We leave in 3 days and I'm starting to stress...we are doing a Bahama Cruise, so we need birth certificate and driver's license, how does a birth certificate prove who you are when obviously the maiden name is different than the current name. Do we need our marriage license too?

The birth certificate is for citizenship.
No, you do not need marriage license. Just state issued ID and birth certificate will be sufficient.

Sure thing.
We are on the Dream this Friday ..is that your sailing?

People are rarely asked for marriage certificates, but they CAN ask for them. And by gosh they should! You've got a BC in the name of Mary Smith and now a DL in the name of Mary Jones? Seriously? They should absolutely ask you for the legal document showing that you went from Smith to Jones.

If I had changed my name I would bring it and show it every time. (except that I don't go outside of the country without my passport)

If DH changes his name to mine after his mom passes (he has wanted to change it since we got married but the crud would have hit the fan if he had while his parents were around), don't you want HIM to have to show the legal document bridging the identities? You can bet they would require it from any man. So they should require it from women.

I'd bring it. And show it.

Bingo. The passport makes it all easier.

Sadly, with three days to go, that's not an option for this cruise.

So yeah, I'd bring i just in case.

When I got my drivers license with my married name on it, I had to bring my birth certificate and marriage certificate at that time. To get my SS card changed to my married name, I had to bring my ID, birth certificate and marriage license. When I got my passpport, I had to bring my birth certificate and drivers license.

When I took my first cruise (without passport) I brought my birth certificate and ID with married name on it. Because in order to get all those other legal documents with a married name taken care of ,it all came back to a birth certificate.
