"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing." ~Walt Disney

After months of talking, planning, more talking, changing, then planning again...our Disney vacation has come! And we got to do! And do, and eat and do some more! This is our Trip Report about a September Vacation (21-27 to be exact) at a Deluxe Resort (Beach Club) on the Deluxe Dining Plan (pass the Tums, please.)

But before we discuss all of the deluxe doing, let me introduce the family!
DisneyPhotoImage9.jpg

Bobby, is a college professor of Political Science. He was the one who was talking about the next time we go to Disney World on the plane ride back from our 1st trip! He is my sometimes Grumpy, sometimes Goofy, but always Peter Pan DH while at WDW.

I am Lori, a Physical Therapist (part time) and the planner of the family. Well, at least when it comes to Disney...the rest of the time, I admit I'm a bit disorganized and scatterbrained! I love Disney World, and while I love new adventures, I find myself being pulled back year after year!

And the squinty kid is Z, our 7 year old son - and lover of all things Disney - except princesses. His favorite ride is Splash Mountain, and he loves to reassure his fellow passengers that it's "not the Big Drop, yet." Until it is, then he just giggles maniacally (is that possible?)! He has his Donald Duck moments, but is usually like Pluto, lovable, loyal and full of energy!

So, how, you may ask, did we come to Disney for our third year in a row??? If you didn't ask, then the answer is obvious to you! We fell in love with Disney in October, 2008 during our first trip as a family, going again in October of 2009 after receiving what we call "The Offer We Couldn't Refuse."

Well, as we all know only NUTS go three years in a row, so we began discussing a future trip (far into the future, say 2011) with the extended family. For a variety of reasons, including a short niece with a love of all things princess and our dislike of planning a Great Gathering during a Fantasyland expansion, we decided to hold off on the BIG family vacation until 2012 or 2013. Which would leave us with at least 3 years before Disney! Unthinkable! Not to mention the fact that the 2009 trip is nearly photo-less due to a broken camera on arrival day!

So, after getting a pin in the mail and great flights out of town, it was impossible to say no! Plus, it served as a scouting expedition for our future Grand Gathering! ;) I have to admit, I was skeptical about going to WDW in September and missing the Food and Wine Festival! But MNSSHP, and the possibility of a water park and short lines, made me quickly forget about all of the world treats I would miss! Plus, DH added on the Deluxe Dining Plan, which we would soon learn was way too much food for our family!

We stayed at the Beach Club, as I was out voted by my Nautical-Loving, land-locked boys! Don't get me wrong, I love the Beach Club, but I would also love to try something new! We stayed here in 2009, and both Bobby and Z fell in love with the resort, pool, and access to the Boardwalk and Epcot! This is the longest we ever stayed at WDW, arriving Tuesday and departing Monday. And this was still not enough time!

Tuesday, Z went to school and DH taught his 3 classes. I stayed home, completing the packing (which was actually done by Monday!) and re-checking the packing list, as well as taking the garage door opener and key to the kitty-sitter. Then, at 11:30, my friend (and Mickey lover) Cheryl picked me up. After a long stop picking up Z from school (had to watch the music class practice for Grandparents Day!), we were on our way to the airport! We arrived in plenty of time to check our bag, grab a bite (a panini for me and cheese pizza for Z) and find our gate - a simple task, as our small airport has... 6 gates. That's right. 6. DH came straight from work and found us easily. And at 1:20pm, we were off to Houston! Then off again to Orlando! We arrived right on schedule and were shocked to find the Magical Express waiting for us! In fact, we were the first ones on! Meaning we had to wait...45 minutes to finally leave the airport!:rolleyes1

But we eventually made it to the Beach Club! To find this

And this!

And this view!

Don't worry - the night pictures get better with practice! After unpacking and organizing, we went for a late snack of ice cream at Beaches and Cream, then for a walk along the beach! What a beautiful way to start our vacation! No pictures, as the last time I used our camera on arrival day, it died...call me superstitious, but I was not chancing it!

"I don't like formal gardens. I like wild nature. It's just the wilderness instinct in me, I guess." ~ Walt Disney

I think this is one of my favorite quotes by Walt Disney because I can relate to it. And I have to say, no one does fake, wild nature like Animal Kingdom! This is by far my favorite of the 4 parks, and I think Walt would have liked the way it turned out. When originally planning our trip, I had Day 1 as Magic Kingdom with an 8:20 ADR at Crystal Palace for breakfast, and Day 2 as AK with an 8:10 ADR for breakfast. Perfect, right? Except when you have a husband who is a stickler for tradition! “But we always go to Magic Kingdom on the EMH Morning!” So I caved, lost my ADRs, and we rearranged the plan! At the time, I was seething, secretly hoping for long lines and getting to give the “I told you so" look. Okay, maybe not long lines, but I wanted to get to use that look so badly! But, in the long run, I’m glad we skipped those breakfasts. Trust me, you’ll see.

So Day 1, we grabbed a quick breakfast at the Beach Club Marketplace of ham and cheese omelet croissants for all! We all got our breakfast drink of choice and a water to take to the parks and ate at the bus stop, which has become our morning ritual over the past 2 trips. Can’t break tradition, can we? ;) I wish I had a picture of these - they are so good. There are still mornings I think of these, wishing I could have one. Then again, maybe waiting for the bus makes them so good!

The excitement of the morning was lost on Z, who had a hard time getting to sleep on the night of arrival. He talked…a lot. And then, when we were asleep, I’m pretty sure he talked some more. It was a short wait for the bus, and Z and I had to throw away half of our breakfast sandwich before boarding! Z leaned against me and I was afraid he was nodding off, so I tried to ask him what he wanted to do, what he wanted to ride…He never lifted his head until the “Animal Kingdom” music started playing on the bus! As soon as he lifted his head, I saw the smile on his face. He was one happy kid – and that is what these trips are all about!

When I looked at my watch after getting my bag checked, it was 8:37. We waited a few minutes, then through the turnstiles we went, lining up at the ropes. This was our first AK rope drop! While I wanted to be front and center, DH and DS went left…so left I went!

I think Pluto’s sign said it best, so off we ran…or speed walked, at least, to Kilimanjaro Safaris. With a reluctant 7 year old boy. “Look! Wait! Oooo!” And sadly, which is also a tradition, I had to pull him along. “We have to catch up with Daddy!” One thing I wish we could agree on is the Fastpass Runner idea. If he is going to leave us behind, he might as well have our cards to grab fastpasses! But he refuses, just stopping every few minutes to allow us to catch up, only to take off again! We finally made it to the Kilimanjaro Safari ride, and waited only 5 to 10 minutes to board our vehicle! I love riding early in the morning, when most of the animals are active. The only bad thing is that those poachers are active, too, but I hear they are most of the day!

On a side note, I was really pleased with my new camera! Santa brought me a Canon digital SLR after my Canon point and shoot died in October of 2009! And not just any day in October of ’09, arrival day at the Beach Club in 2009! But I was going to make up for it with this camera! And I took multiple pictures of every animal we saw, from every angle! There were a few times I wished I had my zoom lens, but I think I did pretty well – although when I look at the more experienced photogs’ shots, I think I need more practice! I love this shot of the Giraffes!

IMG_1087-1.jpg

After saving the day from those pesky poachers, we grabbed Fast Passes to do KS again later and walked on the Pangani Forest Trail. We spent lots of time watching the gorillas, especially because the new baby was out!

IMG_1123.jpg

We then made our way to Asia for the Kali River Rapids. We rode once, and when the ride was over, there was no one in the queue, so Z asked to ride again! The CM said, “Of course!” So around we went again! Then, we got off of the ride, making our way through the line not once, but twice more! The wait was under 5 minutes, and this is by far Z’s favorite ride at AK. We finally dragged our son away by tempting him with Tigers! We slowly made our way through the Maharajah Jungle Trek, but unfortunately, the Tigers were being exceptionally lazy. I say exceptionally because on the last trip, one was hiding behind the fountain, waiting for another to pass so she (the CM told us) could pounce! It is so amazing to see these big cats acting like the sweet little fuzz balls that people love at home. Of course, I wouldn’t nuzzle up to these kitties!

IMG_0597.jpg

From 2008

As we exited the MJT I stopped to put my Crocs away, realizing…I had lost my lens cap! I had no choice but to go back through the Jungle Trek to search for it (thinking it was at the beginning when I gave DH the camera). Bobby and Z went off the ride KRR again while I went around searching for the lost lens cap. Which I found. In the bottom of the camera bag. I promise I looked there first, but the good news is that the search for the lost lens cap allowed me to get pics like this!

IMG_1145.jpg

In all, Z rode a record (for him) 7 times on the KRR (4 together, 2 with Dad once all together again). He was surprisingly dry, while Mommy and Daddy – well, not so much. Thank goodness for Crocs!

To Be Continued!

We finally pulled Z away from KRR with the possibility of the lion being on his rock during the safari. We went to ride KS once more, stopping on the way for the water fountains and to see Flights of Wonder. This was our first time seeing Flights of Wonder, and it is a neat show; DS even wanted to see it again! We then ate lunch at Pizzafari. This is our first time to eat there, and it is decent pizza, although I liked Pizza Planet better! I have no pics of the pizza, but just use your imagination and think Pizza Hut’s personal pan pizzas, with slightly less grease. DS and I had cheese, DH had pepperoni. The adult's pizzas come with salad (not too bad, but pre-made and a little soggy) and dessert of either a chocolate or strawberry parfait. I think the chocolate parfait was better, while DH liked the strawberry. Neither was anything to write home about.

After lunch, we headed to Dinoland, where DH and DS rode all the Dino-rides they could. We did miss Dinosaur, as all the FP’s were gone by 2:00. Z was not upset, being just as happy to ride the Primeval Whirl again! While DS and DH made themselves dizzy, I got to see the street show of The Tropicals, pick up a gift or two and have it sent back to the BC, and have my picture taken with my 2 other favorite guys – Goofy and Pluto! Although DS was begging to have a pic with Pluto before we left home, he refused at this point, which was no big deal, because we still had Character Spot at Epcot to look forward to!

Photo0008FourBySix.jpg

We walked around the Dinosaur path, and I seem to remember more dinosaurs hiding there, but could not find many this trip. I did manage a few pictures of the dinosaur-lover and his daddy, though!

IMG_1177.jpg

We then wandered back to Asia for a spot for Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade. While waiting, we had frozen cokes from the Anandapur Ice Cream stand in Asia. Then, it was time for the parade to start! It is amazing how close you are to the characters. Z is still a bit afraid of them, but didn’t back away when they got near. This was our first time to see any daytime parade - and I loved it. Bobby gives it an “Eh, wish we would’ve done EE instead,” and Z says, “Baloo got really close to me.”

Afterward, I could see everyone was losing steam. I started trying to get to the exit, while Bobby insisted we go to see the one thing I had wanted to see for 3 years, but never got to! Bobby won, against my judgment, and it was off to see Festival of the Lion King. This was a fun show, and I’m glad I stayed for it! It was well worth it, and the three of us agreed it is a must-do, at least once.

When we finally headed home on the bus, Bobby asked for the 40th time, “Where do we eat dinner tonight?” The plan, as always, was DTD and Raglan Road, a favorite. “Why don’t we stay by the pool and eat at B&C or the Boardwalk? Or we could just swim and go to DTD later…”

Inside, I was screaming! “What!? The plan! No!!! B&C tomorrow, DTD tonight!” But he did stay for FotLK for me, and I knew once those guys got to Stormalong Bay, there was no leaving, even if I could change my 6:45 ADR to later. “Okay,” I heard myself stay…and thus begins the unraveling of the plan!

So we played at the pool, then had B&C for supper. I have to say that while Beaches & Cream’s burgers did not live up to the high expectations I had, they were adequate. However, the desserts will have me going back! This is also a must-do and a must-repeat! Bobby had the Old-Fashioned Sundae with chocolate syrup. I had the No Way Jose. Neither of us could finish our desserts – but they were so good! I love peanut butter in ice cream – a creation my dad taught me about, so mine was perfect, and I would probably get it again and again! Z got…nothing! He didn’t want ice cream, not even when our server tempted him with the Mickey Sundae! She brought him a cookie anyway, but my DS just doesn’t like sweets. He is an odd one, and if I hadn’t been in the there when he came into this world, I would think he might belong to someone else. But he is mine! Dessert-hating quirks and all!

IMG_1210.jpg

We spent the rest of the day at the pool, but skipped the movie on the beach because it was Lilo and Stitch or something else DS had no interest in. All in all, Day 1 was great! We went to be early, though, dreaming of our next morning in the Magic Kingdom!

Great day 1! I love FoTLK too!

A child that doesn't like ice cream?!:rotfl:

What fun riding KRR so much!
Yummy ice cream desserts.
What's next on the plan?

Can't wait to hear more

Glad to have you!

Great day 1! I love FoTLK too!

A child that doesn't like ice cream?!:rotfl:

I know! What is wrong with this kid! The best ice cream at WDW and he says "I'll wait and have a strawberry ice cream tomorrow!" He loves those Breyers (I think) Ice Cream bars. :confused3

What fun riding KRR so much!
Yummy ice cream desserts.
What's next on the plan?

KRR is a lot of fun, and I just have to shake my head and laugh every time he says "One more time." Up next, Magic Kingdom! If you are impressed with how many times we did KRR, you should see how many times we did Splash Mountain!

As I was putting creamer in my coffee this morning, I realized I forgot to mention the unpacking fun of arrival day! As we finished unpacking our suitcases, the "Big Bag" arrived. The checked bag is where I try to put extra outfits, hats, and the "extras" that make our room feel like home. I tried to keep track of things on the packing list we never used, and things we forgot that we actually needed!

That said, I was proud to have remembered my "Good Coffee!" I set up a snack station on the top of the tall dresser, and took out my coffee, which was in small "trial sized bags". I was also super smart and put in individual creamers in with the filters - or at least I thought that was super-smart at the time. :rotfl: The filters did not survive what I now call the Creamer Crisis. Apparently you must take pressure changes into consideration if you choose little cups of liquid creamer!!! Darn you, physics! Soggy filters don't work for coffee, although, luckily, I did put these in a baggie. Loose creamer exploded in the luggage would have been a catastrophe!

Also of note, there isn't a place to buy 4 cup size filters on property, at least that we saw. On the plus side, the coffee pot was so dirty, I wouldn't have had coffee anyway. :confused3

Things of note that were worth packing include:
  • Febreze Set and Refresh (like the Renuzit cones, but easier to pack, and better than spray) I put this in the bathroom - great!
  • Pennies and Quarters in an M&Ms tube for pressing - so much better than digging for change - and when it's gone, you're done!
  • Ziploc baggies: Great for fruit left over from breakfast you want to take to the parks, and the big ones are great for Wet socks and shoes!
  • Prefilled Envelopes for tips (Mousekeeping and ME)
  • Lanyard for DS - he had a card for each doay with our names, resort and Cell number, in case he got lost, plus he kept his GC and KTTW card in it. SO easy to make and the lanyard (Cars) was only $1 at Michaels!
  • Ipod touch for plane ride for DS, loaded with Phineas and Ferb shows and other shows he loves, most free on itunes! Much less bulky than the old DVD player!

I'll probably remember more as I go along, but these were things we had never brought before, but made the trip so much better!

We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.
~Walt Disney

It was Thursday, and that meant an Extra Magic Hour morning at the Magic Kingdom! And, as is tradition, this would be our MK day. Day 2 started off similar to Day 1, with breakfast in the Beach Club Marketplace. We ate outside in the eating area across from the Marketplace. This is our second trip to the Beach Club, but our first time eating on the patio area. It was a very pleasant morning, and I think we might have to make this a new tradition! DH and I had the breakfast croissants again, and Z had the same, with “just the egg and ham omelet, no bread.” It irritates me to no end when he is so picky! But Disney is so accommodating! “No problem,” they’ll say with a smile. I love the customer service, but it is difficult when trying to teach a child that he can try things new, or just pick things out he doesn’t like himself! I have discovered Disney World is not the place to teach a kid to “deal with” the little things he doesn’t like, like his eggs touching his other food.

We got to the bus stop just as the bus to the Magic Kingdom arrived, and we were off to Extra Magic Hours at our favorite park! I say “Our Favorite” because, while we each have a favorite park, this park is undoubtedly our favorite to experience together! We were able to snap a few shots before rope drop.

IMG_1219.jpg

Rope Drop was very quiet, probably because of the early closing for that night’s MNSSHP. I have to admit, I love Rope Drop! I might even get a little teary eyed (happy tears) thinking about it! We headed straight to Dumbo, which only DS and I rode for some reason. I think Bobby was thrown by the extent of the Fantasyland Expansion. He just kept looking at the Great Wall asking, “And when did you say this would be done?” I know he thought I was exaggerating throughout planning the trip when I told him the rumors, updates, and known facts about Fantasyland. But I think you have to be there to fully appreciate the extent of the expansion. In fact, I still keep him updated daily, because our plan is not to return until it is completed, and I can take my niece! Here’s a sneak peak I took on Dumbo!

IMG_1226.jpg

The two tents are the new Dumbo ride. I have mixed emotions about this, which means that inside I am screaming "No! Don't mess with Dumbo! It's perfect the way it is!" But this also means it might be the last time we get to ride Dumbo as it exists now. We then proceeded with tradition and rode the Tea Cups!

IMG_1233.jpg

Pictures like this are also tradition. But apparently, the teacups are getting refurbished, too! And maybe re-themed! So this might be the last picture like this we'll get!

Afterward, after much searching, we found the entrance to Winnie the Pooh. The ride actually looks closed due to all of the work being done to Pooh’s Thoughtful Spot, which was moved in front of the attraction. The queue was short, and between two blue walls – it actually looked like some kind of private walk-way! We then went to Peter Pan’s Flight, which we missed last year. I am always amazed at the line at this attraction! While waiting, at least I could look wishfully at the Small World ride (my favorite). This is another reason I can’t wait to return! We did Mickey’s Philharmagic, and Z kept his glasses on through ¾ of the show, which is a record for him! He wanted to do it again, but I reminded Bobby that in 3 years, we have never done Snow White’s Scary ride! Z has seen the movie, but he avoids anything “Princess.” Because of rumors this would be re-themed as well, I was determined to ride! Even if it meant going solo!

After some convincing, we waited a short time before getting to the front of the ride. I think the newlyweds behind us who were entertaining Z helped calm his nerves! They kept asking if he had ridden it before, if it was scary, if he thought it showed “The Kiss!” at the end… Z said, “I hope not!” and the Groom said, “Me too!” We survived Snow White’s Scary Ride, but I’m sure he won’t want to ever do it again. Somehow, we missed the carousel! I still wonder how we went by it at least 4 times without Z wanting to get on!

We had time one more Mickey’s Philharmagic before they dropped the rope into Frontierland. Then, it was off the Bobby and Z’s favorite ride –

IMG_1253-1.jpg

Got it yet? Maybe one more hint…

IMG_1249.jpg

Three rides later, we decided it was time for Big Thunder Mountain! Unfortunately, Disney said it was not time for Big Thunder Mountain. Two very nice, but very stern CMs were meeting people on the walkway explaining that BTMRR was down, and they were not sure when it would be back up! I had even taken my Dramamine so I could ride! “Check back in 20 minutes, folks!”

We rode Splash Mountain twice more before I cried uncle, making an excuse to use the rest room or something! I did (so it wasn’t a lie); and I walked back up toward BTMRR, met by the same two CMs. I then waited around to take a picture of DH and DS, hoping I wouldn’t miss them! Several shots of random people later, I found them!

IMG_1241-1.jpg

They are in the 3rd row. I love the look on Z's face. This is proof this ride never gets old!

The Splash Mountain count was up to 7 by this time. We checked on BTMRR again, and promply made a detour toward Tom Sawyer Island upon seeing the two gatekeepers in their positions. I was surprised Z wanted to do this, but I think that reading Tom Sawyer over the summer helped peaked his interest in the island! In 2008, he wandered around, but had very little interest in the story behind it. I noticed him exploring more this time, reading signs and relating things to stories. It is so cool to experience it with him, and to watch him make the connections from the stories to real life! I wondered later if he might have thought that was the real island in the book? But then again, I’m afraid asking might ruin the magic! I hoped to find a paintbrush, but by this time I knew they were long gone.

We decided to check on BTMRR one more time before lunch, because there was no way I was doing it after we ate! I’m glad we did, because it was up and running! I rode once with the family, then Bobby and Z rode once more while I grabbed Fastpasses for later. We had so much fun riding together – it is definitely worth the slight amount of nausea! Besides, it is an effective appetite suppressant! By this time, it was a rush to Liberty Tree for our 12:00 ADR. We checked in at 11:55 and were seated by 12:10. This was our first real Table Service meal on the DxDP – so I was eager to try the New England Clam Chowder as my appetizer. All of the reviews were spot-on! This is the best clam chowder I have ever had! Bobby and I shared it, and he got Z an order of Tavern Fried Cheese, which was a hit with both Z and DH! DH grew up back east, and he agreed that it was the best clam chowder he had had as well.

IMG_0195.jpg

IMG_0196.jpg

The oyster crackers were added by me, and the cheese plate is missing a few pieces, but you get the idea.

Then we had our main course. DS had cheese pizza, while Bobby and I both had the New England Pot Roast. DH always raves about this pot roast, but I didn’t care for it. Granted, it may have been BTMRR, or the clam chowder may not compliment pot roast well, but it was not for me! I like veggies, but the flavor or seasoning was what I didn't like.

IMG_0197.jpg

IMG_0198.jpg

The good thing was that not eating the pot roast left lots of room for dessert! I had something I had not seen on the menu before – it was a fruit crisp with “Seasonal Fruit.” The fruit at this time was blueberries! But what made it extra good was the mascarpone ice cream! I have never had anything like it; it was so good! My mouth is watering thinking about it. I didn’t get any pictures of dessert, possibly because I was floored when DH declined dessert!!! Then again, he did share both the clam chowder and the fried cheese, as well as cleaning his plate of pot roast. And then, DS got the kid’s sundae! Which he promptly decorated with the Mickey sprinkles and chocolate and…didn’t eat. Bobby ended up eating the sundae, and Z shared my fruit crisp, as blueberries are his favorite. We were full and happy, and on our way to Adventureland! But first, while DH was on a pit stop, Z asked to wait in line to see Woody and Bullseye. Another shock! He never wanted to see the characters before, but now that he did, I wasn’t about to say no. We waited until they went on break, and at this point, Bobby was getting antsy. So another character photo op was missed, and it was on the Adventureland!

Going back to Fantasyland is going to be like a whole new park! It's exciting!

Love the Splash photo. Looks like they are having the time of their lives!

Going back to Fantasyland is going to be like a whole new park! It's exciting!

Love the Splash photo. Looks like they are having the time of their lives!

I know! I'm so excited about this trip in 2012 I can't stand it! It's kind of sad that my mom, dad and brother won't be able to experience WDW the way I did; but then again, when I went when I was 4, it was different then, too. I think they still had the Skyway to Tomorrowland and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea!

Of course, I hardly remember that trip, so it was hard to get attached to anything :)

But I'm looking forward to new rides, new adventures...keep moving forward, right?

I love that picture, too. I want to put it into my frame at work!

After lunch, we headed to Adventureland. The entire walk was filled with Bobby begging Z to go on PotC with him, and the CM in the Pirates Queue even tried to help convince him. But Z shook his head and kept walking. We rode the Magic Carpets twice, and then, surprise again, Z said, “Okay, let’s go to Pirates of the Caribbean!” I wasn’t about to question this, but I felt bad when he kept burying his head into my arm! This was another ride we would not be going on again this trip! Yet, after the trip, he keeps telling everyone how much he loves it! Go figure! :confused3

Somehow, we escaped Adventureland without having to endure the Jungle Cruise or Swiss Family Treehouse! But, I also missed the Tiki Room, and my Dole Whip! This makes trip 4 without having a Dole Whip! Ever! But that’s why there’s always next time! By this time, the return on BTMRR had come and gone, and stomachs had settled enough to brave the two mountains. We all rode Splash Mountain with our Fastpass, and then DH and Z rode BTMRR once more while I took photos of the streets of Frontierland.

It was nearly 2:00 at this point, and we normally will leave the park, saving Tomorrowland for another day, or MNSSHP night. But Bobby was on a roll, and at his urging we crossed the hub during the Dream Along with Mickey show, watching the end of it from the far right side, near the bridge to Tomorrowland. We rode Space Ranger Spin twice, with yours truly winning both times! Once the boys couldn’t even beat me with their combined scores! Not to give too much away, but the trick is to shoot quickly and randomly. It’s like soccer – the more attempts on goal, the more chances of scoring! I can get off 20 shots in the time it takes Z to aim and hit 3. But if they ever limit my ammo, I’m in trouble!

After whopping the boys, Z and I got a Frozen Coke while DH tried to convince Z to try Space Mountain again. I was feeling brave, and I agreed to go if Z would, but he declined. I quietly explained to Bobby that it was probably Pirates or Space Mountain, but not both. He is still skittish of dark rides; even going down tube slides in water parks scares him. I wasn’t about to put him on Space Mountain, where he would be sitting alone. There’s always next time…

DH did some shopping while Z and I rode TTA. I never heard the page for Tom Morrow, but I hear it’s back! Z begged to go again, but I explained that, if he wanted to swim, we should probably head back. So our day at Magic Kingdom was over, but, as I reminded DH, we still had 2 nights planned in the park!

After a short (30 minute) swim at Stormalong Bay for DS, we quickly showered up and got dressed. Both Bobby and I wanted to get to Downtown Disney early, because we had never been there during daylight hours! We went into the T-shirt store, where Z quickly found a computer. DH found one as well, and I was in limbo, waiting for an opening. In the meantime, I was called to help Z! He was working on a T-shirt that said “World’s Greatest Dad, and Mickey with a tie. “That’s for daddies,” I told him. “I know. It’s for Daddy,” he said in his best “I’m 7 and I know what I’m doing,” voice!

So sweet! I helped him pick a size, and he did the rest. On the preview screen, he called Bobby over and proudly told him that he made him a shirt! DH decided not to get the one he had created after all, after seeing Z’s special shirt. I wish he had gotten both, but that’s just DH. I think he worries DS will feel bad if he got another shirt at the same time.

While DH helped Z make another shirt, I took a computer and made my own. Just Mickey, with my name and WDW 2010 on it. I love it! Z wouldn’t let me see his shirt until it was done, so we paid with some of our Rewards dollars (have to use them somewhere!) and then it was off to Raglan Road. We walked a little slower, taking in all the different sights and doing a little window-shopping on the way. We even had time to stop at the Lego store, where Z looked at everything and raced the lego car he built! I love all the creations inside and outside of the store!

IMG_0201.jpg

We made it in plenty of time for our 6:45 ADR at Raglan Road, and were seated quickly. I love the music and dancing, and could spend more than one night at this pub! It might be my favorite restaurant at the WDW Resort…it was at one time.

The service and the food this night just solidified its position at the top of my list. For an appetizer, we shared Smokie City. The description from wdwinfo.com is “Oven-baked layers of smoked pollock with mature Wexford cheddar and double cream, served with crusty bread. For 2 people.”

The description had changed on the menu, but I can’t remember the exact wording. Allears.net has a closer wording, “Smoked haddock, potatoes, tomatoes, and Dubliner cheese.” Neither description really does this justice. It is pieced of smoked haddock, potatoes and tomatoes in a creamy white cheddar dip. The cheddar may be smoked, because the taste was very smoky for it to be just the haddock. This is served with toasted baguettes. The taste is indescribable, and the texture was surprisingly pleasing. Even more surprising, Z thought this was the best stuff he’d ever had! But this is reading like a food review! It was great!

Main Course – 3 Fish and Chips. Z wanted the “grown up” version in the paper and holder so badly, but we explained he had to get the kids, which was the same, but already on the plate. Our server did so well, giving him his small piece of fish and his chips wrapped up just like ours. He then “served” our fish by pouring it onto the plate. Z’s was left in the paper, just like he wanted! Of course, it did not take long to hear a complaint about the fish being in the way, and eventually the tower was knocked down so the potatoes were more accessible!

For dessert, Bobby had the Strawberry and Apple Crumble. This was described as “okay.” I had Ger’s Bread and Butter Pudding. Which is indescribable. Which, again, is why I can never write a dining review! The bread is baked with cinnamon, eggs, butter and raisins (maybe nutmeg?). But I think they must leave the sugar out. It is drier than regular bread pudding, but still good as is. It is served in a tall dish with a side of cream sauce (egg yolks, milk, sugar and vanilla) and a side of butterscotch syrup, each in a serving piece that reminds me of a creamer container for coffee. You are supposed to dig a hole in the middle of this wonderful bread, and fill it with the sauces. Oh, but why? I think the trick is to try a bite of bread. Then, pour just the cream into the hole. Eat that part. Pour the butterscotch into that bigger hole. Eat that. Then keep playing with the mixture, trying both together, separately, whatever. It is like 4 delicious desserts in one! Each is different and wonderful! But enough about that - it’s making me hungry just thinking about it!

We stopped at several stores walking back to the bus stop, and even got some Christmas shopping done! We spent the most time at the Lego store, where I tried to get to the bin to build some Lego men. I learned that

1. Most kids are just playing. They are not buying anything.
2. Even though this is true, their parents will not make them move so you can build a little yellow man to buy.
3. This didn’t really matter, because there was not a huge selection of faces or anything else to build your guy for that matter.

I needed one that I had seen the year before (I call him goatee man – he was a bad guy I think in a set a friend’s child had at one time). He looks just like DB, who is an IT guy. I have a Lego man laptop that I was going have him hold. It’s hard to explain, but this little bald Lego man looks just like my brother. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be – at least this year. So he got a keychain with Dave on one side, and Bass Star on the other. He still loves Legos, so I hope he likes it. We also stopped at World of Disney, and Goofy’s Candy Factory…but I was too full to get anything! I couldn’t believe it. For months I dreamt of dipped rice crispie treats, but I couldn’t do it. One of the many pitfalls of Deluxe Dining strikes again! On the upside, Z’s shirt was very cute – a blue shirt with Pluto on it – and no words. Z’s nothing if not a minimalist. No dessert after dinner, no words on his T-shirts…

I stopped at the Christmas store for an ornament to remember our trip – a tradition I like! Then it was off to home, our new T-shirts in tote – another tradition I like! Despite my yearning to try new things, it’s funny how I gravitate towards the familiar. The things we do over and over – making T’s together each trip, a yearly ornament for the tree, Magic Kingdom on an early EMH morning – not only make me smile when we’re doing them, but give me warm feelings when thinking about them, too. I guess that is how things become traditions…but I’m still stopping at Goofy’s for a dipped Rice Crispie Treat…next time. :goodvibes

We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. ~ Walt Disney

Day 3 started with a leisurely 7:55 ADR at Cape May. This was our first breakfast at Cape May, and our second Character Breakfast since starting our family trips there in 2008. The breakfast was great, with a wide selection of foods. We were seated just off to the left of the buffet, and it was nice being close to the food. I also love the openness of the restaurant, and there is no doubt on who is coming up and how long you have left to see your favorite character!

This is the most active I’ve seen Z with characters! He actually wanted to have his picture taken with Minnie, who was the first to come by our table.

IMG_1257.jpg

DH was up getting more toast or something, so I did not get a picture with her, but I did get my picture taken with my favorite character!

IMG_1256.jpg

Bobby and Z both got their pic with Donald, who incidentally is most like my two favorite boys…short fuse, but still lovable!

IMG_1258.jpg

After breakfast, we stopped at the Photopass kiosk, where we were told to check in for our photo session. The plan was for us to get pictures done for Christmas cards, as I have family who gets very aggravated at the fact the most recent professional photo of all of us is from when Z was 6 months old! I knew morning light was better for beach photos, but I neglected to take into account the affect of the bright sun on our eyes, especially Z’s! So what we ended up with was a squinty son who eventually got frustrated with the photographer, who kept telling him to open his eyes! “But they are open!” he would whine. The photos give a nice story of how the session went, though.

I was frustrated as well. Why didn’t she have him close his eyes and then open them at the last second? But then again, she was the professional, and I thought there was probably a reason they don’t do this. (Fake smile, maybe?) But I do take some of the responsibility. I should have at least suggested it. Some of the poses were also pretty forced, at least for a 7 year old. :headache:

So in short, there are no family pictures that are Christmas Card worthy, but there are a few shots taken separately that are nice. Then again, we could have done that! It was the group photo I wanted! Grrrr! Oh, well; live and learn and we will probably not be using the private Photopass sessions again.

After the photo session, we took the bus to Typhoon Lagoon, and DH stayed on to go back to DTD to pick up a shirt he decided he needed after all! The original plan was Blizzard Beach, but Bobby thought TL would be better because of the tamer slides and the wave pool…and he was right! We got to the park at 10:15 (after opening!) and said goodbye to Daddy. Z and I chose the “Lookout” Path, and I’m glad we did. This is a great place to see the layout and just how impressive this park is. The plan was to meet in front of the wave pool in an hour, but when that plan was made, we didn’t realize how massive the pool was! There was a lot of “front” to this pool! We chose an island toward the middle, and were lucky enough to get 3 chairs together. I put our things on two of them, thinking Z would never sit down! Then, it was off to the pool! And Z was hooked after the first wave! These waves are 3 feet tall, and a blast to ride! It didn’t take Z long to find some kids close to his age to play with, passing the time until the next wave. As I was heading to shore to check the time (didn’t bring a waterproof watch, duh!), I saw a sight that will stick with me for years to come. An older woman (maybe a grandmother?) was in the shallow (maybe 2 or 3 feet) water with a little girl, and when the waves would come she would fall backward, both of them laughing with glee, coming up soaking wet and grinning! I love Disney World! :wizard:

We still had 30 minutes until we were supposed to meet DH, so I tried to get Z from the pool. But he wouldn’t budge. I was afraid he would get tired of the pool and Bobby wouldn’t get to experience it, so I said “3 more big waves, then we’re doing something else!” And he listened! We went once around the lazy river, getting off near the shark pool. I wanted to check this out, and Z needed the restroom. And surprise! We saw…Daddy! He was checking out the shark pool, too! We ended up not staying, because I didn’t want to be the only one doing it. We floated the short distance to the front of the big pool together and I was happy to see that DS was not tired of the pool, yet. In fact, it was like pulling teeth to get him to do anything else! DH and Z love the wave pool! It was great to see them playing together… I went back and took our things to a locker, since it was obvious someone else could be using those chairs! I also got a yummy Mango Smoothie, but it wasn't on the Dining Plan.

We eventually tried all of the slides, riding each one once. We started at Gangplank Falls. This is a great place to start, especially if you have timid children. They love riding with mom and dad and seeing them get soaked! We then did Keelhaul Falls and Mayday Falls, because I thought that was the ascending order of scariness. I don’t know if I remembered that correctly, but the truth is, neither was bad at all! The only thing was that Z had to carry his own raft, and it was hard for him to do. DH and I ended up taking turns putting our rafts on our backs like turtles and toting his up the stairs. The waits were not bad, and a light drizzle started. But we were already wet, anyway! Thankfully, there was no lightning and we were able to have lots of fun.
Next, we did the Storm Slides. There are 3 of these slides, so one for each of us! I was pretty sure I had won, but the CM shook his head and pointed to Z, much to his delight! I still think I might have won, but I guess that’s part of the Disney Magic! I wanted a second shot, but Z wanted to try the Crushin’ Gusher. There are three slides here, and two let you ride 1-2 people per raft and the other (maybe the middle?) lets you ride three to a raft. We rode together. And we will now pause for a Public Service Anouncement… When the CM says “Lift your bottom,” he/she does not mean at the beginning. They mean throughout the entire ride. Both DH and I were limping afterward due to sore tailbones! And DH is not a large man! So, lift your bottoms, the whole time!!! Now back to the TR…

By this point, Z decided he was ready for the Humunga Cowabunga! After reading a great TR where this was referred to as the Humunga Wedgie-bunga, I had decided I wasn’t going. But Bobby had had it with heights, and this is a tall slide. So up I went. I wasn’t too worried about the Wedgie-bunga – I had on board shorts, right? Man, this slide is fast! And fun! And, boardshorts or not, I did experience why this was so appropriately nicknamed. Just remember to keep you legs together until you stop completely. It’s not worth trying to slow down.

Next we took several trips around the lazy river again. There are some great places to eat at Typhoon Lagoon, I’m sure. But we did not experience them. By the time we even thought about eating, it was close to 3, and we had a 5:40 ADR at Kona. So we went through a few more waves before saying goodbye to Typhoon Lagoon.

To be Continued...

We left Typhoon Lagoon and headed for the bus stop. This was the longest we waited for any bus at WDW - 30 minutes! I'm sure we made quite a site - very tired and wet family, with DS leaning on DH almost asleep! But we could not have any of that - we were going to the Polynesian Resort tonight!

We had just enough time to shower and clean up before heading to Kona Cafe. We took the bus to MK, then found the resort Monorail. This was our first time on the Monorail, and Z loved it!

IMG_1276.jpg

IMG_1277.jpg

We arrived at The Polynesian, which is a friend’s favorite resort. We had never seen it (besides pictures) and at her urging we decided to take a trip over and try Kona. I didn’t get any pics of the food, except dessert ;) but I did meet a very nice DISer and her DH who sat next to us – and ordered the same main courses we did! Bobby had the Kona Salad, but thought the dressing was too citrusy and sweet for his liking. I had the Lump Crab Cakes (which were delicious) and a Tropical Macaw to start. Mmmm; both were great! For our main course, Z had the Hot Dog (of course!) and I had the Pan-Asian noodles, which were also very good. Bobby had the Ginger Crusted Rib Eye, which he ordered medium-well and came out quite rare. I urged him to send it back, but he decided to grumpily eat it instead. He insists that if they do not get the steak right the first time, it cannot be cooked again until the right “doneness” is reached. Plus, he thinks sending it back upsets the cooks, and that then they tend to over-do meat. This is one occasion where he wasn’t being picky – it really was on the red side of pink in color.

He said the flavor was really good, however, but wished they would have given him more that the 5 or 6 slices of potatoes! He will never be back to Kona Café. Our server was never seen after she brought our food, but he wouldn’t have complained even if she did ask how the food was. He is a one strike and you’re out sort of person. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Just be prepared to speak up if the steak isn’t done to your liking. Or just don't get the steak. :confused3 For dessert, I had the Kilauea Torte, which seemed dry to me. DH got the White Chocolate Cheesecake for Z and he had Z’s Sundae again.

IMG_0202.jpg

As far as the resort, it was nice, but apparently not our style. We were unimpressed from what we saw. Bobby does admit that he would like to try ‘Ohana. I think this is probably more fitting our style, if we have one! We caught the Monorail to the TTC and then caught the Epcot Monorail. The ride was fun, and we met a neat CM who told Z all about the Monorails, and how next month she got to start driving the Monorails! How cool is that!

As a game, we tried to see how many colors of the Monorails we could find. I did not succeed in my goal of getting a photo of one of every color, but we saw most of them. We even saw one wrapped at Epcot, advertising for Tron! But I didn't get a picture of it! Never mind Christmas card photos - I should have gotten a pic of that!

IMG_1285.jpg
You can see how tired the poor guy is here!

As we got to the gate at Epcot, the rain started again. Of course, our ponchos were in the backpack, which I had decided we did not need for Kona…so it was in our room! But the drizzle wasn’t that bad, and as people left the park, we hurried to make the most of the rainy evening Extra Magic Hours. First stop, Mission Mars. I was not prepared for this, as I had just eaten and all of the Dramamine was in the backpack, so I waited in the gift shop. Of course, Z wanted to go again.

IMG_1287.jpg

So I walked to Fast Track, which had a 60-minute wait and no FastPasses left for the day! I walked back to Mission Space and played in the center where the ride unloaded for a bit. Afterward, Z was getting tired, and we knew he had a long day. We slowly walked to the back of the park, where we got a beer and caught IllumiNations outside of Canada. This is my third trip, and probably 5th or 6th time seeing this show. And I have to admit - I finally got it. I mean really understood what the story-tellers were trying to convey. Apparently I'm that slow. Or just tired by the end of the day! We then walked home through the International Gateway. Along the way, I was able to get a few pics. I played with setting on my camera, but could never master capturing the Boardwalk lights at night without it being a blur or too dark to see. Maybe with more practice!

IMG_1295.jpg

IMG_1314.jpg

Overall, it was a fun day filled with great new experiences like the Monorail and Typhoon Lagoon - as well as some not so great new experiences - like steak at Kona, but it was nice to end with the familiar sights of Illuminations and the cool walk home.

Next Up: Who wins Toy Story Mania?
And later: Will Bobby get a decent steak?

I haven't heard many good reviews regarding the PhotoPass sessions. I'm sorry to hear you didn't get the family shot you were looking for.

Good to know about lifting your bottom! :thumbsup2

I hope Bobby gets a good steak soon! :goodvibes

Lori,

Hello from a fellow Texan. Great trip report so far. I can't wait to read more.

On the photopass sessions they are so hit or miss. We have done two now. One at the Polynesian in 2008 and one this summer at the Grand Floridian. We were very fortunate that both times our photographer was Stacy. She is amazing. It was very nice the second time when we arrived and she was like I know you guys. :) Unfortunately, she now only works on call. She lives in another state and will come to Disney for a week or two at a time to work as a photographer.

Next time you would like photos at the resort I would suggest Randy Chapman. His prices are a little higher but his work is exceptional. He photographed our wedding in 2003 and has also done family pictures for us at the Boardwalk. :thumbsup2

Oh, he does, or I wouldn't have made such a big deal about it! But he still gets pouty when he talks about it...

Hi there! That's good to know...We were hoping to do another one with the extended family, but we were kind of afraid to. I'll have to check out Randy Chapman's work...

It happens every year. We say, “This is the last time we are going to do Hollywood Studios.” And then the next year, we go to DHS again! This year, two of the three reasons we even went to begin with were closed for refurb. Disney: One Man’s Dream and Star Tours were both out of commission. So I fully expected we were not going. But after getting their bottoms handed to them on Space Ranger Spin :cool1: , Bobby and Z were itching to get to Toy Story Mania and redeem themselves.

So, with visions of New High Scores dancing in their heads, Bobby and Z pulled a reluctant Mommy to the waiting boat for Disney Hollywood Studios’ Extra Magic Hours. We made it for “Rope Drop” which was totally unimpressive after seeing MK’s and AK’s. And the race was on for Toy Story Mania! I can’t believe the rush to get to this one attraction! Then again, it is just about the only “ride” for younger kids, and those that won’t do R&RC or ToT.

Here is a photo of the wait times when we first arrived.

IMG_1321.jpg

I allowed Bobby and Z a warm-up run while I waited in one of the long lines for fastpasses. Then, I grabbed my camera for some shots of Pixar Place. I love this part of DHS! The theming is just terrific…

IMG_1323.jpg

Soon, DS and DH were done, and it was back to the line for a ride all together. The wait time posted said 40 minutes, which is the longest we’ve waited for anything at WDW. But in reality, we got to the front in 25-30 minutes. We know, because DS got to carry the card to determine the wait time. The funny thing is, at least once a day he carried one of these cards. Some times multiple times a day! I know it makes him feel very “big” to help!

IMG_1326.jpg

After TSM, we went to the Art of Animation. This was our first time for this attraction, and DH and I loved it. However, it is probably not the best idea to put a 7-year-old perfectionist in front of a light box and tell him to draw Donald. He was so upset that it was not exactly like our teacher’s!

IMG_1331.jpg

We stopped and watched High School Musical, which Ds loves, although he has never seen any of the movies. He does like Camp Rock, though, so I bet he would like Disney Rocks (the new show at DHS). But then again, this year is the last time we are going to DHS, right?

Next, we walked to the other side of the park, staring at R&RC and thinking, “Maybe next year.” Then we listened to the screams coming from the ToT, and thought, “Maybe next year.” We did go into some if the shops. I’m not a big shopper, but I could easily spend all day in these shops (Okay, one big shop that looks like lots of smaller shops!) I found a cute, trendy bracelet for our friends’ daughter (a Freshman in high school) who was sitting our cat, and a trendy bracelet for myself as well! Mine was a stretch bracelet with lots of loops on it, with some Mickey shaped loops hidden inside. I didn’t wear it until we got home, and we were sitting in church one Sunday when DS exclaimed (rather loudly) “There are hidden Mickeys on your bracelet!” Gotta love it!

And, the most shocking thing of all, Z parted with a small portion of his vacation money! He ended up buying a bubble gun for $10. And it is still going, 2 months later. So far, it is the best bubble gun he has owned!

Before much time had passed, it was time for the first Lights, Motors, Action! We trekked across the park, and we now know why you should arrive early. Everyone arrive 5-10 minutes before the show starts. So what you have is a head of people trying to get through the line, up the stairs of the stadium and to a seat in a rush, so they don’t miss anything! That is the last time we do that. 30 minutes ahead of time from now on. That works on everything we have ever done in the parks so far. This was a good show, but not one I’d see more than once. We posed for a few pics on the Streets of America.

IMG_1355.jpg

Then it was time for our ADR. We ate lunch at 50’s Prime Time Café. I wasn’t sure what to expect, because some reviewers find the wait-staff is rude; others say it’s part of the atmosphere. It was unanimous – this restaurant was so great! It had it all…great food, great service, and even great atmosphere. We did not find it noisy at all! In fact, we might go back to DHS one more time to eat here again. But that will be our last time.

IMG_0211.jpg

IMG_0212.jpg

I wish I had gotten more pics, but I seem to forget about it until dessert! DH had a shake, I had cherry Coke, and DS had Sprite. The Cherry Coke was so good - with real cherry syrup! mmmm

For an appetizer, we had the onion rings. They were so good! You could easily just eat these, and be done. But there was more food coming! I had the Stacked Sandwich. "Something light," I thought...Boy was I wrong! And you don't get dessert unless you finish it! There had to be 2 pounds of shaved turkey on that thing! I gave up on ever seeing dessert, but our waitress caved and brought it out anyway!

DH had the Caesar Salad with Chicken. He said it was good, and he was glad he had gotten it, but as far as Caesar Salads go, he had better. We both agreed we would order something different next time. :)

DS got yet another hot dog.

For dessert, Bobby got Dad's Brownie Sundae. I watched him eating it, my half uneaten sandwich still in front of me. I admit I was jealous. But he didn't even offer me a bite! He and Z shared it!

Then I got my Boston Cream Parfait. Bobby's favorite Pie is Boston Cream, so i was surprised when he didn't order this. I took a bit and was in heaven. It was so good! Some of the chocolate layers were even hardened a bit (like a shell) so the crunch of the shell and creaminess of the pudding was just so good! DH even asked me if it was good. I said yes, and ate as much as I could. I was see he was angling for a bite, and eventually he got it, because I just couldn't finish it all! We left the park beyond full - except DS, who has a hollow leg. He was asking for ice cream at the resort as soon as we got on the boat!

I don't know if we'll go to DHS again next time (probably so) but this is the last time we will ever do Deluxe Dining!
