Questions for early Alaskan cruisers!

Does anyone have a recommendation for shoes? Is a regular sport type shoe ok or would a hiking type shoe be better?

I guess it depends on what you plan to do - are you going on excursions with outdoor activities or just looking around town when you are in port?
I would have shoes appropriate for what activity level you are doing.

I have been scanning through the thread, and will answer some of the questions that I haven't seen answered (I think!)

Did anyone use the Quick Shuttle to Seattle after the cruise? If so, please describe the process. Thanks!

Yes, I took Quick Shuttle. Took the 9:15 departure. Arrived at the Seattle airport at 1:10 p.m. Got dropped off right at Delta Airlines. The border crossing was great. Because we were on the specific cruise bus, we were not required to take any of our luggage off the bus, just ourselves and our passports. Walked through customs, back on bus and on our way in less than 15 minutes. It was very convenient and the bus driver was awesome! The shuttle pickup is right inside the cruise terminal and you can get free luggage carts right to the bus.

Just wondering about the Dining Rotation for the Alaska cruise. Does it follow the 1-2-3-1-2-3-1 format where you dine in your night 1 restaurant 3 times? I'm guessing that's how they will do it but I know sometimes they change it up.
Can you tell I'm getting ready to book my Palo reservations :thumbsup2

We were on TAPTAPT. Worked great with formal night ending up in Triton's! Main dinner 5:45 p.m. If you came back from excursions late, our servers just told us to come in whenever we arrived.

Thanks!
Kelly

I am on the 9 am shuttle to Seattle which will get me to the airport almost 2 hr. early. I have been told that we can request early departure tags for our luggage. I had a friend that did this in LA and they had no problem getting off in about 30 mins. If they can't do this then I will just keep my bags with me and leave with the first group. The ship looked like it got in the port early in the morning on the first cruise so I am not worried at this point.

Yes, you can go to Guest Services and show them your bus departure ticket for 9:15 a.m. (Quick Shuttle sends you a confirmation by email which you must bring with you) and Guest Services will then provide you with Chip and Dale luggage tags. Those guests are first off the ship. I was off by 8:20 a.m. Had my luggage and had plenty of time to spare.

Does anyone know what the Castaway members get? I know the Platinum get a scarf...what do the other levels get??

THANKS!!

Platinum members did NOT get a scarf. Only selected guests received the scarf. The normal gifts were given: Passport holders with some note cards and luggage strap. And the normal Castaway Club gift: beach bag, flip flop rice krispy treats (to die for-NOT) and the aluminum drink thingies.

Does anyone have a recommendation for shoes? Is a regular sport type shoe ok or would a hiking type shoe be better?

My tennis shoes were fine the whole cruise.

Now for my excursions:

In Skagway, I did the White Pass Train and Bicycle ride (14 miles-mostly downhill). It was awesome, even though it was snowing and raining at the summit. We actually had to ride our bikes one by one through the U.S. Customs Border Office and show our passport, it was pretty funny. The tour company gave us raingear and gloves and helmets. It was incredibly beautiful scenery. I would do it again.

In Juneau-I did the Zipline and Mendenhall Glacier. It was fantastic. A total of 7 zips and 2 training zips and we were given hot tea halfway through and made s'mores over the firepit after the zipping and watched a slide show of our excursion (which we then purchased since they took awesome pictures). Only had 45 minutes at Mendenhall Glacier. Wish we had more time there. Saw plenty of wildlife on the excursion. There was even a bear sighting at the glacier that day, but I did not see the bear. Great visitors center with telescopes so you can see the glacier if you don't want to walk the 1.3 miles to it.

In Ketchikan-I relaxed and walked into town and did some shopping. Did some lunch with incredible fish and chips next to the Lumberjack show in town. I had some friends who did the Disney exclusive 4:45 p.m. lumberjack show and they thought it was great. You can actually walk from the ship (5 minutes) to the lumberjack place and purchase the tickets right there. I think it was $37 for adults and they just ask you if you are on the Disney Wonder if you want the 4:45 p.m. show.

For Tracy Arm-spent the whole day on deck. BBQ on deck up at adult pool and at deck 9 aft. They have built a cover in the front of deck 10 right behind the front of the ship where those windows are so you can stand in there and it is a little more comfortable. They had coffee, hot chocolate, pastry and cookies all day long. In addition, they brought out a cart from Cove Cafe and wheeled it around deck 10 all day serving speciality coffee drinks and such. The Outlook Bar was packed all day and not real convenient for seeking Tracy Arm in my opinion. I just kept walking around deck 10, because the position of the ship is continually changing back and forth, so great views were from all parts of the ship.

The cruise was incredible. In fact, so incredible my parents have asked me to accompany them and my brother and sister-in-law, so I will be doing the very last cruise of the season also!

Also, saw lots of comments at the beginning of the thread about us being out on the ocean going up. Captain Thord tried everything he possibly could to avoid doing that and even tried all the way up to sailaway, but the pilot would not let him. THe first time a ship arrives for the very first time, they will not allow it to go on the inside passage the first time out. Thus, we went out and then came back on the inside passage. Our timing coming back on the inside passage was timed with the currents and thus our schedule got adjusted accordingly. Captain Thord told me that all cruises after ours would be doing the inside passage both ways.

Remember not to just use your viewfinder to see Alaska through your camera lens. You need to take the time to actually look at all the scenery. The camera doesn't do it justice.

Hope that helps!

Juneau: Whale Watching and Mendenhall Glacier...also loved this. Saw humpbacks up pretty close, sea lions, porpoises and bald eagles. They served drinks and snacks (salmon, crackers, chocolate) and had a restroom onboard. They also had a naturalist onboard to talk about the whales and we learned a lot. The boat is enclosed, but you can go out the back or front when they find the whales. Glacier was gorgeous and you could walk pretty close, nice trails and visitors center but only 1 hour there and it goes by quickly. I would probably not do the whale watching again simply b/c we saw so many from our verandah, though the tour was great. The 9:30 whale watchers didn't see whales and got their money back.

Ketchikan: We then explored the town a bit and went to the DCL Lumberjack Show (I just bought tickets for this on the lumberjack show website...you don't have to book through DCL...it isn't literally "exclusive," though I suspect it will fill up later in the season). This was wonderful! You should definitely do it. Kids loved it. Loved. Lots of participation for the 7+ set.

For the Juneau trip what did you bring beside your camera? Binoculars? Raingear? or was that provided? If you didn't do the whale watch, what else would you have wanted to do in it's place?

For Ketchikan I was not able to get into the lumberjack show to see the other showtimes or ticket costs as it said to purchase through your cruiseline. My main reason for going (am an adult only) would be to see the characters ~ were there any or was it just mainly for kid participation?

thank you

I have been researching this excursion for our Aug. trip. From what I read it is very mild...to some disappointingly so, but not me. There are only a few rapids and I've heard it's fun and just enough for beginners. They do supply rain gear, including boots I believe, and rain jackets. Please post about this trip when you get back...I'm curious to see what you thought of it.

Kelly
I will definitely let you know how this excursion is once we get back. My whole family is pretty excited about it, but I was hoping I'd find a DISer that had done it to fill me in with details beforehand just in case it's something that we shouldn't be taking our daughter on. When I was looking in to excursions, I thought it stated that it was mild. I'm just hoping we don't get soaking wet if it is chilly outside!;)

Just clarifying that your friends bought their tickets that day? Hmmm...I only want to go if there are going to be characters in the show...did they happen to mention if there were?

Thanks for the tips on the Tracy Arm....

I know Weedy scanned and posted Navigators from the 1st cruise in her own post, but they are not 100% complete and not the best scans.

Any chance one of you from the 1st two cruises have scanned all of your Navigators and would be willing to post them in Photobucket and give us a link?

For example, I can't seem to be able to identify any of hers for Tuesday.

Much, much appreciated!

How did everyone go about booking this shuttle? Is there a time that is reccomended not book flights before in order to be "safe"
We have everything booked except for our air into Vancouver from the NY/NJ area and are having significant issues with Continental and trying to find another flight option so Seatlle might be the answer for us. Any help would be greatley appreciated :)

Anyone do the adventure hike to the glacier? We have an 8 year old and was wondering if you thought she could do it? She loves to hike but I don't want her (or Me) to be miserable. Thanks

allears.net has the complete easy to read navigators posted...

i have all the navigators posted on my photo site

www.k-gphotos.phanfare.com

they are pretty clean scans and should be readable

the mendenhall adventure hike is worth it, but you will need good hiking shoes, and it does have a couple of strenous spots, but the views of the glacier are much better than anything from the visitors center, much closer

we did the 4:45 lumberjack show, it's worth it, no disney characters, but the logging skills are pretty neat, it's still a competitive sport in that area. it's an easy walk from the cruise docks, highly recommend the fresh halibut fish and chips from the fish house, it's a little fish place right next door to the lumberjack show.

....on the navigators and on the lumberjack show, hmmm no disney characters...I think I am gonna wait til I get there to decide.

I would have shoes appropriate for what activity level you are doing.

We are doing mostly ride type excursions. Whale watch and glacier, lighthouse totems and eagles, Whitehorse railway. Some walking around town if there is time.

OK, not that I can complain about getting free stuff, but that is disappointing, they sure should have put more time and thought in to these gifts with the amount of $$ we are spending.

The Castaway Club gifts are the same for everyone (in their respective levels) on every cruise.

Some of the inagural and repositioning cruises have stateroom gifts for everyone (each stateroom). On the Alaska one it was DCL napkins and napkin rings and also a signed litho by Don Ducky Williams. Concierge guests have been known to get additional perks/gifts and some VIPs have received gifts also.

Would love to hear from anyone who went on the Musher for a Day excursion (Disney Exclusive) in Juneau?

Selected guests?
Okay what scarf are we talking about?
If it's the blue alaska one- I kept seeing that around and figured people purchased it or something- but when we were on the shuttle at one of the alaska stops I asked a woman about where she got it, assuming it had been sold on the ship and were already sold out and that's why I hadn't seen it or something- she said it was at some D23 convention awhile back that they were given to them at the convention.... so there were a whole lot of people from that convention on the inaugural Alaska cruise apparently LOL

Is that the scarf you're talking about or another one? If it was some other scarf and it really was selected guests- how were they selected? that doesn't seem fair to the rest of the platinum guests.... platinum guests really don't get anything more than Gold guests do? Or is it just the extra for them is the free Palo and choose a treat to be delivered to stateroom?

We were on the inaugural Alaska sailing and did the City Highlights, Totems and Creek Street by Trolley Tour in Ketchikan. We were disappointed with the tour. A brief summary of our tour is as follows: We boarded the trolley from the pier (make sure you get there early to ensure you get a proper forward facing seat and are not on the sideways bench)...we took a quick tour through the downtown area and then spent 30 minutes at the Saxman Native Village...we boarded the trolley again and headed to Creek Street where you have 30 minutes to tour Creek Street and then you can decide to take the trolley back to the ship or walk back on your own. We decided to walk back to the ship on our own and walked through the downtown shopping area.

Please note that since we were on the inaugural sailing, it is possible that the tours may be different based on guests reviews because DCL was interested in hearing our feedback on the excursions (both good & bad).

Whil we did not take the Lighthouses, Totems & Eagles excursion, we did hear from people that took it that they were disappointed, but again based on guest reviews, the excursions could be altered.

Since you have children, I would recommend the Disney Exclusive The Great Alaskan Lumberjack show. We had a blast. They really got the kids involved in the show and seeing the smiles on their faces was priceless. After our show the kids (and the adults) were able to meet the lumberjacks and also get pictures and autographs.

THANKS! What was it that was disappointing? Was it that there was really no guide in Saxman's? or did you overall feel like you could have done most of it on your own?

I'm really stumped on what to do in Ketchikan...nothing seemed all that interesting to me. My DH said he doesn't want to do the Lumberjack show. Maybe I'll have to do some convincing ;)

We did the Mexican Riviera in 2005 (it was the last one before the Magic sailed back). We got a fleece blanket as a CC gift. It's disappointing that they don't have anything different for Alaska.

We are in NJ and we are flying (Continental) into Seattle spending one night there, taking Amtrak (very cheap for 4 people) to Vancouver a couple of days before the cruise and then flying out of Vancouver. This was the cheapest way we found without having to go back to Seattle to fly home.
