I wouldn't ask my children to lie, I would tell them to!

But why? Why wouldn't you encourage them to be honest, to tell the truth? "She said no" instead of "she's not home"? "She's not home" makes sense when the person requested isn't home, but when the conversation is, "Mom, it's Wicker Picnic Baskets" and you can hear mom, probably in the same room saying "Tell them I'm nto home"? Or even jst tell the kid to hang up? Maybe rude, but as ALOT of people have said, invading your home uninvited even by phone is rude in many opinions too.

I agree with you SAW...I wouldn't tell a kid to lie either...I'd just tell them to say "No thank you we are not interested".

FWIW, I think people who are rude to telemarketers say more about themselves than anything else.

If I happen to pick up a telelmarketer call, I just politely say "No thank you I am not interested" and hang up.

But then again, I'm a nurse so I deal with rude people all day long adn don't want to be one of them.

I'm another where I'm at the point where I just don't care. I often work from home and my work often requires intense concentration. When I'm interrupted like that it can take me 5 to 10 minutes after the call to get back to where I was in the job. I have to keep a phone line active in case the kids' school calls about an emergency.

Those uninvited interruptions interfere with my ability to do my job and are far more rude than anything I've ever said to a telemarketer IMHO or a phone slam - especially after the Do No Call list and in the case of some companies where I've asked repeatedly not to be contacted again .... on the phone and in writing.. and no ... I'm not going to politely "hear them out" and playing nice only gets you a longer interruption.

Now I look at telemarketers a little differently. I had a telephone line installed and purchased a phone for MY use. Not for ANYONE else's use. When I give my number to friends, family or anyone else, I am giving them access to my phone line.

Compare any other utility you pay for. How would you like if your neighbor hooked into your electric meter and took electricity you are paying for? How about if someone stopped by and ran a hose from your outdoor faucet to a tanker truck and took a few hundred gallons? Whats the difference? They are all utilities that are paid for by the owner or subscriber.

I don't look at employees of telemarketing companies any differently than I would look at an employee of someone that sent you out to borrow my car without my knowledge or consent. Other folks may not agree, but I look at it as theft of services. In order for you disagree with me you would have to come up with a pretty compelling argument as to why you should be able to use ALL the utilities that I pay for.

You are using a utility that only I pay for. What gives anyone that right?

And as far as being concerned as to what I am teaching my children? That's precious. I couldn't care less what they say to a telemarketer.

I don't answer my phone. It's for MY convenience, not for the caller's. By the way, I've had caller ID for years... but just hooked up a phone with a caller ID display about thirty minutes ago . I don't care WHO'S calling. Leave me a message. If I want to talk to you, I'll call you back.

Well, yeah - that's pretty much somebody's... hold on... MushyMushy'? - stance, just in a wider scope. I think she's the poster with a cell phone with limited minutes? So a telemarketer calling her, using her minutes, is costing her money - just as with your more widespread examples of outsiders using YOUR utilities and costing YOU money in the process.

Only in this one case its the utility that's not costing you any extra for extra use. But that's besides the point.

We don't have any idea if its okay with you for your kids to lie to you as well as for you, but why make them lie any time? Why not just tell them to say "she said no" or "she doesn't want to talk to you" and to hang up? Or tell them to just hang up? What's wrong with the truth?

We just say 'no thanks' and hang up before the person can say more. Or at least we did when we still had our landline. I love not having a landline!!!

I understand that most people doing this type of work are kinda forced into it. Seriously, who enjoys cold call work? For that reason, I try not to be rude.

Exactly. That's why I say "Not interested" and hang up as quickly as possible. They can move onto the next call instead of wasting time on me.
