I'm having a fence replaced right now (Sandy knocked down the old one). I don't have to tip the guys, do I?

There's 2 guys here, neither one is the person who came to give me the original estimate.

Thanks!

(I read a tipping question and it made me panic.)

I wouldn't tip them unless they do something above and beyond the scope of what you expect . I would make sure that I was bringing lots of very cold drinks and maybe some snacks out to them while they do they job.

They are being paid, you are not required to tip them. I agree with previous poster..provide cold water and you are good.

Tipping has gotten out of control! It is for people that do not make minimum wage. I am sure the fence guys do. The postman does, the plumber does, the hairdresser does, the girl at Starbucks does too. Servers at restaurants do not. That is why they are tipped. I am so tired of everyone holding their hand out for a tip for doing a job they are already paid to do. Sorry, that's the end of my rant.

I hear ya!! I'm so tired of this tipping craziness.

Thanks! I kept them hydrated and didn't tip. I had no intention of doing it and then the last minute panic set in that they would expect it!

Personally, I am quite happy to tip well when I do tip but I agree that it is going a bit overboard!!

Don't always be sure your hairdresser makes minimum wage. I am a hairdresser paid a 'daily rate'. If I calculated my hours per week into just pay, not including tips, it's below minimum wage. That is partly the reason, like servers, we are a tipped position.

In my province 'tip jobs' have a minimum wage less than the regular wage by a couple of dollars. The government has receipt machines in every establishments and the workers are taxed on everything they sell times 15%. So if your bill is $100 and you don't leave a tip, the waiter still has to pay income tax on fifteen dollars.
