Hello fellow disney lovers! Could someone give me a little info please. I am planning our next trip for sept. and when I get to my 7 month window I am hoping to switch up my reservation but will be 2 points short. I don't know anything about renting points and am wondering if there is a minimum number someone can transfur to you and also I've noticed on the rent board it seems like the points are all in large groups....is there any chance i can even find anyone to rent me just 2 points? Thanks for any info!!!!

"renting" and "transferring" are very different activities.

finding a transfer for 2 pts is tough because you only get one transfer per year. you may be fortunate and find someone willing to use up their single transfer for you, but it can be a hassle. (you should probably expect to pay a premium for those pts also, but it might be your best bet since it sounds like you have already borrowed all of your next year's points.)

alternatively, you could also rent the last night of your stay from someone else and bank your leftover pts into the next UY. you will not be able to call MS about that reservation and would be just like any other renter, however. also, it might be tricky (or impossible) to have that reservation linked to yours...requiring you to change rooms for the last night.

As the PP said, two different things.....'renting' means that another member makes the reservation for you with their points. They retain control of the reservation. In that case, renting two points would do you no good, as you can't pay for a single night with some of your points and some of their points.

Transferring would be a somewhat better option, as the points become part of your account. There's no problem with combining points for a single night, as they're all part of the same account.

You may find it difficult to find someone to transfer you two points, though. We're only allowed 1 transfer per year, in or out of our accounts, and people may be reluctant to 'use up' their annual transfer for a twenty-buck transaction.

Assuming you have the points left in your next use year, why not just borrow the 2 points?

Another alternative to renting from a member who'd have to book the last night of your reservation or trying to get those 2 points you'd be short transferred over to you would be to book the night as a cash reservation and bank those points that would then not be used into your upcoming Use Year if you are still within your banking window when you do the switching of reservation at 7 months. MS can link the points reservation nights to the cash night so you'd not need to switch rooms.

I do like what Lynne suggested re borrowing what you need from your upcoming Use Year - this is probably simplest way to accomplish things.

Thanks to everyone for all the info. We go every three years and try to use all our banked, current, and borrowed from next year points as efficiently as possible. So I guess if I can't just get the 2 points transfurred from someoneelse I'll just have to rework my stay a different way! This is only our second trip and after the first i had maybe 4 points left over that just dissappeared at the end of the use year so i guess i will hope someone might be in the same boat and have some extra points they just won't use! thanks again for all your advice!

I have a similar question. I have already borrowed all the points available from my "future" year and I am 5 points shy of what is required to book an extra night.

If I rent these 5 points, how do I make the reservation for that extra night - since the reservation for that night requires 75 points and I would use 70 points from my account and the other 5 from the person I am renting from.
How does this worK ?

Thanks

Joe

You would have to have someone transfer the points to your account and then you make the reservation. If you are reserving at the 11 month window you need someone with the same home resort and UY to transfer the points as they retain their home resort booking status.

Are there any fees involved with point transfurs besides what the seller charges per point?

Technically, according to the Public Offering Statement, there can be no compensation for points transfers.

Three years is tough for this reason - unless you have 1/3 of the points to take the SAME trip every third year (i.e. every three years you take a 285 point trip and own 95 points), you are likely to end up with a few extra or not quite enough points. Since not quite enough is hard to fix, you generally end up with a few extra. (DVC can still be a good deal this way, but it kills you to let a few points slip through your fingers.)

Hiberians - some other options - book one night on cash on the member's discount (if available), spend your first night at another resort (even offsite - some members will fly in late and spend an evening out near the airport, some do Values, some revisit an old favorite for the night).

thanks for the advice guys; I may look into the transfer option.

Thanks to everyone for the info! I think I have lucked out and found someone who can transfur me 6 points. I'll have to eat the remaining 4 but I think cost wise it is worth it to have the extra night at the low added cost. I am curious does the transfur limit of 1 per year go by a calendar year, your use year, or one year from date of transfur. I am wondering if there might be a way for me to then be able to offer my extra 4 points to someone else at a later date.

It is one transfer of point either into your account or out of your account per Use Year (your Use Year). So if you have points transferred into your 2009 Use Year you could not during your 2009 Use Year transfer those points out to another member (or any of your own 2009 UY allotment).

However, you can bank transferred points. So if you are not using all the points that are transferred to you then banking them is a possibility (or bank that amount of your own current UY allotment into your next UY & fully utilize the transferred points for the reservation). Transferred points retain their own Home Resort and Use Year status but MS has been known to allow transferred points to be banked even if they are past their banking deadline.

Good luck :goodvibes
