, that costs money. We can't have less profits. No sir.

How much more staffing would you like to pay for? On any day there are 7-8 RNs, 5-6 CNAs, 3-4 RTs, 1 charge RN, and me. I get breaks. I can't go to the bathroom without permission. Which is what someone questioned. We have staffing ratios other hospitals' employees dream of. Our census is about 30 +/-1. The two people qualified to relieve me are the charge and the director of nursing. That is it. We do not have a staffing issue.

How about they hire another telemetry technician?

Not all healthcare is profit based.

I understand your situation. Fragile patients, you can't just walk away. I don't think people have any concept of how thin the staffing is and how acute the patients are these days.

Exactly, there needs to be someone, usually in a supervisory position, that can cover these types of things. How is someone in health care supposed to provide their best when their bladder is about to burst? Just because people put up with it, does not mean that it should be that way. That is inhumane.

After I put in my notice, I had a day off. I came back to my other manager asking me to reconsider. Than the manager under the big manager pulled me in and talked to me. They didn't want me to go. So I agreed to go directly under the manager under the big manager stepping down but keeping my pay. So same pay, better hours, constant days off, and much less stress. I get to keep the amount of people I earn a year (I am at 4 weeks a year for vacation).
I am happy with this. The manager I am having problems with cannot touch me unless I break a safety rule which I never do.

Good for you

Hope it all works out. But if it doesn’t, you know what you have to do!

I hope you went into massive detail on how the manager has been treating you. In fact, I would email the people you are now working under "thanking them for the opportunity to stay, as it has been extremely stressful working in such unprofessional conditions". Then write what you have been going through in detail.

It's best to have a paper trail with these kinds of things. Because, if that manager was lying and basically harassing you, they WILL find a way to do it again.

Best of luck to you!

I do have the paper trail. And witnesses.

I left my teaching job with no job lined up because I was just so done. I knew I could find temporary work subbing if I needed, but it all worked out and I am so glad I did!
Same
Some employers are not grasping that many times employees are leaving because of them.
When I quit my job, because of my age they gave me a clock and called me retired! That looks better in the newsletter, I guess.

I also find it awful that kids need permission to use the bathroom and can be told no at school. If they are so worried about kids misbehaving in bathrooms, hire attendants to keep watch. This was never an issue when I was in school. We did need a pass, but no one was ever denied.
I work in a high school - there is no money to hire bathroom attendants, plus, what happens when a kid wants to use a urinal? What if they say the attendant saw their private parts? Right now the big tiktok trends are to vandalize school bathrooms, post inappropriate videos of kids in bathrooms, etc. We are down to two bathrooms left unlocked, with teachers outside for hall duty. Students also vape and deal drugs in the bathrooms. No way can we just let them all go when they want to. Two out of the room at a time, must hand in your quiz or test before you go and leave your phone behind as well. Imagine a middle school or high school where the kids are allowed to just get up and walk out of the room saying they have to pee?

It's always been an issue and always will be. I was either a teacher or a student for 50+ years and it's always been an issue. Everywhere I've ever been had rules, with a basic understanding that sometimes you just have to make a run for it. Sometimes rules have to be broken. That doesn't mean they shouldn't exist. (For example don't go during instruction, etc.) I taught K/1 and one conversation the first day was generally enough to be understood. Kids get "you're not supposed to go while the teacher is talking, but if it's an emergency, RUN!" No one wants anyone to wet their pants or vomit in the classroom if it can be avoided. My dad used to talk about his experiences in a one room schoolhouse with an outhouse in the 1930s. (Since I was a teacher, we talked about all the rules, etc. that they used to have.) Same experience. I never saw it be a problem until the last 15 years or so when it seems like some people developed an "everyone is out to get my child" attitude.

That sounds like bad parenting. If you can't teach your child basic, decent behavior then you can't complain about how your child is treated when it comes to this. My kids went to a school where the majority of kids were well behaved but they still had to ask permission to use the restroom. I don't agree with that. Call out the trouble kids, but don't punish the good ones for a few bad eggs.

They are not punishing the good kids, they are keeping the bathrooms safe so they'll be able to use them. Just like anywhere else in society, rules help keep everyone safe. Most rule followers WANT rules in place for this reason.

The kids are such a mess after COVID - it's not as simple as calling them out. We did have one student, years ago, who was seriously destroying the boys' bathrooms. Huge issues, and not easily solved. Well, another student got sick of having to wait to use the bathroom (we had tightened up the security, only one student allowed in at a time, signing in and out) and called out the other student to stop vandalizing or he'd take matters into his own hands. The vandalism stopped.

Yes, we've had students afraid to go into the bathrooms - not a new issue, as I used to be afraid to go into mine in high school four decades ago. The new issues, like having someone take a photo of you from under the stall door, are very stressful to kids. We're lucky to have some single stall gender neutral bathrooms that kids can use and feel more safe in them.

But now that I've totally derailed yet another thread, I hope we can get back on topic, sorry!

gopher101 - good job advocating for yourself, and congratulations on a better position!
