My son will be making his first communion this spring and I just realized that most people have some type of party. In an ideal world, would have this at my house. In reality, I live in a tiny house that would maybe hold 10 additional guests, and that would be standing room only! lol Some of the moms rent restaurants and have a very lavish affair. My guest list would maybe be only 20-25 people. I would love to hear from all of you on what you did, or might be planning. I would really love to have a candy station or buffet, but is that wierd for a communion party??

Any ideas or suggestions would be lovely!
Thank, in advance everyone!
:)

I've seen many communions with candy stations.

Also, if you're looking to save money, you could always just reserve a large table in a restaurant, instead of a whole party room. With only about 20 people, that's an option usually.

You could just tell everyone to meet you at a restaurant for lunch (my communion was in the morning so a brunch or lunch would be perfect) and just make a reservation for 20 people. Not a "party" just a regular meal out.

For my communion, a few families got together and rented the church's hall. It was potlock, the mom's cooked/ordered dishes, and while the adults mingled, the kids got to play. Maybe team up with another family?

Depending on where you are in the country and when in the spring it takes place, maybe you can do something outside, like a picnic/open house?

I think a candy buffet sounds fabulous! Doesn't seem weird at all to me.

First Communion in Philly is a huge deal. HUGE! People rent out halls and have them catered and your child gets showered with money. That's just how it always was. We had a house party when I was little and it was definitely one of the cheapest parties. I would think a candy buffet would be fun. The only definites are you need some type of food, I'm sure you could get a sandwich spread from a local deli or supermarket, and then a sheet cake with a cross on it, and then perhaps a DJ or some speakers where you can hook up an ipod.

My DD had her first communion last year. We reserved a room at one of our favorite places. Everyone paid for their own meals and we provided the cake. It was informal, just family and one of her friends.

We just had some family members over for a picnic. My son was glad to come home, change clothes, and play with his cousins. Some families did have more lavish parties, but we had a great time and I think he would have been uncomfortable at a formal party.

our Church had a "punch and cookie" reception after wards in the gym, that we stopped by.. We don't have ANY family where we live and had our closest family members come down so we had cookouts in our backyard for all 3 of my kids....

The candy buffett sounds like a great idea!

My daughter is making her first communion this as well. With Her older brother and sister we just had it at a Chinese Restaurant that we have been going to before they were all born. My and my husband's family love it, because they can order what they want and leave. We also so bring a cake and little thank you presents as well.

We have big s here too. Invite ALL of our families, some friends. We usually have it at our house, with food, tables set up in the garage for about 50 people (including inside kitchen, dining room, deck..) we have had fried chicken, slaw, ...for both, and a big cake. DDs got money, religious gifts (rosaries, mobiles, necklaces, crosses) for gifts, and they usually wear their dress most of the party ...well until #2 DD got black sharpie down the from of hers! The dresses are big and white must cover the shoulders, and have a veil, no open toed shoes and no jewelry or other accessories (purses, gloves...)

For my son's first communion, we teamed up with my cousin, whose son was also receiving his first communion, and we reserved a big table at a favorite pizza joint in town. The only "guests" we had were grandparents and an aunt and uncle. The kids loved being able to play with their cousins and the adults enjoyed being able to visit. We provided a cake, too. It was very informal.

For my daughter's first communion, we took her out to a nice restaurant for dinner. Her grandparents were the only "guests". It was very low key, but very nice and memorable.

Unfortunately, neither of my kids' godparents live in town.

For my DD's First Communion we made a reservation at a restaurant for lunch after it was over. It was really a nice afternoon! I ordered a cake and brought it with me.

I told everyone I would pay for their meal but they were responsible for any liquor they wanted. I have a few heavy drinkers and one would be ordering expensive scotch if we let him as it was he ordered the most expensive item on the menu a filet mignon and proceeded to put ketchup on it

Why not look for a super low cost venue.

Community center, park district meeting room, other church hall/basement, vfw, koc,etc

We had my daughters birthday party at the vfw. The rental fee for the room was $125. We had to pay for a bartender $50. We could bring in any food/ catering at no charge.

It was great.

Great ideas everyone, thanks! :) I really don't want to take everyone to a restaurant, that seems like it would get expensive. I really like the idea of something simple and intimate. I am trying to find a room at a reasonable rate. Our local firehall won't rent unless there is a fireman there for the entire time, I don't know any firemen. I am trying to look around and see what else I can find. I would love to do something outside but living in Buffalo, you never know what the weather will be like! I am still toying with my house, but there just isn't enough seating.
I'm glad that the candy station doesn't seem weird. I think my son would really like something like that. Has anyone ever done a candy station? If you have and have a photo, would you post it so I could see?
I will keep you all posted!
Thanks again
