We are going to Disney in October and this is the first trip with a DSLR ( I have a nikon D90) I am trying to decide what is the best way to take the camera on the plane and keep it safe while flying. I know a camera being carried or around the the neck counts as a personal item but I was unsure if you where allowed to keep your camera around your neck or if It had to be stowed before take off. If so I assume most put their camera/camera bag under the seats rather than in the over head compartment. I have a soft sided camera bag and am nervous about putting it underneath the seat.. so I am really looking for some input. I think it would be easiest just to be able to wear the camera rather than store it over head or under the seat but need input on whats allowed and what you do.

I took my 50D and lenses+accessories on a number of planes. Put it in a Crumpler 6 million dollar home under the seat. No big deal putting it here, very safe. I'd rather have it here than risk banging it on seats on the way down the aisle because it was around my neck.

I have the Lowepro Fastpack 250. It holds my camera, lenses and other acessories, plus my lap top. It's heavily padded. When we flew to Disney and other trips I've used it as a carry on. I stored it under the seat with no problems.

Mine stays in its bag (Crumpler 5 million dollar home) and that goes in my 21" carryon. That way gear stays with me and I still have room left in my carryon for clothes, etc. I'd carry the case but my #2 carryon is my laptop backpack, so it has to go in the rollaround carryon.

Thank You for all your answers. Its been 3 years since I flew and I am sure once I am on the plane I will sit there thinking why the heck was I worried about it being under the seat.. things always seem different from the before.
