Quick! Do the boards really shut down..

for an hour at midnight - and if so, why?

I read something about that on another thread and here all this time I thought it was something to do with my computer or my cable service every night at midnight!

Maybe "shutting down" isn't quite the right phrase, but around 12:15 or so the pages take FOREVER to load - and it takes FOREVER to post - so I've been getting frustrated and just getting off.. Then I read this thing on another thread..

Anyone else?

You mean - every night? I'm on at 9 PM, PDT many times. I may have also been on at midnight our time, but I'm not sure. I don't think the boards go down every night. But when Alex needs to update something, the middle of the night is the most logical time for it.

Ive never noticed any slow down either. I usually have multiple websites open though so it may take longer than usual and I wouldnt notice. My internet does get slow around 2-3ish most nights and Ive figured it because of bellsouth doing something.

Recently, they've been getting reeeeeally slow around 12:10 or 12:15. But not "shut down." About 10 minutes later, they're running at full speed again.

My guess? Mr. Webmaster Alex gets drunk and passes out, then someone takes over.

I work in IT. That being said if the boards are like most places they backup the systems at night. You can still get on but it is SOOOOO slow. I am at work right now and have about 100 backups running on around 25 different servers. I am also the Helpdesk so from time to time I get someone calling in complaining about how slow something is running. It is just the way it is.

I notice it too. It happens at a little after 9 pm our time. I'd love to read and post more, but it gets frustrating and I quit.

Every night sometime after midnight and before 1, everything grinds to an utter halt. By the way, I'm on pacific time.

If I come back around 1:30 (yes I stay up late) things will be back up and running.

You're not alone CAnn!! At 12:15 exactly is when everything reallllly slows down for me too. I'm glad it wasn't just me!

I think I remember reading on the Tech Board somewhere that is when they run the backups here so that is probably normal. I also rememember that for a while the boards were shutting down completely around 2 or 3 am for a few minutes, but I am not sure if they still do.

Ask this question on the Tech Board and you will probably get a real answer. Of course it is a few minutes before midnight by my clock so Alex may be drunk already

I'm here every night and at 12:25 Westcoast time, which is 3am Eastcoast time. Eastcoast at 12 midnight has no slowing ....they slow so bad that it takes forever for a post to go through if it ever even does. I have waited for as long as 10 minutes for my post to go through and my comp is still reading at only half a bar,

I'm glad it does that because it makes me get off I have tryed to get back on up till 1:00 and still working to slow and takes forever. 1:30 I have been told is when the boards are working at fast speed again.

As far as shutting doen they dont but they might as well be for as slow as they become.

Eastcoasters has no slowing only Westcoast at 12:25 everynight
