hi guys new to the dvc this is our first year of using our dvc and have a question
our use year is september and we are vacationing this year in september so we have points from our first year which was 2010 as we are going in september i was wondering if we can borrow points from our next year being 2012 which would mean we have 480 points which would mean we could get a better room as we will not be going in 2012 hope this makes sense thanks for any help

Yes you can. I copied some rules for you from the DVC site.

What is borrowing Vacation Points?Just like banking, the ability to borrow Vacation Points is a feature of Disney Vacation Club Membership that affords you a great deal of flexibility. To illustrate, let's say you've created a vacation plan for your family, but it requires nearly twice the number of your allotted annual Vacation Points. You can still take your magical getaway because as a Member you have the freedom to borrow Vacation Points from your next Use Year.

Back to Top What do I need to know about borrowing Vacation Points?
•You may borrow Vacation Points only when confirming a reservation and can only borrow the number of Vacation Points needed to make that reservation.
•If you have not completed travel on borrowed Vacation Points by the end of the Use Year they've been borrowed into, they will expire.
•You cannot return borrowed Vacation Points to their original Use Year.
•You cannot bank or transfer borrowed Vacation Points.
•You may apply borrowed Vacation Points to all Member Getaways reservations.
•All borrowing transactions are final.
•In order to borrow Vacation Points, you must be current on your Annual Dues and monthly loan payments (if applicable), and cannot have any other overdue balances related to your Membership.
•Borrowing may be suspended or limited from time to time in order to maintain a proper balance of Vacation Points in the Central Reservation System.

Back to Top Can you give me an example of borrowing Vacation Points?Let's say you're planning a week-long family vacation through Member Getaways which requires 270 Vacation Points; however, your annual allotment is only 200 Vacation Points. At the time of confirming your reservation, you may borrow 70 Vacation Points from your next Use Year. However, if for some reason your plans change, your 70 borrowed Vacation Points will expire if not used by the end of the current Use Year.

Back to Top How do I borrow Vacation Points? You can only borrow Vacation Points at the time of confirming a reservation. If you are ready to make a reservation that requires borrowing Vacation Points from your next Use Year, contact Member Services at (800) ******** or (407) 566-3800†.

u can borrow your next year point for trips after your use year so you should be able to access the 2012 points

our use year is september and we are vacationing this year in september...

the first thing to ask is: "what use year am i travelling in?"

sept 2011 is in your 2011 UY, naturally enough...so you can book a stay with current 2011 pts, banked 2010 pts and/or borrowed 2012 pts. you could have called as early as oct 2010 to book a reservation at your home resort with any combination of those pts.

so we have points from our first year which was 2010...

your banking window for those pts closes on april 30, 2011. you can choose to bank them when you call to make your reservation for sept 2011. (but they are not banked into 2011 automatically - so don't forget.)

here's a good thread for learning about how "use year" works:

Remember, that if you aren't going to use your 2010 UY points, you must bank them into your 2011 UY by the end of April, 2011.

I have a question. I didn't get my 2010 points banked. Has anyone ever tried to trade for a later use year? I have 170 points that expire in May 2010. Vacation is to be scheduled in October. If I could trade my points for say 150 2011 use year points. What do you think?

I am not understanding what you are asking. If you have a June UY, and missed the deadline (end of Jan.), then call MS and ask them to make an exception. They have been known to give everyone a one time "oops!".

But, there is no way to morph your 2010 UY points into 2011 UY points, other than banking.

it is theoretically possible to transfer 170 2010 UY pts to another member who might be willing to trade for fewer of their 2011 UY pts to transfer to you.

but due to the challenges of finding a match and the difficulties of using pts on relatively short notice, i'd agree with sandy:

1) call MS and grovel and ask for a one-time banking exception (and put your banking window on your calendar/phone/PDA going forward.)

or else

2) rent your 2010 pts for whatever you can get and chalk it up to a learning experience.
