Questions about resale listings

I see a lot of listings saying X number of points need to be used by 10/08 (or whatever date). Does this mean the travel has to occur by that time or just the reservation?

Also, if that deadline is pretty soon (say June) and it's not likely that we can pull a vacation together in that time, can those points be deposited with II to be used later for a match?

If it says they need to be used by 10/08, that means they are points that will expire at that time, so the stay would have to be before that date. They COULD be banked points, and I am not sure those can be deposited into II. I know you can deposit current use year points into II near the end of the use year, but I'm not sure about banked points.
