They are part of southwest but still operating as own airline at this time. PLanes are nice, Free Wifi on all flights. Charge for checked bags. They are famous for changing flight times. Limited flights from some airports, I'd say limited nonstop flights. You can pay in advance for assigned seat but pray you actually get to keep it. If you choose to take a chance you can select a seat at 24 hrs check in free, you can pay for checked bags at this time also. Can anyone tell me about AIRTRAN? What are they like? We are looking at them for our trip in AUg.

maybe I am wrong but I thought I read about wifi being free, I've never flown AT just booked for friend.I looked on Air Tran's website and it says that you have t purchase wifi through Gogo. I am flying Air Tran in two weeks. If you got free wifi, I would be curious to know how you were able to do that,.
Now you can stay connected to the web, email, online shopping and social networking on every AirTran Airways flight through our partnership with Gogo®.
How can I use inflight internet?
Registering for Gogo is fast and easy. Once you create an account you can easily purchase a session on your next Gogo-equipped flight.
I love Air Tran, and am sad to see them go. We flew them just last month, and had no issues at all. In fact, they made announcements both ways about boarding and leaving early. As both flights were full they were also offering to check your carry-on bag for free. So it is a good idea to take an extra yellow Magical Express tag with you, if you may want to take them up on it.
Where are they "going"?? I was thinking of having my son fly them in October.
So what are the rules with bags and carryons? Doesn't each person get a personal item AND a carryon? What would be a personal item? Like a purse/back/pack?
I am traveling with my two young kids and trying to figure out if we can get away with only checking one bag. I thought a backpack for each of them plus a carryon but maybe I am wrong. Thanks in advance.
This is my first time flying in a while and my first time with Airtran.

I was nervous flying them at first too. The only downside were their seats were less comfortable and felt more crowded than SW or JB.
The rule we have been told was: one carryon for the overhead bin and one personal item that fits under the seat in front of them.
When we flew a few months ago with them we had two carry on suitcases and each of us (4) had either a backpack or camera case.
To the OP: we have flown AT several times and never had a problem. Flight time changes, if the happened at all, were minimial, 10 minutes maybe? I always pay for seats wo we can sit together and never had any problems.

That's odd, because AirTran's seats are a full inch wider than WN's (18 inches on AirTran vs. 17 inches on WN)! However, the seat pitch on WN is 32-33 inches vs. 30-31 inches, so they have a tiny bit more leg room.
