Quick survey for those in the US - please help me test out an interesting theory

1 - How far is the closest grocery store from your house?

About 1/4 mile from a bird's eye view. But driving or walking, it's a little over a mile.

2 - What state do lyou live in (if you are not comfortable posting this information, you can just give the part of the county you live in)

California.

3 - What state or part of the country have you lived in for most of your life?

California.

1 - How far is the closest grocery store from your house? 1.5 Miles
2 - What state do lyou live in (if you are not comfortable posting this information, you can just give the part of the county you live in) Oklahoma
3 - What state or part of the country have you lived in for most of your life? Oklahoma

My DD read/heard something rather interesting and I though the DIS would be a great place to test it out. Please answer the following questions WITHOUT reading any of the responses first. This is the one time it is a GOOD thing to poast before reading all the replies. :) Once enough people have replied, I'll come back with the hypothesis and whether or not it seems to have proven correct:

1 - How far is the closest grocery store from your house?
2 - What state do lyou live in (if you are not comfortable posting this information, you can just give the part of the county you live in)
3 - What state or part of the country have you lived in for most of your life?

Thanks!

1. 6 miles
2. Nevada
3. California

Carly, you are close. The theory is that people from the south respond in minutes, while northerners respond in miles. We really need more responses from Southerners! Also, I thought it was interesting one poster responded both ways. BTW, I am from the south and always refer to distances in terms of time even if I have to qualify it (ie - 30 minutes with no traffic 45 minutes during rush hour).

I consider myself from the south (Oklahoma), but responded in miles. I think because the question was about a place so very close (in my case, 1.5 miles). If you'd asked me how far it was to my mother's house - I would have said 30 minutes.

But since the grocery store is so close - those two whopping traffic lights can vary the trip from 2 to 8 minutes. ;)

1 - How far is the closest grocery store from your house? about 5 minutes

2 - What state do lyou live in (if you are not comfortable posting this information, you can just give the part of the county you live in) I live in CA, for the exact location see my location :)

3 - What state or part of the country have you lived in for most of your life? Where I am now but I didn't always live here

about 4 miles

1. 3 blocks
2. Alaska
3. Ohio

I live in Northeast Ohio.
There are two grocery stores within a half mile of my house.
Liz

1. 6 miles that take about 20 minutes
2. Maryland (a rural county now)
3. Maryland

I will have to go look for the theory.

ETA - I was going to say 20 minutes but saw everyone else responding in miles so I did as well but added the minutes because that is what I would have said. We are south of the Mason Dixon line.

That is interesting. I responded in miles becuase we live way out of town, where there is no traffic. In town with traffic I respond in minutes because that is much more helpful. So, my hairdresser is 45 min away, but only about 10 miles. out where we live 3 miles would be aboiut a 5 min trip, so time isn't as significant.

1 - How far is the closest grocery store from your house?
Under 1 mile. We can walk there.

2 - What state do lyou live in (if you are not comfortable posting this information, you can just give the part of the county you live in)
Georgia

3 - What state or part of the country have you lived in for most of your life?
Southeast

Interesting. I'm from PA and have lived here all my life. People around here generally respond in minutes and I do too. But, for my answer here, thinking that you literally wanted a distance I gave miles. If I were speaking to you in person I would have said "Oh, it's only 5 minutes from here". If you asked me how far I lived from my parents I'd say 2 1/2 hours.

1 - How far is the closest grocery store from your house?
I'd say about 1 mile.

2 - What state do lyou live in (if you are not comfortable posting this information, you can just give the part of the county you live in)
Kentucky

3 - What state or part of the country have you lived in for most of your life?

Kentucky, but I was born and raised in Michigan.

Didn't work for me. I almost always use miles/distance. But then, I've lived in large cities outside the U.S. as well as the Southeast.

The closest grocery store is 5 minutes from my house. I live in Massachusetts, have lived here my whole life.

1. just over a mile (1.1 to be exact)
2. Florida
3. I've lived in 3 different states in the south for the majority of my life with a short stint in NYC.
