Question regarding DP Calculator

Originally I was thinking of NOT doing the dining plan, but wanted to try the calculator to see the cost.

Edited to add: If I ended up with Free Dining it sounds like this would actually be worth it, right?

Can someone explain how this works out? Where does the $485.12 come from if the cost is $696.92? Forgive me for the stupid questions.

This dining plan would cost $485.12 and covers the following amounts:

• Appetizers: $0.00
• Desserts: $45.92
• Snacks: $31.44
• Refillable Mugs: $17.99
• Taxes: $15.59

You would need to pay for these amounts out of pocket:

• Entrees & Drinks: $116.72
• Appetizers: $0.00
• Desserts: $22.00

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe the $485.12 is the cost of the dining plan for the period you are going. Based on what you input for your restaurants the total comes to $416.18. This means that you pay more for the dining plan than what you will use. The Dining plan covers $68.50 more than what you will actually use. The $696.92 is the total of your dining plan meals, plus the ones you need to pay out of pocket. Of course this is just an estimate as the prices of the items on the menu do very and you could use more or less of that left over $68 depending on what meals are ordered.

I agree, it looks like whatever you said you'do be eating, the cost would be $485.12 cost of the dining plan on your reservation plus additional meals, tips, appetizers out of pocket making your grand total on food to be $696.92. This would be $68.50 more than what you'd pay buying the exact same things paying entirely out of pocket with no plan at all ($628.42)
