My husband and I are looking into buying a pop up so we can camp at disney next year and we camp around the state alot... well we are thinking things and I was wondering if the pop up has electric brakes and the truck we need to pull it is an F-150 does that matter? We were told that we need to have aux brakes and an electric brake controller in the truck... Just wondering if this is true or not.. Thanks alot. I am just trying to get an idea about things..

Not sure what part of Michigan you are from, but we are from Kalamazoo.

We have a mini van and this spring upgraded to a new/larger Viking. It's weight was 1,800 lbs and we decided to have electric brakes put on it. We also had to have the connection added to our mini-van. The RV dealer was able to do both and I think the cost came to $200 both both the pop-up and the van wiring/connection.

I was told that some vehicles come with the wiring already ... it wasn't a big deal to have it added for ours.

We have been towing campers to WDW now for 10 years and really do love it!!!

If your truck is already wired for electric brakes (there would be a series of loose wires with a white or black end cap on them under the dash board near where the gas/break pedals are) then the brake box would be about $40. That is what I paid for the box and installation but my truck was prewired for elec. brakes.

Don't know anything about adding electric brakes to a trailer. Our camper already had electric brakes.

In NH if the unit has (does not matter size or type) electric brakes they have to work. That means you have to have the controler in the truck. Also that means the unit must have a battery or another 12v source to activate the brakes if the camper where to ever get loose.

I am not sure of other states laws on this but it is a good rule to follow. If it has brakes make sure they work. It will only help you to slow down and save the wear and tear on your truck. And it can always be used on any trailer with electric brakes so you don't have to upgrade the controler everytime you get a new camper...
