I'm considering booking 2 different airlines, one for the trip in,one for the trip home,is this doable? it just works well with the fares offered and schedules- anyone done this before- would there be any problems?

Oh yeah, did it for some friends. Absolutely no issue with it. The times were better for them with the same price.

Thanks! I did it- jetblue had a better rate going down- Airtran had a better time flying back....so hopefully-it'll be fine! BTW,I found some older threads on this subject, which brought up the possibility of extra security checks for one ways....has anyone actually had this happen? And by 'extra'what does that mean? like how much time could it take? I don't want to be flattened on the ground or anything......:rotfl:

There's always a possibility of random extra security checks. However, I think it is more likely if the ticket was bought very recently, travelling alone or paid for in cash.

You probably won't have to worry about it. One-way tickets are one of several things that can raise security flags. Others include last minute ticket purchaes, flying into the Washington and New York areas, and paying for tickets in cash. So your one-way tickets would raise suspicions a little but not necessarily enough for you to face the extra security.

If you do have to face the extra security, it still probably won't be a big deal. I was selected for the extra check once because a flight cancelation resulted in me being put on another airline. So I technically was flying on a one-way, last minute ticket into the Washington area which no doubt raised a few of the warning flags. But it wasn't a big deal. They asked me to step to the side and then they took the hand wand and ran it over every inch of me. They then checked every pocket of my backpack and did a chemical test to check for explosive materials. It was fairly thorough but quick. The whole process only took about 5 minutes.

I believe they also do more rigorous checks sometimes. But I don't know what is involved there or why they are done.
